We just had the awful experience at this restaurant. We arrived for dinner on a Thursday night and noticed the menu said there was a "two for 1 cocktails" special. We asked the waitress if this included wine and she said no, only cocktails. With that explanation, we ordered two cocktails. However, when the bill arrived, we were charged for both cocktails.
We assumed it was an error and asked one of the staff to correct it (our poorly comprehending waitress never showed up at our table and so another waiter tried to help). He returned to tell us it was "two for 1 PER PERSON cocktails," even though that was not what the menu said.
We asked to speak to the manager, CYRIL, he not only refused to take it off the bill -- even though he admitted both that the menu was misleading and that the waitress also didn't explain it to us -- but was exceedingly rude to us. We are disputing the bill and will NEVER eat there again.
Charming Ambience – This is one of my favorite places to bring out-of-town visitors for brunch and/or coffee, not so much for the food, prices and service but for the ambience and location. The decor inside is sunny and charming, and the outside seating area is a wonderful place to linger over coffee and dessert or a glass of wine (or two!) in the afternoon. Really the only drawback I find in this aspect is that like many restaurants in Europe, the seating is tiiiiight. You'll probably be sitting on top of the people at the table next to or behind you, and if you're seated at a banquette prepare to be trapped for the entirety of your meal.
Service is excellent when first arriving; guests are usually greeted and seated quickly. The manager, who seats a good deal of time is very good about recognizing repeat customers, and he does a good job of making me feel special. The waitstaff provides less timely and friendly service past the initial seating, and even after multiple visits I'd go so far as to say they are lax. Most of them have a charming French accent, but that doesn't make up the spotty service.
The food is good to fine, comprised largely of traditional French food that would appeal primarily to the American palate. Although the French are fond of such fare, there's no tripe, calf's head or calf's liver dishes to be found here. Wine quality and selection seems par with the food. The prices strike me as par with the quality and amount of food. If you take advantage of the different specials they have each night (e.g., Monday steak night, Wednesday 1/2 wine), the prices are even downright good.
All-in-all, I'd have to say that Cafe du Soleil has both its strong and weak points, but I enjoy it enough to return repeatedly.
Appreciate the customer service from the owner – Great food. I recommend the chicken crepes.
No service or Chef? – A friend used to go for the food and took me this time. He raved about the food but warned me that it would be slow. Slow is not the word for it - rude and indifferent. I understand waiting for freshly prepared quality cuisine but this was not the case. The chef, Matt, was there hanging out with his friends, and greeting others. When the food finally came, my friend said that it was totally not the same quality as it had been and he was sorry that he'd recommended it.
The chef hired someone else to do his job but he's not helping the waiters provide good service - maybe they should come over to my office and try being a lawyer!

Horrible service – I went for breakfast last Friday morning. In addition to the fact that 2 eggs bacon and potatoes were 12.95 and coffee an additional 2.75' it came with no bread or toast. Ok, so the prices are absurd. The bill with tax came to 17.31. i gave the snooty French waiter a 50.00 dollar bill and he brought me 32.00 dollars change. Now I know its only .69 cents that he shorted me but after paying an absurd amount for Bacon eggs and coffee, the fact that he ripped me off just incensed me. i called him over and it took me 5 minutes to explain that he made a mistake. he gave me attitude to boot. He went over to the bar to get me the rest of my change and after I waited another 5 minutes i just walked out.
the worst service and manager !!!! – we went there for my mom s birthday last week ....nobody at the door .. the manager was eatting at the bar comfortably and ignored us for a wile .. than a rude french waitress came to sit us at a very tiny table .... no water no bread till we asked for it .... and the waitress handeled us the brunch menu !!!! the food came late , cold and my mom s mussels were missing ,the mussels came. 15 mn late ... we wanted to talk to the manager ,,,he never came ... at the end the bill came with 20% tips included ,,we refused to give tips ... the french service supose to be the best but we experienced the worst !!!!
Rude staff – We have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years & haven't been there for a long time. Arrived at 10pm....person standing at door didn't acknowledge us for atleast 5 minutes so we continued looking at menu....then another waiter joined him & flirted w/ a girl...growing impatient, we walked in & asked a waiter if they were still open...he was very rude. We sat down & noone came to us for another 5 minutes...no water, nothing! when waiter came to table (with no water) we said we had questions...he hurriedly answered one question then walked away immediately, not allowing us to ask another question. We walked out and never going back & won't recommend. It's sad that wait staff can leave such an impression on a restaurant since I know the food has been good.
Consistently the worst service on the UWS – I'd give them no stars if I could.
I live nearby and have gone to C du S a number of times since they have opened ( many years now). The service is unbelievably bad- the waiters are pretty much always RUDE, you have to wait unbelievable amounts of time to get served. Tonight I stupidly forgot all of this and ordered ONE dish for delivery. I was told it would be 40 mins at the most, and I have now been waiting 1 hour and ten minutes. When I called to enquire how much longer, they gave me so much attitude just for asking. The man who answered the phone said " What do you want me to do about it?"
It's just not acceptable service, especially for the prices.
Good Brunch poor service – I went there on Sunday for Brunch and the place was busy (good sign). We were 4 and only had to wait for 5 minutes to get a table. 2 seconds after we sat down the waitress came to ask us what we wanted to drink so we kindly ask her to give us couples of more minutes... We all order eggs and weren't disappointed but our glasses of water were never refilled, waiter kept on pushing our chairs (we were next to the door) and asking us are you finish every 10 minutes...it was just a very stressful and noisy atmosphere and not typically what you are looking for Brunch.
The Best Gem on the Upper West Side – All I can say is WOW. Cafe DS was truly an amazing experience.
I travel to New York on business at least once a month and always look for interesting restaurants I can dine solo. I went to Cafe Du Soleil on a Tuesday night and was surprised to find amazing live Jazz music and what seemed to be a young hip local crowd. I sat at the bar and ordered an amazing ( and inexpensive) Bourdeaux and an appetizer. The bartender suggested the mussels. The were so flavorful I had to stop myself from ordering more. I opted for a chocolate dessert that was so delicious it was devoured very quickly.
Everything was fabulous, from the food, to the service and even the chef ( I had the opportunity to engage in conversation with Chef Tivy)
I will definitely return on my next trip to NY
