Local, slow food at its simple and delicious best. My go to spot for working breakfasts on week days.
The interior is a sight: gorgeous open kitchen with copper pots and pans lining the hoods. All of the food here is fresh, delicious and keeping with San Franciscan tradition, very seasonal. And their case of baked goods will leave your mouth agape--every tart and slice of cake is beautifully crafted.
Ok Food, odd service – My experience, without going into too much detail, leaned toward the average side.
The food, while very tasty and creative, was almost cold upon delivery. Our host was not talkative at all so on his two visits to our table we had to initiate the conversation both times. This was after he initially took our entree orders and turned to leave before we had finished ordering our complete meal.
I tend to enjoy a bit of hospitality from the host of an establishment, or at least a hello, would you like to know more about our menu? Understandably we skipped appetizers and dessert.
My hopes are that service will improve. Boulette's has alot going for it. Poor service tends to make me not return, regardless of the food.
Unique Ferry Building store charms busy home cooks with organic ingredients and ready-to-cook gourmet takeout. – In Short
An open kitchen, communal table and wood-burning fireplace make this small artisans' food shop feel more like a chef's home than a restaurant. A daily breakfast and lunch menu, made with fresh ingredients purchased at area farmers' markets, is also offered. For dinner, a seasonal selection of "building blocks"--partially and fully prepared meals--are offered, often including reduced duck stock, organic chicken broth and dry cake mixes.
Misguided and elitist – Boulette's is quite beguiling with it's gorgeous appointments, wall of spices and eccentric offerings, but one step inside and you'll wish you hadn't bothered. Besides the astronomical markups (you'll find many of the same products elsewhere in the city for less), ask the wrong question, or perhaps don't fit the mold, and the chilly response you'll receive from the owner is enough to freeze ice crystals in August! I love so many of the merchants in the ferry building, so it was quite surprising to find this place so elitist. Not mention that it's downright confusing--you'll have a hard time figuring out how to interact with it. Is it a cafe? a deli? a cooking school? a vanity project? Good luck!
