Great sushi - excellent fish – We visited Agami for the third time on the Thursday after Christmas, and remain impressed with this great place. The editorial review is old - they do have their liquor license and have a good selection of sakes. The waitress also let us sample some of the names we weren't familiar with before we picked a bottle.
Their fish is excellent, especially compared to other nearby spots. They serve very fresh, very good-size cuts of nigiri, with very little rice and wasabi. It's a much more genuine experience than other places, which have only rolls and nasty fish. The ambience is great, especially the big red booths up front, though next time we'll probably sit next to the sushi bar to talk to the chefs.
We finished our meal with some tamago and a little bottle of sparkling sake. It was fantastic and we will definately be back soon!
Amazing sushi and service! – My boyfriend and I hadspent the last week searching for the perfect spot to celebrate our 1st anniversary, and since I'm a huge sushi fan, we decided to go that route. We searched metromix and city search reviews, hoping to find a great, fresh and romantic spot to go to and splurge on, and then we stumbled upon the Agami page, and decided to go.
Am I ever glad we did! We made an 8pm reservation on a Thursday night for a 'curtained booth' and we were immediately seated by our friendly hostess. Our spot was very cozy and trendy, and we had a perfect view of the sushi chefs at work! Instead we closed our curtains and were able to enjoy the 'crunchy melt' (to die for!!) and dragon roll (yummy), tuna roll and philadelphia roll (traditional but delicious maki) in our private booth. Everything was super fresh and very flavorful.
Our server was so cute and happy, and gave us great suggestions on martinis (try the pear martini or the fuzztini, very fresh and not too sweet or overly strong, just right!) and also gave us the privacy we wanted. The busboy was even a doll! I cannot imagine a better experience for our 'special night out.'
While the price was little higher than what we normally spend on sushi, we both felt that it was worth every penny. The atmospere and service along with the amazing sushi were the perfect spot for we were looking for.
We certainly hope that this incredible spot is around for awhile, because we can't wait to go back!!
Great sushi! – I've lived in the neighborhood of Agami since it opened, and have just never made the trek inside. This past weekend, I tried it and was more than pleasantly surprised. It was pricier than my normal sushi place, and I agree with the recommendation that it be a "special night out" treat instead of an everyday kind of restaurant, but I loved it, and I will most certainly be back. We tried the "spicy tuna rice crispy" appetizer on a recommendation, and thought it had just the right amount of spicy kick. The Green Turtle roll was amazing, I love the combination of unagi and avocado in anything, and this one was done really well. The Fire roll was pure fun, set on fire using Bacardi 151, and set on the table flaming. The roll itself wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, just perfectly done. The Crunchy Melt roll was interesting, though I've had better "cheese melt" sushi before. I can't wait to try all the other maki combinations on their menu. Overall, we highly enjoyed our sushi dinner, and our drinks (my date got a flight of sake, I loved the pear martini), and will be returning to Agami as soon as we are able. I highly recommend this restaurant to sushi lovers.
Love the setting! – The view is nothing to look at (I mean, come on, not the nicest street) but the view inside is well worth it. Such a fun athmosphere and beautiful setting - hip lighting and a fun menu - loved it!
Best Sushi in Chicago with amazing decor – I really like this place. Yes, it's expensive, but I truly feel it's worth it. If I just want quick sushi, I'll go somewhere else, but this place really comes up with some of the most creative sushi I've tried, and delicous renditions of old staples like spicy tuna. My favorite is the Ocean Drive which utlizes Mango and is one of the freshest rolls I've ever tried, and the Green Turtle is presented so beautifully you won't want to eat it at first... but it's also so delicous...! Excellent sake flights available. Lots of non-fish on the menu, but everyone I've been there with has focused on the sushi alone, and everyone loves it.
Agami had taken a step in the Uptown neighborhood by making a really trendy place. At first, the decor was a little too much for me, but it has really grown on me. I love the big round booths in the front. I think they need to promote themselves more, because I don't want to see this great place go away. There have been some negative reviews. Don't treat this place as your everyday sushi place, or you will get annoyed by prices. This place is a special occasion that is WORTH EVERY PENNY. Unfortunately, it's just not something I can do as often as I would like.
ugh this place is going down hill – I was first there when they opened last year and thought my experience was great, but went last week and i have to say that they food was awful and stingy and full of rice. i went on a friday at 7 pm and it was dead dead dead, and i know why now.
Awful service and highly overpriced – Wow, what a horrible dinner experience my guests and I had. The food is decent but very over priced. All that was overshadowed by the horrible service we encountered. The manager did not inform us of a corkage fee (15.00) per bottle (we had 5 bottles). The manager was not friendly upon asking for some clarification. All he said was "you have a choice, go some where else." I couldnt believe his attitude or business ethics. Very unprofessional and not willing to answer my questions or work with me. I will not be going back and hope others who read this "Make another Choice besides Agami." There are to many other restuarants in Chicago and I forsee a quick exit by this one.
Great experience on NYE – Went to Agami for NYE dinner and had a wonderful experience. The food is absolutely delicious (order the stuffed mushroom app, green turtle and agami speciliaty maki). It was some of the best sushi we have ever had. The atmosphere is very fun and hip - I felt like we were in a W. Loop restaurant without the attitude. The only down side was that service was a little slow. We had brought a bottle of wine ($15 cork fee), but the table next to us waited a half hour for their drinks. The section could have used one more waiter. overall, a wonderful experience and a top Chicago sushi spot - loved it!
The fresh seafood stands out this aquatic-themed sushi spot in Uptown. – The Scene
A subtle storefront belies a fanciful interior, with a dining room featuring a curved bar, sushi bar and various seating options throughout, including low-slung loungers and striking red booths. Textured turquoise walls simulate the sea, and dramatic, ceiling-high sculptures mimic aquatic foliage. Lucite sheets have "bubbles"--carve-outs serving as bottle holders for the bar, while large screens playing looped underwater footage drive home the theme.
An extensive menu sports dozens of familiar maki, nigiri and sashimi options, plus some seasonal standouts like silky super-white tuna. Distinctive appetizers, like yellowtail tartar wrapped in shaved cucumber, are popular sushi alternatives, and the Totoro Kani, a flavorful combo of avocado and shrimp tempura gets unexpected punch from a tuna tartar topping. Non-sushi entrees include grilled beef and chicken dishes, but seafood is the star. Grilled lobster benefits from a sweet and spicy baste, sauteed vegetables and a potato pancake.
Go to Agami! – this place was great! the sushi and shumai we had were delicious, the server was wonderful - she was prompt and efficient and gave us plenty of suggestions. the restaurant atmosphere was fun and cool - lots of effects to seem like you were underwater. i would go there again!
