I love Candelari's. I have only been a few times, but everything I have had has been spectacular. Great for take out, too

This review is for Candelari's in KATY, TX.

I went to Candelari's to try their Sunday buffet. I arrived around 1:15 pm. It wan't that busy, however when I went to check out the hot food area I immediately knew why. To begin with I was turned off just by looking at the buffet table. There was a few slices of pizza on three pans. Not enough to make one pizza. The sausage pan had about two spoon fulls left in it. The pasta pan has a little ball of heat lamp dried pasta in the center. Nothing there seemed to be cared for. We decided to make a break and get out of there feeling disgusted. I have stopped in there one time before about two years ago during the week for the lunch buffer. That was a bit better then. I will say that if you order from the menu the food is fresh and delicious. I don't know why they do a buffet that looks so unappetizing and neglected. This done not help with the restaurants overall appeal.

Beyond Belief! – Want a heaping helping of Rudeness and Arrogance by a manager along with a mouthy and drink ignorant red-headed barmaid, then hurry over to CANDELARI'S Pizzeria on Washington St. You won't be disappointed!! To make matters worse add in an Arrogant Owner who does not respond to a complaint and it makes for a recipe for a miserable meal!! Since when do neighborhood businesses not treat local customers from Rice Military with respect and courtesy; especially SENIOR CITIZENS???? Shame on you Mike May!!! Being Italian, I would have thought that you were taught better!!

PS: Alejandro is great!

Thanks for the help Alejandro – Alejandro, the on duty manager, was very friendly and gave us great customer service when we had our last visit. We also got to sample some desert as it was our 1st visit and it was fantastic. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a new and outstanding pizza place to visit.

$2 Shiners = Win – Where can you go and get $2 Shiners aside from here on happy hour; not many. $2 buys a candy bar in this day and age that use to cost 50 cents 15 years back. It's nice that there are still a few good deals to be found and Candelari's Pizzeria has one of them.

Poor customer service – I've yet to get a response from a manager, so I am posting this email that I sent to him or her. I would give the place 2 stars, but since I've gotten no response, it's a one star.

To Whom It May Concern:

This evening, we (6 adults and a baby) dined at the Cypress location for the first time. The pizza was probably one of the best pizzeria-style ones we've had, but unfortunately because of the poor customer service, we did not enjoy our time . The young lady taking my order at the counter did not greet me and the only words conversed to me was "please sign this copy" of my credit card charge. I had to ask, "is that it?" to figure out if the order was done. We ordered an appetizer and only received 4 appetizer plates to use among 6 adults. When the pizzas arrived, there was also no smile or words to greet us either to enjoy the pizza. One of the pizzas was missing a topping that we paid for, so I went back to the counter to ask for a refund. Again, no words were conversed. This same young lady who took my order earlier just walked away (obviously to find a manager) without saying a word to me. Most upsetting to me was when another lady came to refund me in cash, there was no "sorry for the inconvenience" for making a mistake on the order, only said "here are your two dollars". No other workers came by to ask how everything was. When the plates were removed from the table, no one asked how our meal was. I did not even see smiles to customers, except there was a young african-american gentlemen who was very nice to his customers at other tables around us. I should have gotten his name so you could commend his work ethic.

I tipped at the register when ordering, which I figured out later with this experience that I should not have. With these attitudes of the staff, I felt like I was inconviencing the workers by dining at their restaurant. Sort of like we were bothering them. Even if our pizza order was not missing a topping and if I had another $10 off $30 coupon to use in the future, I would have to be very, very convinced to dine there again.

Too much hype, Subpar Pizza – We visited Candelari’s on Washington Ave. on 05/16/10 around 5:45pm. The restaurant had 6-8 tables occupied in the dining room and a few more outside. After selecting to be seated inside we were shown to a table in the section that held most of the guest. The waitress was slow in getting to the table and explained that she had three other tables and was “really busy.” We selected a bottle of Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon (2008) which was offered at a reasonable price ($32).

We had to call our waitress back to place our order of one Margherita Euro Style Pizza and one Papa Albert's with the thin crust. The margherita was very nice, fresh tomatoes and basil but a little short on the mozzarella. Unfortunate the crust was soft and soggy definitely NOT like the “Italian” pizzas served in Rome of which was expected. All in all the pizza was good, about average with the exception of the crust which was sub-standard. My Papa Albert’s pizza was a bit better relative to what was expected. The crust was good, the amount of toppings was less than expected on a 12” pizza selling for $17.00. The sausage was good but lacked the fennel I’m use to in homemade Italian sausage from true Italian kitchens. The Papa Albert’s was to have had both sausage and pepperoni, but mine was served without the pepperoni: rather than make a fuss I accepted what was delivered. This was only after the situation we experienced as we were seated. The table next to us was served an incorrect pizza along with the balance of their food and it was about 10 minutes before the correct pizza was delivered. In summary, it was an average pizza dinner with a nice bottle of wine with a BIG tab of $67 before tip. Service was slow and lackadaisical. Not worth the price and you can certain find better pizza in Houston and most with a better value for the money.
