Not like the original – The one in New York was always so good and cozy yet sophisticated. The portions are too big. Garlic prevails throughout the room and the staff are all too gruff. We also had to wait over a half hour for our reservation.
Stately digs and Italian classics set the stage for romance – Liked an oversized heirloom cocktail ring, this Italian restaurant--sibling to the original New York outpost--is a statuesque beauty in a sea of bland high rises. With parlor-like rooms fashioned with hutches, crown molding and glistening chandeliers, the old Biggs Mansion gets a new lease on life every night. From the moment napkins are placed into laps, teams of servers attend to every detail. One captain could be filling a wine glass, another plating that perfect serving of garlicky langostino and spinach. Moneyed denizens get pampered with the standards: a signature slow-cooked, wine-soaked osso bucco, toothsome housemade pasta and light, silky amaretto cheesecake.
Best Private Event Ever! – My best friend had her wedding reception at Il Mulino, and I have never seen anything like it! The classic decor made for the perfect romantic atmosphere. And on top of that, the food was outstanding. We had the lamb, and it was the most succulent lamb I?ve ever had. Everyone who worked there was so nice and accommodating. I highly recommend them!!!
Great little Italian place – I've been to Il Mulino now three or four times. We have not had any problems with the food, nor the service. It is a more relaxed atmosphere, but they start you off with a lot of food immediately after being sat down so you don't starve while making food selections, etc. Their menu is HUGE, and there is a lot to look over. I've brought my parents here last time they came to visit-and my father is so in love with it, we had to go again two nights later. (he's very Italian from long island, and when he finds a restaurant he likes, he talks about it constantly...like an Italian would) At the end of your meal, you are served a complimentary shot of house infused grappa. Very good.
Expect it to be a longer dinner, and expensive. If you like to not be rushed, this is your place. It can be loud at times, but the mansion it is in is quite beautiful, so you have to forgive the acoustics.
Amazing service!!!Lovely bartender!!! – I love IL mulino for many reasons like:
Customer service is 5 star ...the location is amazing, as i said the bartender Adrien ( i think this is his name ) is very professional . I've had the best Mojito ever with brown sugar..wow ..so they know how to please a customer. Overall experience it's amazing. The variety of wines that they have it is huge. See if other restaurants can compete. I think not.. Not to mention about all those great things that you receive complimentary including limoncello. Please give it a try and you will not be sorry.
Great private rooms! If you want to impress... – I have had the opportunity to experience the Il Mulino in Chicago on many occasions. My boss is in love with the restaurant and has all of our business meetings in the private rooms of the 2nd floor. We have also had numerous dinners on the main floor of the restaurant. What one of the best things about Il Mulino is that you get the exact same (although somewhat lengthy) experience whether you are dining in the restaurant or in a private room.
We are often entertaining clients from out of town and this is definitely the place to do it well! Every time we have an event the clients can't stop gushing about the beautiful mansion, great food, and attentive service. I agree that if you are on a romantic date the service can be a bit overbearing; but if you looking to impress and want to be treated like a VIP then this is the place!
I would never hesitate to do business at Il Mulino. I suppose dining on my company's dime isn't so bad either!
Below Par – We went for dinner and had reservations - they took us right at 8:30 and gave us a great complimentary bruschetta which was truly the best we have ever eaten. The complimentary plate of salami and fried Zucchini was really good as well (the zucchini was a bit oilier than I'd prefer but very tasty). We got the wine menu very quickly but it took forever to get the food menu and order. I'm not sure if that's their style so that you do not feel pressured. When we finally did, we ordered a bottle of wine and shared an appetizer of fried Calamari which was very good. For dinner, my boyfriend ordered Fettucini Alfredo and I ordered the Canneloni. The Canneloni was ok - I've had better but the fettucini alfredo was terrible. The sauce was goopy and tasted like it came out of a bottle (actually the stuff out of a bottle is better than what we had). The noodles were cooked under al dente -- they were just plain hard. The waiter never came by during our meal to ask how everything was - which was surprising. Finally at the end of the meal, he did. We're not complainers but had to say something to the waiter as to why he didn't eat his food. They took his meal off and gave us complimentary dessert (the mascarpone cheesecake is truly wonderful) and their homemade limoncello (which was excellent). I have no idea if we just ordered the wrong thing but how can they screw up Fettucini Alfredo???? We're not sure if we"ll give this one another try or not.
Real Italian Food – My new favorite Chicago Restaurant. Marco the Captain and Tinet the bartender were fantastic. We literaly encountered great service from almost every server in the restaurant, including the new Manager.
This place makes you feel as if you are in Italy. Sure the food at Merlo is very good, but Merlo forgot long ago what makes service in Italy memorable. Il Mulino will make you any combination of a meal you want, just like being in Florence or Bologna. I cannot imagine not liking any dish they offer. I could however be happy enough with the antipasti and a fine Italian Red Wine.
We were never rushed. In fact the waiter invited us to stay seated after our dinner until space was available at the bar for an after dinner drink. Everyone here works as a team. Fred and Tinet both prepared a clean table in the lounge for us, and Fred brought us our dinner bill to the bar and ordered us one last drink.
I amnot sure that there is any bad table in the whole place. Just the best dinner experience we ever have had. Be prepared for a dining event.
Thanks to Fred, Marco, and Tinet (spelling?) for a great evening.
Just like New York...But different – Went to Il Mulino in Chicago last week when I was visiting. I am from NY and have been to the Il Mulino in the Village so I wanted to try this one out. The food was as I expected - terrific, but the service was different. The uniforms were the same and the little stuff at the beginnig was the same, but the pace was different somehow. Less rushed, less hectic. The staff was not as polished as NY, but nicer to me. I guess its the Chicago influence. And what a building!! The decor was so dramatically different form NY. This is such a beautiful space. Great job all around. I'll definately be back next time I'm in town.
Couldn't have been better. – Heard a lot of things about this restaurant. When I was invited the other day I checked it out on line and the reviews were all over the place. Well, when we were there it was amaaazing!! I don't hink I've EVER had a dinner like that before. The stuff that they give you to start was great and the pasta we had was terrific. They even finish cooking it in the dining room for you right before you eat it. I read that the staff is rude, but they couldn't have been nicer to us. My chicken dish was terrific and my friends veal was really good too. We shared a dessert with a little bit of everything in it and by the end we were stuffed and happy. This is really a unique place and I will definitely be back.
