Best Server in Chicago- Danny Levin – I love Rosebud, but Alex Dana got lucky when he hired Danny Levin as a server. Danny is a true professional that makes your stay at Trattoria one to remember every time you dine at Rosebud. He knows the menu and knows what I and my family like to eat. One of the better Italian American diners in River North. I really enjoy the grilled Tuna.
Now we know why there wasn't a wait – We ordered the clam chowder soup, twin filets, and the pasta special. The good part of the meal was the twin filets, and the rest was really unmentionable. Service started out nice; we were seated immediately at a little after 7pm on a Saturday night. Our waiter was very nice and attentive until he took our orders. Afterwards our food was brought to us, but no one checked to see how it was or if we needed anything else. Plates were taken away at the end and it was obvious the pasta was barely touched, but the busboy didn't ask about it, and the waiter didn't ask how our meal tasted.
Drinks were left unrefilled even after asking for refills. Seating was SUPER tight, having to shuffle tables so people could get in and out of the booths against the windows. I'm used to tight seating in Chicago, but this was to tight to the extreme.
We've been to other Rosebud restaurants (Gold Coast & Loop) and have really enjoyed the food and atmosphere, so we were a bit surprised that this one was a bit lackluster.
One of Rosebuds Best!!!!! – This is the first time I've been in since the name change (It used to be Ballo). I was in on this past Monday and I was WOWED! The service was great, the food was delicious, and the managers made it even better! Short and Sweet...this place is great, and have already recommended it to everyone I've seen since Monday!!!!
Pastas keep me coming for more!!!! – Have now been to Ballo three separate times for dinner, and I am looking forward to my next visit.
First off, if you are looking for a stuffy place this isn't the spot for you. Ballo is a fun restaurant not at all pretentious.
The food is top notch. The menu changes daily, and the kitchen is willing to make something up for you even if you don't see your choice on the menu. Nice touch. I have had everything from lasagna, chicken with a pesto sauce, to various other pasta dishes. All very good and prepared well.
Portions are ridiculously large so make sure you don't go overboard on appetizers. The desserts are also enormous, but who isn't willing to splurge on dessert?
I would definitely recommend Ballo to anyone looking for a fun casual spot.
Worst waitrress ever – Our waitress Amy was terrible. She was distracted, unattentive, and verry rude. She should be working at ihop. In fact, I've recieved better service at ihop. She needs to be fired immediately.
food, good. if you have patience... – we were staying in the hampton inn and suites (which is conjoined to this restaurant) and decided, based on an ad in the elevator claiming it was "family friendly" and that the 2 kids were screaming about being famished, that we should eat there ( we have a 1 and 5 year old). the kids' menu did the job - with the usual italian kid fare: pizza, mac and cheese, spaghetti - and the food we did get was good, with the exception of an $8 dry-as-the-desert piece of cake. it was the service that was unbelievable. our waitress - and i use that term generously - took 15 mins to tell us that the bottle of wine we'd ordered was not available. this was at 630pm on a wednesday, not when the place was even half full or when her attention would be split amongst 10-odd tables. she also got both adult orders wrong once, and then my order (the daily special mind you) wrong again. i was informed it was "computer glitch" and the meal i ordered would be out in 15 minutes, my kids' food had been delivered and devoured and we were now tetering on children meltdown. 15 mins was an eternity given i'd ordered an hour ago. what we did get - a massive caeser salad (complete with anchovies!!) for like $7 and a huge potion of tortellini for $18 - was quite good. however, kid friendly - not so much. loud bar scene. linen table clothes. servers that didnt recognize you dont deliver trays of hot food to a 1 year old. for more patient singles or couples who were not navigating nap schedules and the fact they didnt offer crayons with the menus, again, the food is good. but dont get tricked into thinking this is any semblance of a "family" restaurant.
Great for lunch or dinner - loved the spaghetti and meatball – This is place is great for dinner or lunch. For dinner it?s a great spot for a date or a group. It has a nice vibe, great service and great Italian food. I recently went there for lunch and asked the waiter what he recommended. He strongly suggested the spaghetti and meatball if I was spaghetti lover. I?m glad I took his recommendation. I had an enormous meatball in the middle and a very healthy portion of spaghetti. I couldn?t finish everything but it was excellent. Also, the service was highly professional and friendly.
Worst Service – We heard rave reviews about the food at Ballo, and decided to give it a try. We made sure to make reservations to avoid the risk not getting seated. When we arrived, we were told that we would have to wait for a couple of minutes. After waiting for an hour, we tried to ask the hostess if we would be seated anytime soon. The hostess was rude and didn't make any attempt to accommadate us. After waiting for fifteen more minutes, we decided to leave and eat somewhere else. We were extremely disappointed because the hostess again didn't seem to care that we left. We will never go there again regardless of how good the food may be. There are far better italian restaurants that offer quality food and excellent service.
Sorry Excuse for a Restaurant – One of the worst restaurants that I have ever been to. Made a reservation with the assumption that I would actually be seated in a reasonable amount of time. An hour later I was still left waiting at the bar with absolutely zero attempts on their part to rectify the situation. Ended up going somewhere else at which point the hostess seemed almost relieved that we were out of her hair. Additionally, there was a significant amount of surburban trash and tourists there that evening. No self-respecting city dweller should ever step foot in this sorry excuse for a restaurant.
Worst Resturant Experience Ever – Went to Ballo, after making a reservation one month prior. Had to wait over an hour to be seated. Customer service was the most horrible I have ever experienced. Management was extremely rude and unprofessional to me and my guests, he was too busy flirting with the young single girls to handle his other customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone, regardless of whether the food was good or not, I value good customer service and this place had NONE! Venture over to Keefers instead, they were extremely accomodating, food was great and customer service was a 10!!!
