DON'T PLAY HERE!! – Shitty to play if you're in a band. You go there to perform for no pay.. and get treated like crap by the security people. Every time I'd go out for a cigarette, there's a different guy at the door.
Like seriously these guys can't stay at their post for more then half an hour to where someone may recognize me? I was getting ready to leave and go back in to get my equipment... and some jerk off in a backwards hat stops me holding his arm in front of me.. sayin' "let go of the door" and giving me an attitude. I said "i need to get my gear. My band just did a show" to which he responded "back away from the door"
Like I need to have some two bit schmuck telling me I can't get my gear where I JUST did a friggin' show.
The guy who let me in earlier wouldn't simply vouch for me having already been in there. There was no stamping or marking system to where I could have presented my wrist or whatever. If you go out the door... and wanna go back in.. better hope it's the same guy who let you in the first time, or you might not be able to get back in. And don't leave without all your possessions on you. I had to have my friends go get my gear..... friggin' ridiculous.
I'm never playing this place again. I've read other people talk about their overzealous bouncers... only to find out how absolutely right they were.
Very haphazard and disorganized just like the booking people.... and the set times wound up being much different then what I was told ahead of time. And the sound guy showed up an hour after the first band was supposed to start.
Bottom line... If you have a band... DON'T play here.
Sweet Place – I showed up last Wendesday and my mind was blown. This place is dope... dim lights around all sexy setup...perfect to meet people. I was hearing some bad ass tunes coming for the underground so I went down to the basement and checked out a sweet band. Great times. Seriously recommend checking this place out.
Great Music on Wednesday Nights! – I stopped by FatBaby for the first time last Wednesday to check out the scene. I was told that a great band plays every Wednesday night, and as a music blogger, I just needed to check things out. I was extremely impressed. FatBaby has a great vibe, seemingly bringing the NYC lounge and indie music scene to one place. The lights were dim, booths were full, and the music was original, the only kind of music I wanna hear these days. I will be back here again.
Good place, Used to have comedy – Used to have a comedy night on Tuesday hosted by David The Voice Stein. Real funny guy. Sadly that show is no longer happening but it is still a cool place to go.
Everything Was Stolen – I went there on saturday and both me and my friends purses were stolen. Someone found my friends stuff around the area and returned it..my stuff is still gone. I looked around the area to see if they dumped my stuff by hers, and instead, I found someone else's purse! (I returned it to the precinct because it had no ID in it) Clearly, this happens a lot at this place. My friends wallet was stolen from there the night before. The management doesn't care so if you go there, don't put your stuff down!
place stank homeless – Tuesday night we went there lil earlier than my friends band was suppose to play, first of all, place stank, we said its alright we will give it a try. Then we decided to drink, went to the bar, bartender looked not happy, asked for margarita, don't know what she put in it, tasted really foul, asked bartender if she made margarita, she said yes,my wife said its really weak, she took our glass and added orange juice in it.......that was it for FAT BABY.....sorry if bartender puts oj in margarita .......never going back, we just left...........enter at your own risk
Our stuff was stolen here – Came here for a party with a big group of friends. They were totally unprepared to handle a group of our size, despite the fact that we had arranged the party weeks in advance. Bartender was intentionally as slow as possible and it took forever to get a drink, and the drinks he poured were super weak. All of this should probably be expected from a night out on the LES, but to make matters worse, several people in our party had things stolen (purse with cell phone, wallet, etc., coats, etc.). The bouncers were completely unhelpful and didn't seem to care much. Since then, I have heard that these kinds of thefts are not uncommon and occur pretty regularly at Fat Baby, so I would not be surprised if it's something the management/bouncers know about and turn a blind eye to. Other than us, the crowd was pretty cheesy - B&T/outer-borough/corporate wankers in button-downs with too much hair gel and cologne. AVOID Fat Baby at all cost.
Avoid at all costs – This place is way to crowded if you want to dance, the bartenders take at least 10 min to get you adrink, even when I was paying it took 20 min to get my bill adn change, but the worst thing is that someone is stealing stuff in that bar, a bunch of people had a party down there and lost a bunch of purses and phones, some of the stuff turned up in the trash can with no money or valuables in it, this is not the first time this has happened and some other people have told me of similar experiences.
The place could be amazing, but it's not.
NEVER going again – I booked my sister's birthday party here after I heard from a friend that she'd been to some fun parties there and the people didn't even need to get a bottle. However, when I e-mailed someone about a reservation, a bottle was required for the table... it wasn't too expensive for NYC standards ($225, including gratuity), so we went ahead with it figuring that they would treat us and all of our friends well if we shelled out some money. Needless to say, that wasn't the case.
First, they gave my boyfriend a hard time about going in, b/c "he wasn't wearing a collared shirt," after the bouncer had just let a line of people in front of him in who were in north faces and t-shirts under them.
Then, this security guard on a power trip hassled us the whole time we were there!! He screamed in my face b/c I said I didn't want to check my coat, and threatened to kick my friend out when he told the bouncer not to speak to a girl like that. I was APALLED!!
The final straw was when this bouncer hassled my friend, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, because he was having trouble staying up. I get that he had to leave, but the bouncer treated him awfully, pushing him out the door, even after we told him what was wrong! Then when I finally insisted on speaking to a manager about all that was going on, the manager simply said he believes his staff over me, and I should basically leave if I had a problem with it.
So if you don't feel like reading my entire story up there, just read this : DO NOT GO TO FAT BABY, especially for an event that you want to be special, like a birthday. Plus - WAY too crowded.
Good for parties – I had a birthday party here this past weekend- reserved some tables upstairs on the mezzanine by the DJ. There was a one bottle/table minimum, bottles about $200/each.... not a bad price for the neighborhood.
It was great being upstairs because the downstairs gets so crowded it can start to look like a frat party. The music was awesome and the ambiance is a blast. The place overall is a nice mix of not too old, not too young, not B&T, sort of hip but not weird.
Our guests were able to skip the line (well, most of the them- the bouncer was a little pissy/confused by the end of the night and made some guests stand outside for a while). Skipping the line is important- If you have to wait in line, it can take up to a half hour to get in after midnight.
Biggest negative was the waitress. The service wasn't very good- we had to hunt down the waitress to get our mixers and ran out of ice multiple times. She pretty much tossed down the bottles, took our money, and never came back. Given we paid a 25% service charge, I don't think it was crazy to expect to be checked in on at least once or twice.
Overall, it was a great time though and I'd go back- I'd just make sure to get some better service or refuse to pay such a high tip/ service.
