What to do with gift certificates from the Canoe? – I have a gift certificate for the closed Canoe Restaurant in Orland Park Ill....is there any way to get it redeemed?
No wonder it closed – Management and owners were way over their heads with this place from the get go. They were a million over budget. Original investors bailed. Management and primary owner couldn't pay the vendors their bills (when you can't pay for food, architects, supplies, you got a problem). They didn't care or listen to anyone and they started to get sued--big time. The place is in default and a company owns the land and that's it. The place has so many liens on it that no one wants it.
abandoned fish in giant tanks – This place closed and walked away from the obligation of feeding and caring for the live sharks and reef fish that inhabited the large tanks in the restaurant. They were dead and some were suffering as of last week. Some one should help!!!
THE CANOE CLUB – This restaurant abrubtly closed its doors recently, giving no notice to customers. It is obvious that they knew they would be closing. Having visited the Canoe Club previously, we purchased gift cards to present to our father for his 81st birthday on October 8, 2007. The employee who sold us the cards on October 6, 2007, said nothing about going out of business. The local Chamber of Commerce has no further information. The sign on the door says they are closed "temporarily", but, provides no further information. Even if they reopen, I would not patronize a restaurant that would deceive its customers. Nor do I believe that they will reopen and/jor accept previously purchased cards. Now we may very well be stuck with recently purchased, unused gift cards. For a restaurant that began with a decent reputation, they turned out to be deceptive and disappointing!
What happened to this wonderful place! – Did the original owners bail out on this Southside gem? We went to dinner on Sat. 9/29/07. We were seated promptly, which is really unusual as this place used to be packed all the time. We should have taken that as a prelude to what was to come. No sharks in the "shark tank." We were told they outgrew the tank, no mention if they had purchased new sharks. Large tropical fish in their place. The waitstaff used to be very knowledgeable about wine, we had a high school aged girl as our server who didn't know much about wine of course. All the bar staff's wine recommendations were the most expensively priced wines, and as everyone knows, it doesn't have to be expensive to be good. Our bread came and it was stale and overtoasted. Their pinapple bread used to be fresh and very moist. This was as dry as biscotti. When it came time to order, they were out of everything, filets, lobster, tilapia. How could a restaurant be out of everything at 8:00 at night. It was homecoming that evening, and that could have explained all the mishaps, but we could still tell that things were different. Anyway, our dinner arrived cold and undercooked. How can you undercook fish? We asked to speak to a manager, and it took about 15 minutes for the manager to come over, 15 minutes for a manager to come talk to complaining customers in an empty restaurant is unheard of. She took one entree off our bill. We then retreated into the bar, which used to have live entertainment, but did not. The manager was there and told the bartender to give us anything we wanted. Her martini came with no olives in it, and when she asked for some, the bartender said he forgot. How can you forget olives in a martini? My Bailey's and coffee was ice cold and the coffee tasted like it sat there all day. Plus the "chefs" were in the bar drinking beer, very unprofessional. This used to be our favorite spot, don't know what happened to this place, but will not be returning.
horrible horrible horrible!!! – Took a party of 9 for sunday brunch. It was suppose to be a celebration for my mother and mother in law's birthday. I had made reservations a month in advance, and to my suprise they seated the 9 of us in a corner booth in the bar. They wanted 9 of us to slide in and out for a buffet style brunch. We were under the impression that we would celebrate in their grand dining area, but they failed to mention when I booked ther was a wedding shower that day. The food was ok, however they ran out of everything. The waiter had to make special trips to the kitchen to get what was suppose to be on the buffet table. They ran out of the big jumbo shrimp, so they decided to throw some smaller shelled in their place. People were standing waiting for plates, spoons, and we had to ask 3 times for orange jucie beofre going to the bartender and getting it from her. My father was so disgusted he grabbed a dessert plate because he was tired of waiting. The topper was when the waiter decided to up his mandatory tip 2%. After trying to get some resolution with their management team through numerous phone calls, they have managed to avoid my calls through a number of excuses. $22.00 per person--TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!!! My recommendation is to avoid this restaurant, you will at least get what you pay for at Denny's.
