Horrible Doctor.. – The dentist office is nice, the receptionist is really friendly, that is where the buck end. I was there to get an wisdom tooth extraction and the Dentist was very COLD and rushed. He stabbed my gums with the numbing medicine, then it felt like he took pliers and pulled out my wisdom tooth. This all happened in a room with just me and him no dental assistant. Then when the "procedure" was over the assistant came in and he talked at her. Then mumbled under his breath when she didn't answer. He was very disrespecful to his assistant who just asked simple basic questions. I would never go back to this dentist and I will never recommend him either.
Terrible Oral Surgeon no bedside manner! – I went to Dr. Guthrie at 1556 S Michigan Ave for a wisdom tooth extraction. On the first visit Dr. Guthrie recommended I get three removed which was inline with what my dentist suggested. However, I was only in a position to have one removed at this visit. Before I was even allowed to see the Dr. I had to pay $257.00. When I explained that I was afraid because I had never had a tooth extracted and would like to be put to sleep he lost his patience with me. The dentist never removed my tooth, he basically kicked me out and didn't refund my money. He mad an appointment for me to come back the following week when he would remove all 3 and put me to sleep. The next week he was upset with me for not having a ride there with me. Forgive me for only having a six year old and a friend who lived down the street and was able to pick me up and not wait. I paid to be asleep and wasn't asleep, when he shot me in the mouth I said ouch and he said "oh just go back to sleep" I was never asleep in the first place. When it was all done, he was ready to kick me out. He said "it's lunch time" and I said ok let me call my ride. This is when he got upset and said "that's now how we do things around here" So I called my ride back to tell him that they were kicking me out. I told the dentist I would happily wait outside for my ride who by the way was down the street. Dr. Guthrie then said no you may fall down. I was upset and said this is obviously not a concern of yours as you are kicking me out. He wasn't very gentle and I fell like $527 was way too much to extract 3 teeth. I am reporting him as soon as I find out the right vehicle to go through. I don't think he should be allowed to pull teeth.
Where's the follow up or customer service? -- felt overcharged – While getting a dental exam from my primary dentist, she noticed a sore on my tongue. I explained to her I bit my tongue a few weeks ago, but I think it had healed and I felt fine. She recommended I see an oral surgeon - just in case. She gave me two recommendations. I decided to visit the closest one. I went to Michael Guthrie's office on 1556 S. Michigan. He was very nice but our meeting was very brief. He looked at my tongue for maybe a minute and spoke to me for a few minutes letting me know it's fine. This is after waiting in the lobby for 45 minutes. After my five minutes with the doctor, I went to the billing dept. and received a bill for $309. Afterwards, I called my dentist to see if this seemed high and she said yes. I called back and was told that $309 is their minimum and the rates are regulated and inline versus other oral surgeons. I decided to call the other recommended oral surgeon and found out their minimum was only $55. When I explained what happened to me, the other oral surgeon's office shared that their minimum price seemed very high. Recently, I left two messages with the billing dept and Michael Guthrie to get further clarification. I was told I would be getting a call back shortly. It's been over two weeks and I still haven't received a call. I am in no position to judge the quality of Dr. Guthrie's work. However, if the customer service/patient follow up is any reflection of his practice, I would be concerned.
