real smoky barbecue and bourbon lovers paradise – OK..let's lay it down. The plates are styrofoam, the tablewear is plastic, the bread is white, but the BARBECUE is SMOKY and the list of BOURBONS is UNBELIEVABLE. It took me three times longer to figure out which bourbon to start off with, as it did to decide what to have for lunch. I went with my family and went with the 4 meat combo. The brisket was still in the smoker and was eliminated from the taste test. The quarter chicken and ribs (dry rubbed and smoky) were fall off the bone good. The wings were a bit dry, but that was easily countered with any of the top notch bourbons offered. The mac n' cheese was bland, but the beans were sweet and smoky. As far as sauces go, i believe they mask the true value of legitimate barbecue. If the meat has enough gumption, it should stand alone. Sauce should be treated as an accompaniment or accessory.
Let's face it...Tony Romas was a place for ribs, but it was not real barbecue. It was most likely boiled first, then lightly smoked, and then covered in commercial sauce considered palatable by only uninitiated bbq afficionadoes.
IN CLOSING.. this place ranks low on ambience, and is not kid friendly. Hardly a date place (unless the little lady happens to be a bourbon loving smoke eater)...BUT if you like you meats smoky and your bourbon choices plentiful, this place deserves a nod (with a wink, wink to the bourbon appreciators out there). Save yourself the time and humiliation of trekking to touristy Virgil's for "real Barbecue". If you are in Brooklyn this place is a no-brainer. If you are a city chowhound, don't expect the red carpet treatment...Just a nice smoky feeling in the back of your throat.
2ND VISIT. the pulled pork and brisket were unbelievable, as were the old charter and pappy van winkle bourbons. if you don't love this place,..either you dont know barbecue or you're a commie.
How you feelin'? – Hot! Hot! Hot! I went to their hot sauce party last night and tried about 10 home brewed hot sauces made from fresh peppers. Every one was delicious. So much better than bottled stuff with chemicals and prerservatives. Some of the regulars even joined in the fun and made up some of their own. One made by a fellow from Trinidad was fire in a bottle. If you like it hot and spicy, this place is Brooklyn's best hidden 'hot' spot. Oh, and the ribs weren't bad either.
Kinda Divey Kinda Nice – I love it. Great pulled pork with plenty of smoke and proper NC vinegar/pepper sauce. I've never had anything dried out or tasteless and I eat there maybe once a week. Now, they're making their own hot sauces and they're a great addition to the barbeque. I like the slaw on the side. They also have a huge bourbon and beer selection. Try the wings with the hotter sauce!
terrible – there were no redeming qualities about this meal. i hate my friend for taking me here. i have never written a review about any restaurant but i feel it necessary for this place because no establishment should get away with serving this kind of food to customers. I'm a cook, and would be embarassed to serve this slop to any customer. i ordered the 2 meat combo -ribs and chicken...the thigh and leg (which is almost impossible to dry out but they managed to). for sides i had the greens and the potato salad. Both the ribs and the chicken were completely dried out and tasteless, bland , no seasoning, hardly any meat on the ribs. the two sauces they had on the table tasted horrible. one of them looked like apple cider vinegar with some crushed red pepper and the other tasted like hot sauce with generic lemon juice. i'm not a big fan of drowning my bbq in sauce because i usually like to taste the natural smoky flavor of the meat but i was forced to with this meat. as i was eating the meal i got the feeling that these people really just don't care. the potato salad was watery mush. it seemed like they overcooked the potatoes, drained them improperly and then threw in some salt and pepper an that was it. the mediocre greens were probably the best part of the meal. no, no... wait...the best part of the meal was the 2 slices of wonder bread that accompanied the 2 pieces of shoe leather. ...yeah. i just felt bad for the server who had to serve this slop to us. i tried a bit of my friends brisket. it tasted like it had been boiled.....that's it. it was just a bunch of of chunks of meat. none of the meat tasted like it had been smoked (which is what bbq is supposed to be). definitely not recommended.
Nice Place! – From the outside this place looks like its rundown and small but in the inside it has hard-wood floors a large bar area and small tables. I didn't find the food to be "to die for." It was ok...I wished it would've had more seasonings or at least better appealing. We ate in fast food restaurant containers and plastic utensils. Not appealing.

Lots of smoke, lots of whiskey, lots of hot sauce – Ok so this place is owner operated and it shows. Care is put into every detail. Bar BQ is a must for any BBQ fan. The brisket is outstanding and the pulled pork is biblically good. Plus they have a over 30 types of whiskey and hot sauces to choose from.
I very quickly became a fan after the great service and outstanding food. Try them out.
Best BBQ in NY – I've been a fan of Bar BQ since the days its owner was selling sandwiches at street fairs and I followed him to his restaurant. The pulled pork sandwich is the best ever... so tender, so rich, so moist... and the sauce! My favorite is the NC style vinegar based sauce, but they're all good. And the brisket is great too, but my heart follows the oink. The place couldn't be friendlier and its where I take all my out-of-town Southern friends when they want a taste of home. They've never been disappointed. Highly recommended for the BBQ expert and novice alike. Good eats, friendly service, family friendly and great for a group, too.
Family Fun Barbeque – My son and I are new to this neighborhood and are so happy to have found BAR BQ! It's a great combo of family restaurant and bar. I had some drinks and a great pulled pork sandwich with incredible sauces and my son had chicken and chocolate cake. Prices are fair and the staff was friendly.
The Best BBQ I've Ever Eaten! – I had the opportunity to sample the best pulled pork BBQ ever. Great smoked flavor, tender, and seasoned just right. The home made BBQ sauce is to die for. Keep up the great work, Frank!!!!!
