Sip Starry Night cocktails and dine on delicate sushi arrangements as pretty as the patrons in this sleek, loft-like downtown sushi hotspot suspended over an American Apparel store. If you're watching your dining dollars, go for the daily happy hour, and park in the Indigo building garage at 12th & Washington--Masu will validate.
We called ahead of time and reserved a table for 2. I had my brother in town and wanted to take him somewhere special. He had just landed and been on a long flight from over seas. SO being exhausted and thinking this would be the perfect place. In all our years of dining this was a NIGHTMARE! We arrived at the restaurant literally 10 late. The hostess told me that she didn't see our reservation. When I explained the exact time, she snidely remarked that we were late, and doubted that we'd be able to get a table. Both my brother and I would have left under normal circumstances, but considering he hadn't slept in almost 24 hours nor eaten, we just stood there dumbfounded and continued the abuse (from the hostess). We asked why we would not be seated and she said, "Well, I guess I can seat you, but there is a "time" limit on your table since your late." I think we were in such shock over her curt, blunt and outlandish rude behaviour , that we just asked to have a seat and eat. The hostess seemed to be on a mission to destroy our Saturday evening. My brother asked the hostess if she hated her job so much, why was she there. She quickly snapped back and said, "I am the OWNER." I guess if this is how the owner behaves, we have no reason to think this place ever stands a chance. For a bill over $125 for 2 people, slow service, sub par food and a vicious, nasty, self righteous hostess owner, we'll never return. I am shocked this place is still in business. If you value a true atmosphere with warm and enjoyment, great food and fair prices, this place isn't for you! However, if you're okay with arrogance, slow service and an owner who treats the customers like garbage, than give it a try! We'd rate it 0 stars if that were an option.

Portland Sushi at Masu – I had the pleasure of dining at Masu in Portland while on a business trip. The food and service was absoutely outstanding! I will be dreaming of the "Death by Sushi Roll" when I get back home to the East Coast. Thank you to Rory for being an awesome server - and if you ever see this, you were totally dreamy!
For those who care, it was a bit pricey, but was worth every penny!
Disappointed – I used to love this place and after over a year hiatus, stopped by for dinner last night. Everything was great except the Spanish mackerel that I ordered as an appetizer. Things happen; I know that, meaning that when the appetizer arrived after the dinner was served, I was ok with that. But when the owner Maria, tries to lie about why it took so long, that isn’t ok. Having ordered this appetizer many times before, the restaurant clearly messed up, but Maria took the easy way out and lied about a server error. This is not ok. Makes me wonder about the restaurant integrity and I won’t be back!
Sushi in Portland – I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in Portland and now I only go to Masu.
I have tried most of the dishes and found the quality to be extrememly high, and always consistent.
The service and ownership are outstanding and I give this my highest recomendation.
Try the Watari Bune Junmai Daiginjo sake for a special treat. Worthe every penny and the best sake I have ever tasted.
disorganized – nothing was platted correctly. one salad came, then an entre. we had ordered an appetizer that finally came at the end of the meal and the 2nd persons salad came with a third entre. Server never asked if we wanted a 2nd cocktail. recommend you dont put an appetizer on the menu that takes a long time to prepare.
Nice decor, average sushi – While in Portland for the weekend, we decided to check out Masu based on reviews at citysearch. The prices were about average for this type of sushi place, the sushi itself was average at best. The service was fine; I don't think we had the same person at our table more than once, not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing but they were all friendly (one woman even went to her co-workers to come up with some recommendations for some good places for us to check out after). I loved the decor, especially the wall behind the sushi bar. Nice music, too, and I have to give them props for playing Hot Chip!
so tasty and so yummy – Masu is a great place for some very amazing sushi! I was at the sushi bar with my brother and we both decided before hand that we didn't want to spend to much money and to try and keep it cheap, knowing sushi is always expensive, and masu isn't exactly a family style old school japanese 50% off kinda place. It's hip and funky with alot of style right downtown, it's more along the lines of a place to be seen. So we started getting our order and as soon as we started eating we looked at each other and we just started laughing, because it was soooo.. Goood! We started with Hirame our favorite! My brother and I usually get sushi together because we can afford more and sample more. the Hirame was amazing I have to say. We even asked the sushi chef about it and he said that they special order it from japan every week for the weekend. we ate our dinner and everything was so good, we both couldn't remember the last time we had so much delicious sushi, every piece of nigiri was so fresh. My bro and i usually eat on the east side of town, but we decided to try and get back to masu ASAP!. Our plan to eat cheap didn't quite happen, only because we had to order more since it was so good. oops! Try the Aji and if you are downtown portland definitly try out masu sushi it's a winner!! definitly be going back..
I came in with a group of friends and sat in their lounge area, I have to say that the atmosphere at Masu is nice. The server was nice and kept checking in on us to make sure, if we needed anything - though..I
feel like I need to apologize for my friend's behavior.. she was a bit out of line.
(it was kinda embarrassing...) There was a bit of confusion regarding our bill, and I feel, that she tried her best to get it right. Either way, things got a bit ugly - and.. it all came down to a drop in communication.
But, yeah, Masu itself, is yummy. The food came out quick, and the drinks were AMAZING!
I'll probably be back.. just with different friends.
great place!! – excellent fish wish i could afford sushi more often! this is the place to get it . its even open late with great music and cheap eats happy hour!
