One of the best fried chicken joints in town even though I could live off their pickles and biscuits alone! Amidst, the chic Culver City restaurants near by, this "down home" comfort food fueling station still shines.
Sometimes all you want is fried chicken and a biscuit. Well, that's pretty much all they sell here (and a side of fries).
It's not fried chicken from The South as they pretend, but it's good. The biscuits were dry so I'd stick with KFC, but the drumstick was tasty enough. Metered street parking available.
Didn't like it – thought it would be good, but was disappointed.
This is the best fried chicken and biscuits EVER! – If you are ever in the Culver City area I highly recommend HONEY KETTLE. Not only is it in a great area the food is awsome. Trust me you will be pleased.
do NOT order by phone – do NOT order by phone. they don't begin making your food until after you get there, wait in line, and then pay, so it saves you zero time. and they aren't competent enough to get an order correct over the phone anyway. So, while you're waiting, you'll look at your bill, realize they're making the wrong thing, and have to start all over again.
chicken's pretty good, though.
OMG - Terrible, Terrible, Terrible – I went with my wife today for the first time. Was a recommendation from a certain someone over at Good Day LA (Fox) for being "great food". I eat out at a lot of restaurants ($ to $$$) and being a Foodie of sorts I have a habit of noticing all the little things that make me want to come back or never return to an establishment. With that said I had to put down a bet that Honey's Kettle will be gone/out of biz by summer '09.
OMG, where do I begin? Dirty floors and tables...staff must be "too busy" to wipe and sweep and take out the overflowing trashcan. Staff must have been too stoned to care about service or our experience. Honey, please get rid of them all and get a group with some ENERGY who are helpful and glad to see a paying customer. Food took soooooooo long to get....20 mins and then I had to return my wife's $9 chicken and rice bowl b/c it was just so subpar. Seriously, I have had a better chicken sandwich from McDonalds and Chick Filet. Most mall food is much better than this should be "hole in the wall".
Average tasting fried chicken – I find this place to be the total opposite of what everyone says. The service is ok, but the chicken was far from tasty; it's average at best. Popeyes and KFC are a lot better. However, I think the biscuits were some of the best I have ever had.
Service needs some serious improvement – I have only had the biscuits here so I can't comment on the greasy chicken that so many folks have talked about. The chicken looked like Pioneer's so I was having no parts of it. But the biscuits are THA BOMB! I will drive all the way to Compton for the biscuits and get some chicken from Louisana.
Above-average chicken, really below-average service. – If you like your chicken sweet and greasy this is the place for you. The fried chicken is pretty good--definitely better than KFC but can be greasy. Pricey for what you get. Really good biscuits if you like them sweet. (The name is Honey's Kettle after all) The sweet potato pie was dried out and not anything special (guess it was under the heat lamp too long--maybe because other people knew to skip it). Fries can be fresh or practically inedible depending on how long the heat lamps have been on them. Although the food can be enjoyable, it's spotty. The service though is pretty consistently subpar--ranging from indifferent to just awful. If you're going to eat here mentally prepare yourself to wait twice as long as you would someplace else and then you'll still be frustrated because the food will still take longer than that. You'll be looking at a pile of food ready to go under the heat lamps, but crew takes so long to fill each order and does the orders in a haphazard manner--check your food before you leave the counter because you get orders that are incomplete or just plain wrong. The staff demeanor is indifferent at best and sometimes just rude. The slow staff problem is exasperated by the disorganization in front --saw 3 different members of the counter staff open the oven by the register to put in more biscuits only to see that there were already biscuits baking, requiring them to walk all the way back to replace the biscuits on the cart. In the meantime, no food is being served.
Mmmmm, fried food! – What's not to love...especially love the chicken strips and vegetable skewers. It can sometimes take a while to get your food, but that's only because the strips are made to order. Worth the wait for sure!
Editorial Review – Bright and small fast-service spot in the heart of downtown Culver City serving Southern style grub like fried chicken, catfish and buttermilk biscuits with honey.
