Wednesday Night 1/2 off Wine – I had been to Jay's for breakfast (which I love) before but never for dinner. I lucked out and went on Wednesday which is 1/2 price bottle wine night. We shared a great Sauv Blanc with a beautiful spinach salad, great pizza and wonderful pasta. It is a very small space but great simplistic atmosphere. Service super friendly. Hey, we just might go tonight too.
CP Best Gourmet Pizza??? – Pizza was blah. Terrible bread on all the sandwiches. Nothing worth recommending. A $15 burger on the dinner menu is ridiculous. The dining room was swelteringly hot and the floor looked filthy. Service friendly.
Pick pork, pasta, or pizza - great 4 cheese pizza! Skip the walleye! – I went there for dinner with my hubhub and his mother on a weeknight. Service was pleasant. Mother ordered the roasted pork loin with caramelized brussel sprouts, house made spaetzle and organic black cabbage pesto - she says this was AWESOME (I tasted the spaetzle and it was very yummy and creatively prepared!). My hubby had the braised beef short ribs - he said it was very good. I ordered walleye and the 4 cheese pizza (to share). I could've skipped the walleye (bland), but the house made pasta that came with it was lovely! Fresh pasta is soooo good! The 4 cheese pizza that night was, I must say, the best I've had in town (yes I've gone to Punch_Pizza in Highland, Pizza Nea, etc, etc, but hey, the crust wasn't burnt like at P.nch!).... those big, beautiful, soft blobs of goat cheese were heavenly....I went back for the pizza again about a week later, and of course it wasn't quite as perfect. 2nd time the crust was a little tougher and the heavenly blobs of goat cheese were not big, and so not technically "blobs". Still very good pizza, though! My hubby's main complaint - cold feet due to cold floor. I would keep going back - it's nice to have small, local, chef-owned restaurants to choose from, and though some tweaking of some dishes is definitely needed, it gets my support :)
Food Was Off – I recently visited Jay's with another couple who we dine with often. The service was good, the ambience average (not overly inspiring) but three out of four of us had dishes that simply did not taste anything better than average. Considering the restaurant's alleged attention to quality, local food products, the flavorings should have highlighted things much better than they did. WIth so many choices in town I can't say we'll be back any time soon.
No-frills cafe brings inventive breakfast and lunch cuisine to Midway. – In Short
This simple bistro is no larger than a bedroom. The nicked-up tables aren't disguised with fancy linens and the linoleum floor doesn't have a shiny coat. Instead, the focus is on the food. Creative entrees such as egg and smoked Gouda crepes, a tamari noodle salad and a horseradish beef sandwich, attract a mix of causal neighborhood folks and serious foodies from across town.
A nice little spot to eat – We recently ate at Jay's for lunch. My husband absolutely loved the Pork Hash. I had the roast beef sandwich and it was average. Service was great. We'll be back. Hopefully they'll expand their service to dinner.
