Walked Out – Went there pre-theater tonight with my mother early at 5:45 with a reservation. It was fairly empty. When we ordered my mother asked for no crouton in her onion soup (she hates parmesan). The waitress said "no substitutions". We said we just want to leave something OUT not substitute. She said the chef would not deviate from the menu which meant I couldn't have chicken instead of veal prepared in a dish or onions left off my salad (I'm allergic). When we called over a manager, she was completely unapologetic and arrogant. She said "We don't make substitutions". We said, "you don't mind if we leave then..." and left. Rude and poor customer service to say the very least.

not good for group parties – i called to make a reservation for a group of 15. i was told to call someone on their cell phone to reserve the space since it's a big group. i did and the guy laughed at me when i asked if it'd be possible to get a private room. ok, fine.

i asked if i can bring a cake for the birthday guest and he say it's going to be $5 per slice. i'm not paying $75 on top of the cost of the cake!!! i know some restaurants charge a service fee for every slice of cake, but i know most restaurants are happy to accomodate you for free. regardless, i read some iffy comments about the place to begin with and i thought i'd try anyway, but after talking with the guy, i decided to look elsewhere to have the party.

A Major Disappointment – You expect that there will be variables in other's experiences of a restaurant. But, the Scarlatto that we dined at on August 2, 2007 bears no resemblance to any of the reviews described herein. The food and service were simply horrible!!!

We are frequent theatre-goers and honestly appreciate the challenge that a pre-theatre restaurant faces, but the food and service that evening was inexcusable.

We were looking forward to dining at this restaurant after reading such glowing reviews. We went there to celebrate our daughter's 30th birthday, and then to the theatre. The maitre d' had been informed of the occasion. There was more than ample time to serve us; to have a leisure dinner with the traditional burning birthday candle dessert; and then an easy walk to the theatre. It didn't happen that way.

We were fine up through the appetizers - they were all acceptable. But, then the restaurant inability to serve and manage well began to show. Our empty appetizer plates remained on our table for twenty minutes until I asked a passing busboy to please remove them. We walked into the restaurant at 6:00 PM, placed our orders at 6:30 PM. By 7:15 our entrees still had not arrived - 45 minutes after the fact. During that time our waiter passed our table several times, noticing the situation but never addressing it. I finally had no choice except to get up from the table, find our waiter, and inform him that if we didn't get served soon, we would not only not have insufficient time to finish our dinners, but we would be late for the theatre - that had the maitre d' step into the situation and the food finally arrived giving us less than 20 minutes to complete our meals. When it did arrive, the fish entrees were dried out and poorly prepared; my linguine con vongole - less than average. There was neither time for coffee nor that lit candle to celebrate a 30th birthday. We rushed off to theatre with five minutes remaining. A restaurant and a dinner never to be had again.

Perfect Pre-Theater Italian – We ate at Scarlatto on July 25th before seeing a Broadway play. The restaurant was full and it is no wonder because the food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. We were seated quickly. Drinks were so-so and the service was inconsistent with long waits between courses. Our server forgot a drink order. Breads were great. Our salads with pear and gorgonzola were tasty and well-made. Our entrees of veal saltimbocca and soft-shell crabs were first-rate. Most entrees are priced at $20 or less. We had Panna Cotta for dessert which we liked. Service issues aside, it is a wonderful place to dine.

Not just a theatre district restaurant! – It should not be considered just " a theatre district" restaurant, it is worth the trip from anywhere in or out of the city! Scarlatto's food, wine and atmosphere is outstanding. I eat out 4x a week and I have to stop myself from making it Scarlatto's each and everytime. I have never been disappointed in the food, whether I've ordered the Monk fish, lamb chops or pasta -- delicious each time. The atmosphere is cozy, inviting, yet upscale -- it would be a great choice for a get together with friends or a first date.

A restaurant that doesn't understand the meaning of the word "reservation" – If you have theater plans, avoid this theater district restuarant. I recently had a 6 PM reservation, booked through opentable, and was made to wait until 6:30 to be seated. In the theater district, where people are often eating before a show, this is completely unacceptable. To make matters worse, instead of being honest with us, the hostesses repeatedly told us our table was "just being set up." This was a blatant lie, since they had no empty tables, and two other parties ahead of us who hadn't been seated either.

