The Scene
With its wood paneling, Formica-topped tables and observant stuffed deer head, this friendly restaurant feels like a cross between an Elk's Lodge and an old-fashioned diner. Families and a diverse mix of neighborhood types chow down inside its two dining rooms; solo folks perch on round stools at the long bar.
The Food
The menu's home cookin' theme, with a Southern bent, presents a wide swath. A veggie burger, patty melt, Philly steak and the like make up the lunch-oriented part of the menu, while dinner dresses up with fried chicken and catfish. It's not perfect: The chicken can be a touch dry, and the Philly steak, while delightfully cheesy, isn't as tender as it should be. The homemade extra-large veggie burger, however, give non-meat eaters a reason to ignore the mounted deer head. Thankfully, the prices are low and the kitchen stays open until 2am, a rarity for the 'hood.

The sevice is relaxed (some would say slow), but in accordance with the atmosphere. The decor is a kitschy Lodge/Diner mix that makes you feel comfortable in any attire. All the food is delicious, though please don't eat it all in one sitting (we all need to fit into subway seats occasionally after all). This is a place to eat with family and friends not to impress clients or dates. My greatest complaint was the loud live music they've started to bring in for brunches - it neither works for families nor the hangover crowd, both of which adore this place.

Lots of strong feelings about this place, apparently, but I have to say that it's one of our local favorites. I admit there have been a couple of meals that disappointed me, but they were typically things that might have been on the overly-ambitious side for the kitchen. Gravy serves up a terrific breakfast or brunch--if you're lucky enough to get there on a day when there's a berry pancake special, look no further, because they're terrific. My experience with service has been mostly very good; there have been one or two less-than-stellar performers, but, hey, it ain't Alain Ducasse, so I can forgive. This is a comfortable place with decent food, and it's been a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Gravy's numerical rating on Citysearch is missing ... perhaps an act of mercy? Gravy doesn't do anything right, which is too bad, because it's got a prime location and serves food later than most places in the area. Avoid at all costs and give your money to a place that actually cares to improve itself.