Fun, fantastic food, great service – I'm sorry for the other person's experience however I just recently (last weekend) had a big gathering at the Canoe Club and everyone is still raving about our experience. We were told about their reservation policy and I can understand why they would need one, the place was packed! Once all our guests arrived we were seated and the night went on perfectly. The atmosphere goes without saying; as for the food and the service, everything was excellent! I will definitely be back.
Everything Went WRONG! – We had my mom's surprise 60th birthday party here and it was a huge mistake!!!
Everything went wrong. The event coordinator communicated the wrong time to the hostess, so they seated other people where they should have reserved tables for our party. My guests were standing around a crowded bar for over a half an hour waiting. Once the tables cleared we frantically had to put up our decorations while my mom was stalled. They also promised us leis for the group which were never brought out.
They then assigned two waitresses to our group who both had several other tables - they tried their best to get to us, but we waited constantly for food and drinks. It took an hour to get any food out which was all pre-ordered family style and mediocre at best. The calamari was undercooked, the salad was dry and tasteless, the tilapia was soggy, and the flat bread was too saturated with cheese. To top it off, there wasn't nearly enough for the group. I had to order more at every course because some guests were left with nothing after the food passed.
The bus boys would walk by and not pick up anything. I had to clear my own tables and make them take the dirty dishes. When we wanted to get the cake cut the waitress did it herself right at the table instead of bringing it to the kitchen. We then took over for her because she was too busy. No coffee was offered at dessert and when we did ask it didn't arrive till well after everyone was done.
It was just a disaster all around. I have never had to work so hard to be served dinner. The event coordinator never apologized and disappeared as soon as it started. When we got the bill, they charged us $40 for my 5yr old nephew's chicken fingers. The only thing that went right was that they agreed we shouldn't pay full price. However, you only get one 60th birthday, and I would have much rather paid and had a nice time then get the discount.
Bottom Line: I would NEVER go here again.
Outstanding Experience-Delicious Food – Canoe Club was such a wonderful experience! From the moment we walked through the door, we were welcomed by a warm and smiling host staff. We checked in with the hostess, and went to the lounge where we were greeted by a dashing young bartender! We tried two of the tropical drinks: Big Ed's Mai Tai and a Bakini Tini. They were awesome! My husband loved the rum float on the mai tai, and I really enjoyed the pineapple infusion in the Bakini Tini. We were seated not long after that in a spectacular dining room with huge palm trees and a towering waterfall. I felt like I was in a secret oasis where I had escaped all of my responsibilities. Our sever, Maria, was outstanding! She gave us several recommendations which included the delectable ahi tuna nachos, and fresh tomato and mozzarella flatbread, fantastic lobster bisque and Island seafood chowder, a crisp blue cheese ceasar dinner salad, and for our entrees I got the Seafood trio which was a macadamia nut crusted mahi-mahi, blackened marlin, and bbq glazed salmon. It was the perfect portion and absolutely delicious! My husband had the Ribeye, and said it one of the best ribeye's he had ever had (and actually cooked medium like he had asked!) For dessert, the server brought out a canoe of mini-desserts. We indulged in a light double chocolate mousse and a rich coconut cream pie! It was the perfect ending to a perfect experience! I felt like I had been whisked away to a tropical island and treated like a queen! I loved it and would recommend the Canoe CLub to everyone...the menu has so many different entrees, everyone will find a great entree they will love! (oh, and the restrooms were beautiful!!)
Outstanding Tropical Drinks and Martinis!! – Canoe Club is an excellent place to relax after a stressful day and unwind with one or more of their outstanding cocktails. The staff is friendly and accommodating, answering every annoying question I had about their Cocktails. I Highly Recommend this Bar for any day of the week!
