Upscale and trendy yet affordable and not stuffy – I found this place using City Search and I trusted all of the great reviews. I was not let down.
We did not make reservations which was a mistake. We still didn't have to wait too long (15 mins), but I still recommend reservations.
Our waitress was pretty awesome. She asked if we had questions about the menu and explained some of the dishes to us. She paired us with good wine for our dishes and came by several times to make sure we were ok.
I ordered and appetizer, a side and an entree and each was a unique creative dish. The kale w/ pancetta & ricotta salata was phenomenal, as was my appetizer the prosciutto, grapefruit and mint salad.
I would recommend this place for a date or even casual dining. There is something for a variety of price ranges. I'd go back for just appetizers and drinks as they have a nice wine menu.
STILL a great place – I love this place even years after it first opened. the atmosphere is warm inviting, non-pretentious. The food is delcious and ranging. People of any age, any income must try this place. everyone can be happy here.
One of the best restaurants in Minneapolis!!! Possibly the most creative Chef around!!! – Went to 112 Eatery for NYE and I must say, it was fantastic. We sat in the upstairs near the windows and our waitress was great. We barely realized she was there...unless we needed her, a drink, or anything, and then seconds later our drink would magically appear right in front of us, calling our names. It was almost like she was reading our minds!!!
The food was fantastic. I had the tagliatelle with fois gras meatballs along with a side of the fried bread with prosciutto. WOW. The tagliatelle was cooked al dente with a simple sauce and the meatballs were very flavorful!!! My wife had the egg sandwich which is flavored with spice and topped with bacon. She also couldn't resist getting a side of the gnocchi. The gnocchi is great with smaller dumplings and just a bit of Parmesan, and no sauce, which is a bit different then you'll find at most Italian restaurants. I still love it though because you taste the gnocchi for what it is, simple. Here are a few things that other people had...Steak (which my friend couldn't believe went well with wasabi), Pork Tenderloin, Mahi Mahi, and the 'best' Burger and fries. I believe that everything was amazing, and we were all members of the "clean plate club". The only thing that didn't get finished was the gnocchi that my wife had, only because she was full (I think) and that she's a bit of a gnocchi snob (she's used to Caffe Biaggio's, which is by far the best gnocchi in the Cities!!!) I was happy to help her finish that plate. The only complaint of the whole night as I can remember it, was that the Pork Tenderloin wasn't hot when it came out. It was warm though, and was more then acceptable.
We also had the chocolate potde creme, and the butterscotch budino which were both decadent desserts!!! If you love chocolate and you haven't had the chocolate potde creme from 112, then you haven't truly experienced the essence of chocolate.
Go to 112 Eatery if you love food.
Great experience – I went there with my husband for my birthday, and it was a fantastic experience. I was nervous at first because the hostess was a little less than friendly, but my server was amazing (Sarah D). The food was fantastic - I will forever need to have their scallops. The texture and flavor were unlike anything else I've had. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the risotto, but I have a feeling it was a personal taste preference and really nothing to do with the risotto itself. The steak prepared asian style was amazing, and the butterscotch dessert was unbelievable. Sarah was extremely knowledgable and friendly and made the experience even that much more pleasant. I would definitely recommend this restaurant - and will be back even if it's just for the scallops after work one day.
Best in the TC! – I always love this restaurant! GREAT customer service, and even better food. I wish I had standing reservations...
A True Disappointment – My friends and I went to the 112 Eatery expecting to be dazzled after reading all of the fantastic reviews on their website and from bits and pieces of foodie magazine articles commending the restaurant as being the "IT" reservation in Minneapolis. I could not have been more disappointed in the service and the food we received there. For starters our waiter, who we were forced to give a 20% gratuity to at the end of the night, was not only a poor server and an arrogant person, but was outright rude to the gentleman in my party that inquired about the 'Prosciutto and Frybread' dish, exclaiming that it hardly needed an explanation. Although my 'Romain and Roquefort' salad was excellent, my Tagliatelle and Fois Gras was overcooked, with sauceless and overseasoned egg noodles that could be lifted off my plate by sticking my fork into the middle of them. The meatballs were delicious, however, even though I could have sworn I ordered a half but received a whole serving. The cauliflower fritters were also excellent, though my companions frybread was nearly inedible as it had apparently been rolled in salt. After this we hardly were interested in dessert or sticking around for an after dinner spirit, and still the whole experience took us 2.5 hours. There are many excellent restaurants out there that are in need of patronage during this economic downturn, this is surely not one of them.
