Hidden treasure, inexpensive homestyle Japanese cooking. Healthy Food. – After visiting a dentist in the area, I saw Kitchen Kura and decided to give it a try. The interior feels very homey and what you'd imagine a small town restaurant in Japan would be like. The lunch menu is very simple with maybe 15 items, all with photos to make your choices easy. For $6.70 you get to pick two main entree items and also get a heaping pile of rice and a fresh garden salad. Talk about value. The food was delicious and not at all greasy as some Asian food can be. If you are on the way to the Zoo, especially with your family, this is a must try spot. Not only is the food healthy and delicious, it's very inexpensive. Just a couple of blocks from the metro. I also found some great produce stores in the vicinity that had great fruit at a fraction of the cost of chain supermarkets.

Flavorful, deep-fried chicken, tofu, sausage, smoky bonito-boiled vegetables and other satisfying options are served with great care and pride at this homestyle Japanese eatery. Generous portions come fast and inexpensive based on prix-fixe deals -- two whole entrees for lunch or take-out -- and a la carte offerings. The dining room seats roughly 20 and is clean, intimate and spare.
Excellent for what it is: tasty, simple, hearty, homestyle Japanese food – This adorable little restaurant serves up some extremely yummy, filling food. First off, though, abandon some of your preconceptions of Japanese food. No raw fish, no delicate, austere presentations, and no big bill.
Meals are bento box style, with above average miso soup, a green salad, and rice, as well as two or three items of your choice. The food is largely battered and deep-fried, with different presentations of pork, chicken and fish in this style, all served with appropriate dipping sauces. There are some healthier alternatives in the sukiyaki, pickled vegetables, and white fish in broth. Everything I've had has been delicious, although I found the chicken teriyaki a underwhelming and the "deep fried chicken sausage", which as far as I can tell is in fact a breadcrumb-coated, deep-fried hot dog, a little strange. There are also standalone entrees, but the multi-item meals are so good I've never tried them.
Both eating in and taking out are good options. Take out versions of the multi-item meals are smaller portions but several dollars cheaper, while eat in versions cost a little more (still in the neighborhood of $10 per person) and the portions are huge, easily enough for dinner plus lunch the following day. That's a steal for so little. Service at the restaurant is casual but very attentive and friendly.
As good as Kitchen Kura is, it's definitely not for every day, or even every week, eating given how unhealthy it is. But for comfort food it's top notch, and perfect fare for a cold, rainy night.

Mom's recipe made me addicted! It's very very affordable price, too.
Best Family Japanese food in town – This is a family owned, small kitchen with 5-6 tables. Very simple but delicious home cooking style food. I strongly recommend tofu burger/Egg roll if you are a vegetarian. Three item dinner w/ soup & salad is under $10.
