Palatial Regalia!! Rowdy! – Awesome scene. Good music, good dancing, good cultural mix, good vibes. The most fun..plus the HOTTEST bartender I have ever seenin Houston works there! Schwing!!
i haven't been in a looong time maybe since last year to see the spazmatics. it was really fun and had a really good crowd. the band got the whole place singing and having a good ole time... we had soo much fun that we wanted to do it again like a week or two later. unfortunately we didn't get in because the line was rediculously loooong... think we got in line like sometime after 11 but before midnight and the line barely moved... we ended up giving up and left the line... the location is also not that safe.... it's next to bus station and parking kinda sucked... so overall only been there once but it was fun... attempted to go a 2nd and 3rd time but line was tooo long and did not move if you arrive there after 11..
Spazmatics!!!! – I went on a thursday night for the first time.. the crowd is exzctly as explained, very diverse and energetic. I had so much fun watching them preform.
Good atmosphere and good prices on drinks. I would recommend Sammy's to anyone
WOW!! SO MUCH FUN!! – I went to Sammy's for the first time last weekend. I had so much fun. The band was great, but beware the music is so loud! The drinks were good and strong but not overpowering and the bar staff was really fast to get the drinks out even though it was packed elbow to elbow. There wasn't really any place to sit since all the tables were reserved which was uncomfortable at first but once the crowd gets there who wants to sit anyway? Me and my girls danced all night long!!!
Entertaining – First time visit to this bar. They've really made most of the small, one floor space. Came to see Rockstar Fantasy Karaoke with Time Machine. They're probably the best coverband I've ever seen. You could sign up and sing songs with them from a list of of over 300. They got the crowd going early and into the midnite hour.
I wouldn't call this pace a "dive bar", but prices for drinks were above average at other bars I've been to in better condition. $5 for small mixed drinks I could understand but $4 for bottled beer? Sammy's is not far from the University of Houston campus. I expected college friendlier prices.
Pros: Great entertainment, smoking is outside, great looking bartenders!
Cons: A tad pricy, parking is almost exclusivley valet.
Recomended for all ages.
entertainment for sure – I was dead tired/sick the night I went to Sammy's and somehow this place was still entertaining enough to keep me there for a few hours. I went on a Sat and they had some soul jazz band singing anything from 60-90s.......and I mean anything, Princess by Spin Doctors? But this band was very crowd interactive and everyone was having a blast. It's kind of a very small place, so you do have to bump some elbows to get around. But I found the bar accessible and the crowd live. The ages were mainly 20-30s with a good chunk of 40-50s in there. I got a Red Bul and very good mixed drink for 10$, so the prices seemed reasonable. I did have to circle the block 3 times to keep from blocking the road while trying to get valet parking. Only 3-4 mens facilities, so it had a couple of us waiting, but not long. It looked like you could smoke in some far back room, but I didn't journey there. Very nice atmosphere for a live band establishment. In between performances and breaks, the club music booty grindtastic with..........a badd azz speaker system that will have you coughing. The cover was 10$ a piece, which really did seem outrageous looking at the place, but entertainment wise worth it.
Plays its position well – I was coaxed into going to Sammy's on a Thursday by some of my colleagues. They were more than excited to go see the band that plays on Thursday and I thought, maybe I will go check it out. I must say that it exceeded my expectations but that was not impressive because my expectations were very low. The entry was effortless. Once inside, the decor did not jump out but was average. The place was packed and loud (reminded me of a college party) but was relatively easy to maneuver. Drinks were decent. The band was decent and even got me with a few of their 80's renditions (the 80's are essentially a transition from the 70's to the 90's, like a middle child of sorts). What keeps this place going is really the willingness of the crowd to let loose. People were dancing without regard to how silly they may look which is awesome and encouraging. Go out and let your hair down, we all go out to have a good time . . . act like it. I honestly don't remember the last time that many people bought me shots. Place probably deserves 4 stars but although I am a fan of the 80's, I can't listen to 80's music all night long. If that is your interest, this place is great but it left me wanting a little more.
Most fun i've ever had in a bar! – I've been here about a half a dozen times. Usually it's been to see Sammy who is always entertaining. I think he becomes a bigger legend in his own mind each time I see him but it's hilarious, I love it and it's fun! A couple weeks ago we caught a band called Skyrocket. Apparently voted Austin's best cover band. One of the guys is able to pull off a dead-on cover of the Stones and Zeppelin. Actually everything this guy did was pretty damn good and he was totally in character with whoever he was covering. The female lead does some great covers as well. They are playing there pretty regularly throughout the year and my friends and I will be back.
SPAZMATICS PUT THIS PLACE ON THE MAP!!! – We went on a Thursday and I wasn't too thrilled to go in the first place (I had never been to Sammy's before). Got there and the Spazmatics were playing.... let me tell you, the mood changed quickly. I will go back again, and again, and again. Probably only on Thursdays..... just to see the Spaz's!!! If you have never seen them.... I HIGHLY suggest you do. But only if you LOVE 80's music.... otherwise you will be disappointed. I am a married 30-something and I saw people of ALL ages there and enjoyed everyone! I hear these guys also play at Scout Bar occasionally. That's my 2 cents!
working conditions – I tend to disagree with a review about sammy's being a bad place to work!! I have been working here for almost three years and have never worked for a better company! Ussually if someone asks if we're hiring I tell them that we are not because our employees don't budge. That must say something about the company. I have worked in bars for the past 8 years and never been so accomodated! The management is so understanding when you are sick or if you just need a night off for a social life. This comes from someone who does work here so consider the source when reading negative reveiws. Anyone who comes to this bar can see the chemistry between employees. The atmosphere is all around great. Our motto is to have a good time cause it's contagious