The food was good, but would have been better if I didn't have to shovel it down. I would return if I was looking for a leisurely meal, but for a leisurely meal, I probably wouldn't be eating in the theater district.

Great service, great food ! – I made reservations for dinner at Scarlatto on 03/20/07 and did it on their website earlier that day. I told them that it was going to be my first time there and was bringing a date who I wanted to impress. This was also going to be my first date w/ her. Well, we got to the rest. and the very attractive rest. hostess and assistant accomodated us with what I wanted. (perfect table on the second floor where it was quieter so I can listen to my date and of course where it was more romantic.) I thank them very much......Well the food was fantastic ! The menu has numerous entrees, appertizers, etc. A wonderful selection. I had the Monk fish with a side of tortellini filled with pumpkin. It was fantastic. Very tasty. My date wasn't daring and ordered grilled chicken which the serving was huge. Although I had a little difficulty trying to understand our waiter who had this great and wonderful Italian accent, he was very helpful with choosing a great tasting red wine. He was very attentive during dinner. He was great. I thank him....There is a nice bar when u walk in to the right. The restaurant is very nicely decorated. It' s convenient to the theater district. It was a Tuesday evening and the atmosphere was great. Alot of customers on the ground floor having a great time. The feeling wasn't claustophobic. Don't know how it is on the weekend. But regardless, with the superb staff I'm sure they won't disappoint. They were quick with serving our food. Didn't have to wait long. The price for dinner and wine wasn't expensive. It was worth every penny. I will definetly return to this restaurant. No doubt about it. And soon too ! .............

Thank you again,

George

Amazing pasta selection and romantic upscale ambience – I recently took my boyfriend here for his birthday after hearing about this place from other couples. It's dimly lit inside which makes it incredibly romantic and upscale. I was so impressed by the pasta selection and wanted to try all of it! We ordered the potato gnocchi (amazing) and I got the pollo milanese which was so refreshing. My boyfriend is a bit of a thinly-sliced-chicken-parmesan connoisseur and he wasn't in love with his piece since it was verging on medium thickness, but I thought it was delicious. The pumpkin ravioli and macaroni and cheese looked great as well. I'd definitely go back!

Great Italian food at Scarlatto's, great service, Broadway theater location, highly recommended – I recently had a corporate event at Scarlatto's in early Dec. We had 30 people and were assigned to the 2nd floor, which we had to ourselves. The room up there is narrow and can easily accommodate that number of guests. The room is decorated very nicely and the temperature is climate controlled so it was very comfortable. Of course, I wouldn't have wanted to knock over a glass because there might have been a domino affect down the long narrow table... ; P

Anyway, more importantly, I found this restaurant while searching the web, and got there because I couldn't secure a group in Carmines. I was NOT disappointed. The pricing was fair and the food was wonderful. I had read that the chef 'broke the code' on spaghetti and meatballs so I gave it a shot. Given my italian heritage, I have never ever ordered this dish at a restaurant. I can tell you that the chef has, indeed, mastered this basic dish. It was quite tasty! In fact, everyone was quite pleased with their meals and I received no complaints. Wine and Beer was part of our package and it all went down very well.

Of additional importance was the service. I rate the service very highly. Considering the number of people we had and the amounts of food and drink consumed, Scarlatto was appropriately prepared and we had 3 to 4 waiters at our beck and call. They handled our group professionally and pleasantly.

I have since returned for dinner with a group of 4, and everything was consistent including the service.

Anyone with complaints about the service must keep in mind that the theatre crowd can be demanding in terms of timing and quickness. They typically must complete their meal quickly in order to avoid missing a show. If you're not in a rush, the restaurant is great, and if you are, they move you out as quickly as possible.

The prix fix lunch is truly a value in NYC. Anyone visiting on a budget should make use of it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Great pasta for the price! – I'm glad this isn't as popular as it should, because i would hate to see them jack their prices and their quality go down. You're getting homemade italian food at such reasonable prices, that i feel bad for people that goes to the olive garden, which is overpriced fast food italian up the block.

I forget what i ordered, but i've been there a couple of times and taken out from there. Everything i've had was good. Def. go there!
