We should have known that this meal was going to be awful when we walked in at 6:30 PM and were the only customers in the restaurant - and we remained the only customers until we left.
I ordered chili paste noodles. What I got was a mound of gelatinous slime. Another reviewer compared them to mucus, which is spot on. When I pointed this fact out to the waiter, he tried to tell me that the noodles were supposed to be that way, as if I'd never been to a Thai restaurant before. I asked him to bring me some more noodles and he brought me a small bowl of the same mush, but without sauce. I let him know they weren't acceptable.
Any restauranteur worth his salt knows that when a customer gets an unsatisfactory meal, he has two options. He can either not charge the customer for the offending dish, or he can cook the customer something else. In this case I got neither. I was charged full price for the meal and was not offered anything in place the slime.
My husband ordered salmon curry and it was ok. Not great, but ok. He had to order rice separately because it didn't come with the dish!
It's too bad it was so awful, because this restaurant is a 5 minute walk away from our apartment and we would have been frequent customers if the food and service had been decent. As it is, we'll never go back.
Glass in orange chicken! – Oh my god, we've ordered from here several times, but just tonight my husband bit into glass in the orange chicken! The worse part is when we called to complain and warn them they barely cared. The person who answered couldn't understand that we didn't want to eat any of the remaining food and wanted a full refund. We had to argue to get the refund!
Excellent Thai(m) and Thai(m) again... – Sorry for that heading..couldn't resist...Rice and Spice has been one of my girlfriend and I's favorites since moving in to Queen Anne a couple years ago. Wassan, the owner, consistently goes out of his way to cater to my girlfriends allergy issues (eggs, gluten) and never without a smile. The thai food is some of the tastiest I have ever had here or in Thailand. Personal favorites include- Zion's Chicken, any curry on their menu (pumpkin, when available, is incredible), and garlic chicken are a few of our favorites. That being said, I very much doubt you can go wrong ordering anything else off their lengthy, and adventurous menu.
When you are in the mood for wholesome, fresh, and authentic thai give Rice and Spice a try. The staff will make you feel welcome, the food will make you sweat, and the perfectly balanced flavors will confirm the fact that Thai food is best left to the experts.
Something fishy – We ordered takeout from Rice & Spice for the first time last Saturday and were very disappointed. We've never actually disliked a Thai place, so this was a first. When it arrived, everything was cold and needed to be reheated, and so some things lost their crunchiness. My chicken dish smelled and tasted like fish, it appears that it was in oyster sauce, although it didnt say that on the menu. The smell made me nauseous and I had to throw the whole thing away. On a slightly more positive note, the crab rangoons, after being reheated, were tasty. We will never order from there again.
Not-so-great delivery – After driving by on a few occasions and seeing the dining room packed with people, we decided to try this for delivery. Most of the reviews on this site say the food is excellent, but we had a mediocre experience with the delivery service.
Almost an hour after we ordered, our food was finally delivered....and we live less than a mile away. We ordered Tom Kha soup, Thai Basil Chicken, and Fresh rolls. The soup was lukewarm and tasted like it had been sitting in the crock for a little too long. Good flavors, but just tasted a little old. The chicken dish was very tasty, albeit less than room temperature. There were plenty of vegetables in the dish, which is always nice, but again - it wasn't anywhere close to hot. FInally, the rolls fell apart, and the cellophane "paper" used for them literally stuck like glue to our fingers.
We will have to try dining in at the restaurant, but for now, we will not be ordering delivery from them again.
Great food, creative dishes, good value. One of the best Thai in the region! – There are some creative dishes that you can have in R&S. Like Zion chicken, Young coconut curry and Royal duck. They go especially well with Chimay. When it's in season, the Pumkin curry and Green halibut curry are must try. For dessert, you shouldn't miss the Coconut ice-cream with sticky rice. (The owner said the ice-cream is directly imported from Thailand) Everything is great here except the parking when there're events going on around the area. (It's close to Seattle center) My advice is go early.
Great Thai and very friendly staff – We eat here regularly and the food is always excellent and the daily specials are very good and creative. The owner is a very nice guy and the rest of the staff are very nice.
Great Value – Great food! Wonderful personal service. Food is amazing! Great white meat chicken and very high quality. Among the best Thai food I have ever had. I used to live next door and moved across town and I still make the visit to Rice & Spice because it is worth it!
Exquisite! – I do not know why I didn't try this place sooner... As a Lower Queen Anne resident I always went for the same big Thai spot but Rice 'n' Spice is by far better, less crowded, a way more intimate ambience and the food is so fresh. It's just great!
A Trip to Thailand – As soon as our party of five (3 adults, 2 children) entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a professional and courteous host and were seated promptly. We had ordered seven different dishes because they all sounded so wonderful and delicious. Meeting and fulfilling all of our expectations, the dishes tasted just as great as it sounded. The kids loved the soup and appetizers. To complete a meal we had also ordered the rich and tasty Thai iced tea and the bold and flavorful Thai iced coffee. The ambience was breath-taking as it created an amazing dining experience. What's even better is the value of the entire meal -- large portions at a fraction of the price. You must take a trip to Rice and Spice and not miss out on the amazing experience of authentic Thai cuisine.