my favorite restaurant – I went with 4 of my friends on a Tuesday night, and we were seated promptly with no reservations. One of my friends and I are "aspiring foodies" at best, while the rest of our party would have been satisfied with fast-food. Regardless, our waiter treated us very well and did an excellent job explaining the menu and answering our questions. The scallops were perfectly seared and my salmon was delicious. The tagliatelle w/ foie gras meatballs that my friend ordered was equally impressive. My group of inexperienced diners left extremely pleased and I would recommend the 112 Eatery for anybody that is looking for an out-of-this-world dining experience in a laid-back and unpretentious atmosphere.
Worth the rush – I wasn't able to get a reservation except at 5 pm- made on the day of the reservation. I had to be out by 6:30, so it was a little rushed. Realizing that people who had reservations between 6:30 and 9 had made their reservations 3 to 6 weeks in advance, I was okay with that. This place is consistent on the food for sure. Don't blame service or the host, as seems in many reviews, if your mom was 15 minutes late and you made your reservation within the last 3 days and you feel rushed. Take it or leave it, you were told. You can have chain food down the street at this price. It isn't fine dining. It is great food at a great value in a fun New York style atmosphere. Try some of the more unusual things on the menu at a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere. The foie gras salad and sweet breads are fantastic. A cork fee exists to discourage you. They have a great list. Bring in a special bottle if you must, but don't try to be cheap and expect them to say it is no big deal. They mark up wine less than most places.
Say what you want, it is packed for a reason. If it is tough to get in, it is worth the wait. Trust that against an angry diner who didn't get their way. A bad experience in a jam packed place is bound to happen by mere congestion alone, give the service a break. I will always go back. It is fun, hip and food from a star chef.
Wow - what an experience! – I read a fantastic review of the restaurant in Best Life, so my wife and I made reservations for our anniversary. I was a bit nervous after reading the reviews, since they all spoke to poor service, but I thought it would be worth a try anyway.
Wow, am I glad we went! The service was excellent - we were seated immediately, and the waitress checked in with us regularly. She gave us an overview of the menu, then provided very thorough explanations of anything we had questions on.
As the review recommended, we started with the Romaine Leaves w/ Roquefort Dressing. I'm not a salad guy, but I loved this! We also had the mussels in shellfish veloute and lamb scottadito w/ goat?s milk yogurt. As the waitress recommended, we kept the bread to dip in the sauce, which was terrific.
We finished with the Sockeye Salmon, with a side of the creamed corn. The waitress recommended the creamed corn, and I'm going to definitely agree - if you visit, you need to order this! It's terrific. The salmon was also great - perfectly cooked.
I didn't see any of the service issues mentioned in the rest of the reviews - our waitress was very attentive, and we had a terrific time - a fabulous anniversary experience!
Good food, service lacking – Went to 112 recently with my wife for my birthday. Made the reservation in advance for 7:30 and was promptly seated upon arrival by a friendly hostess. Sat down and our waiter came over to take our order for drinks. Drinks were served along with a plate of olives and seasoned almonds which were very good. The waiter was pretty knowledgeable of the menu and answered our questions with detail. We then placed our order and nothing happened for a long time. Another table that was seated after us received a basket of bread and we had to ask for it. The waiter came and servied my wife more wine, spilled on the table, and didn't even bother to clean it up. My wife dropped her knife on the floor when our waiter was walking by and he didn't even offer her a new knife - we had to request one from the bus boy/food runner (by the way, this younger gentleman was probably the nicest server in entire place).
Just had an overall feeling of arrogance in the place. Most of the servers walked around with their noses up like they were working in some top restaurant. I just don't get it, you would think that the 112 servers would be extremely accomodating as they're most likely working for tips with a limited number of tables.
On to the food... We each had salads that were plain but pretty good. The lettuce was crisp and the roquefort dressing on my salad was rich and tasty. The two of us ordered three things to share - pork tenderloin, 112 burger, and the gnocchi. The pork was good but not great. I thought the sauce was fairly plain. Definitely could taste the fennel in it so if you don't like licorice flavor, you know what to stay away from... The burger was awesome. The sweet pickles served on the side complemented the melted brie very nicely. The gnocchi was probably our favorite. Pan fried and topped with parmesan - excellent!
I'll give it another shot as the food is the only thing warranting an "average" rating for 112. Just hope for good service!
