Highway Robbery!!! – Never again! My husband and I were walking around the West Village during a gorgeous summer afternoon. We saw the charming outdoor tables, and asked whether we could just order a bottle of wine and sit and enjoy. The waiter asked what kind of wine we wanted, so we asked for a wine list, to which he replied, " Red? White?" I said we would be interested in either a white or rose. Again, instead of getting a wine list, he went on describing what types of whites. We asked what type of rose, and he said "French". I asked how much the bottle was, and he then replied, "$35 or $40?" He wasn't sure. Upon bringing the bottle and serving us, he then said he had to bring it inside, as they didn't have ice buckets. Fair enough, except when we were near finishing the bottle, my husband asked if they would just leave the bottle on the table. One waiter did, but the first waiter came back and took the bottle off our table, and said it was against "management policy" to leave the bottle out. My husband was fuming. When this waiter came back out, he tried to explain himself, and I said, what difference did it make, since we're almost done with the bottle, and if we let it get warm, it was our business, not "management's". He proceeded to bring it back out, and we asked for the bill. The other waiter came out and told is it was $50.60. I said how much was the bottle? He said it was $46 + tax. How did we go from $35~ $40 not too sure, to $46? Then to top it all off, it was cash or American Express only. Thankfully we had enough cash, but I asked for the receipt. The rude waiter came back out after ringing it up, and flicked it onto our table, and of course it fell on the ground. Of course we will never go back, but "management" had better pay better attention to the very rude service, and what seems to us, as a scam by not letting the customer see prices before they order. Beware!
Absolutely wonderful – This is my absolute favorite West Village restaurant. Sitting outside on a warm night, drinking a French Gimlet or one of the very good wines by the glass, with a light late supper of calamari (omigod the ethereal perfectly cooked, delightful lush, generously portioned calamari!) and salad - perfection.
Everyone I have brought here has come back - frequently. We all agree that Alexandra is a place to call culinary home. Every dish I have savored has been absolutely wonderful, from the perfectly dressed salads to the luscious desserts.
And the staff is as cool as downtown can be while being friendly and more than willing to serve!
I just wish they had the corn soup every night! (Fortunately they seem to always have the ribs, calamari and mussels!)
horrible – this place use to be decent but recently the head waiter and owner who lives up stairs as become so rude. They are anti american. I went with family for mopthers day...wow we were so disappointed it was so expensive and we were treated like garbage and the food was midocre at best....don't bother
Terrible food – Had brunch here today and was extremely disappointed by the food. Huevos Rancheros had no flavor and the world's worst guacamole. Chicken sandwich took 50 minutes to arrive and was still slightly raw inside when it finally arrived.
There are several decent reviews on here, so I can only imagine it's recently changed management or chefs. That's the only thing that an explain the cockroaches that scampered as I walked to the bathroom.
great lunch – I was walking past this restaurant at lunchtime ,hungry and cold and stopped in for a casual lunch. Being by myself, I sat at the bar and asked the server what she recommended. She broughtt me a delicious creamy roasted vegetables soup and a grilled calamari appetizer that was incredible. I had a wonderful desert also recommended. This is a small special West Village vibe place. As I ate at the bar local merchants were popping in to say hello to the woman behind the bar who I learned was the owner. No wonder her recommendations were spot on. I'll be back to try dinner.
NOT Good!! – We have all heard of the restaurant Alexandra. People rave and brag about the food. Let me tell you, the food was not up to my expectations for this restaurant. I ordered a steak entree, and did not feel well the next day. I asked for the steak medium rare, but was served with it simply red. I decided to eat it nonetheless.
The service was however really good. However, the main thing that should be concentrated on here is the FOOD!
Tasty Food – What really makes this restaurant is the atmosphere, decor and the amazing service. It truly is a very classy restaurant and very inviting. The food is pretty good, too.Their oyster could use a little improvement but the salmon I had there was excellent and it was on top of the corn and tomato concoction that would make anyone's mouth melt. The touchino was quite good. I'd say the low point of my visit there was the calamari.
All in all a great place if you want to hang out with a couple of friends or go on a fun date.
THE WORST – by far the worst service in the village! waitress doesnt care if you caught on fire she would ignore you... after waiting 40 minutes for my dinner she tried to take away my plate with half of the meal still on it, mentioning that she needed the table. THERE WAS NO ONE WAITING. won't ever go back. the food was ok, too expensive.
At first glance appealing, but below the surface a very cold establishment. – Expected a charming brunch but one of the waiters was beyond rude and unaccommodating. We honestly did not feel welcome. While we thought we had found another charming Village brunch hangout spot, in the end we decided we will never patronize this establishment again. Quite a shame.
great local bistro – I've been here a few times and the food has always been great - the salmon is a favorite, and so are the scallops. The service can be uneven, since it seems they hire inexperienced waiters and train them on the job. Overall, it's a wonderful and cozy destination.
