Real Shame for the Caribbean Cuisine. Stay AWAY!!! – I am Cuban; i was raised eating Caribbean food. I used to come to this restaurant couple year ago and was good. Now in my last visit i found a place with a lot of issues:
- Server was not polite and not caring for the customers (real BAD attitude).
- No more plantains chips on the table (at least for me and my companion).
- Have to wait more than 45 minutes for the meal.
- When i got the food, was cold and blend.
From been one of the places to go in order to get some decent food, had become a place to definitely avoid.
Positive about the place: I didn't die of food poisoning.
Latino no no nada q ver, – He visitado este restaurant en tres ocasiones.La primera vez, pedi ropa vieja y estaba fria y picante.la segunda vez fui y el arroz blanco estaba duro.y el dia de fathers day invite a mi esposo, pensando q habia mejorado la cocina y fue peor q las veces anteriores.tuve q devolver los frijoles era pura agua y tres granos de frijol nada mas,el congry le dieron la raspa o la parte pegada del caldero.no era fresco.El churrasco lo pedi bien cocinado y estaba crudo...ya no voy mas.El sandwich cubano caroooo y que va mejor es el de Cuba Bakery en round rock.
it was alright. – i was born in the dominican republic, so believe me, i know dominican food well. their ropa vieja was not as good as i expected and the magu was nothing like the mangu i eat in the dominican republic. everything was extremely over salted. however, there were some good things: boiled yuca, arroz con guandules, chicharrones de pollo, and their mojo. the staff was friendly, but slow. it was also over priced, considering the quality of the food.
Food Is Always Served Cold – The restaurant has potential to be excellent. The staff is friendly, and they are understanding when the complaints are valid. However, the kitchen has some major drawbacks. Expect to wait an incredibly long time, as they have limited staff. When the food does arrive, it is ALWAYS cold!!! The rice and beans are always room temperature, as if they just pulled it out of a pot that has been sitting on the stove!! Two times my dish was returned, before I just gave up! By the time the rice and beans were warm, everything else was cold. They refried my tostones, and gave it back with a bite I had taken from it. I, unfortunately can't recommend a place that offers this service.
Awesome place to eat and enjoy! – I loved the food, Service and that it is like a hole in the wall. Thats what makes it awesome. Aside of course the great tasting food. I am a Puerto Rican from NYC and this is the closest i can get to home cooked meals from home. It takes me back to my grandma cooking int he kitchen :)
Best Tres Leches, Caipirinha, Great Food – Started with Caipirinhas,beers and plantain/dip. Had pork, chicken, beef...each dish very tasty and the seasonings were unique and so flavorful. Nice size entres with 3 sides fill huge plate. Brought half home. Ended with Tres Leches cake which was HUGE. Fed 3 of us. Will be going back! Highly recommended.

Friendly prompt service and good caribbean fare – Caribbean food seems to be hard to find in the Austin area, so I was eager to give this restaurant a try. We weren't sure where we were supposed to park. It's not well designated, so we parked in the lot next door. It was very clean and pleasant inside. The menu had a good assortment of choices. We ordered Mexican martinis (OK, nothing extra special),shrimp appetizer (fantastic), flank steak, and tres leches cake. The steak had a wonderful marinade on it, was cooked exactly as I requested and was quite tasty. The fried plantains were excellent! The food we had was defintely NOT SPICY, which pleased my husband especially. Our server was attentive and pleasant, but not pesty. The Tres Leches was the best I've ever had... I'm planning on ordering one for our Christmas party. Definitely a "thumbs up" for something out of the ordinary.
Is there a fatal dose for garlic? – Yikes! Cafe Mangu has two flavors ... unbelievably bland and horribly overseasoned.
Typical of the bland fare are the plantain chips the server brings to your table immediately upon seating. Remarkably flavorless, absolutely no taste at all. Later in the meal I was dismayed to find that the side dishes ... the red beans, black beans, arroz amarillo, and arroz congri were also very bland.
The other horribly overseasoned end of the spectrum begins with the garlic dipping sauce served with the aforementioned plantain chips. I don't know if there is a fatal dose for garlic, but Cafe Mangu is trying hard to reach it. Twelve hours later the taste and smell still linger on the breath. For the main course, the Lechon Asado with onions was pretty good, but the sauce on the new shrimp dish (I can't recall the name, but it is fried shrimp with some kind of orange sauce) was WAY too sweet.
Service was courteous, attentive and quick. However, this food is not to my liking and a definitely on the pricey side. I will not be back, and I do NOT recommend this restaurant.
Anything but authentic Dominican cuisine. – If you do not know what Dominican food is supposed to taste like, then you may be compelled to write a 5 stars review about this place. However, being born and raised in the Dominican Republic, I know what our food is supposed to taste like, and what I ate at this place tonight did not look (nor it tasted) Dominican at all.
I ordered the "Azopao de Camarones", and I can tell you that this looked more like a soup with rice in it, in addition to shrimp. I complained to several people in the restaurant, but they did not have a clue about what authentic Dominican food was supposed to be. I could not finish the soup, but still wanting to try something ?Dominican? (since in the area where I live there are no Dominican restaurants), I ventured to order the "Arroz con Pollo". Much to my surprise this looked more like "Azopao de Pollo", than what I actually ordered.
I finally complained to the owner of the restaurant. He indicated that he is aware of the difference between authentic Dominican food, and what he serves at his place. He said that his target market is not Dominican. He went further to indicate that what he eats at home is entirely different. At the very minimum I would have appreciated an apology, and maybe offering me a discount (which I would have probably politely rejected, as a heartfelt apology would have been more than enough) as a token of his appreciation for my feedback. But not even that. Oh well, I guess not all Dominicans are created equal.
What upsets me the most is that I called the restaurant prior to driving over there. I identified myself as a Dominican looking for Dominican food, and a lady who answered the phone reassured me that they were the real deal. Well, they are not. Oh, I almost forgot: I also ordered a coffee for my wife. Fortunately that never arrived.
Incredible food. Excellent service! – All I can say about this restaurant is that if you do not visit and lOVE the food, see a dr because something is wrong with you.
My husband and I decided to go out on a limb on one of our rare date nights and try something new. We had never been and were taken aback when we started our walk through the beautiful greenery hiding this beautiful restaurant to the front door. We were greeted by friendly faces and seated immediately in front of delicious homemade plantain chips with a flavorful and intense carribean dipping sauce. My husband and I both ordered drinks and I was floored by his Mexican Martini served in the shaker , he ended up filling his martini glass 4 times for only 7.95. ---------
Lets get on to the order:--------
Appetizer: Tostones & Longaniza (breaded fried plantain & homemade sausage) - Very hearty amount of food. Delicious homemade sausage unlike any sausage you will ever. Full of chunky pork peiced served once again with that delicious carribean dipping sauce. 6.75---------
I had the Mahi Mahi with a homemade Mango salsa. Summery, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. The fish was the perfect size, not to big, not to small. Very meaty, cooked to perfection. The Mango salsa paired perfecly. All entrees come with 3 VERY LARGE sides of your choice. I ordered the plain black beans, very flavorful - Arroz Congri - rice cooked with black beans, garlic and pork , this was pretty much a dish all its own and the Classic Fried plantain which was one of the best fried plantains I have ever had. 14.95-----------
My husband had a Shrimp dish which is new to the menu and I cannot remember what it is called. It was sweet and absolutely sinful. He ordered sides just as I did with exception of the rice, he ordered the Arroz Blanco which is a classic flavorful carribean white rice. 14.95----------
By the time we finished eating the HUGE portions we were too stuffed for dessert. Some other time and there WILL be another time.
