At Blaue Gans Same Night - Their Child Was Terrible! – Regarding the two reviews below: I was a diner at The Blaue Gans that evening and I specifically remember this table. Their child was screaming across the whole restaurant while everyone was trying to enjoy their lovely meal. You know you are a poor diner and parent when the management and owner has to tell your child to behave themselves in the restaurant. The manager was not out of place. Even if a customer has spent over $1000s at the place, as I have, one should never feel entitled in such a way. Besides these rude customers I found my meal beautiful and the waitstaff knowledgeable and patient. The food was delicious and I will be returning!
Spent $1000s there, then treated like dirt. – After trying to quiet and sleepy child, exhausted from the long wait to order, and then the long wait for food, a rude hostess snapped at us. When we asked to speak to the owner he was even more insulting, then ran off cowardly.
After having countless meals there before, I was shocked and insulted. Yes, an upset child is annoying, but we did not act rude to the waiter when we complained about the slow service.
As a born and bred New Yorker, I'm thrilled that there are so many other superior places to eat nearby. I recommend many other restaurants on that same street - Upstairs At Bouley, City Hall, Duane Park and Max - they actually serve great food and take a moment to treat customers respectfully and with understanding.
I was shocked by the owner's rudeness and sloooow service. – I was amazed by the owner's and management's rudeness. The owner was nasty then walked away and wouldn't even let us respond. I pity the staff who work there.
In times like this, who needs to pay top dollar for mediocre food served in an unpleasant environment, especially when there are so many wonderful and welcoming restaurants just steps away.
Wonderful atmosphere, food, and service – We visited the Blaue Gans last week and were pleasantly surprised (due to some not so great previous reviews). We all found the food great, the service great and the atmosphere was wonderful. The Scottish Salmon was perfect for me. Everyone at our table enjoyed their dinner. The artichokes on the appetizer menu were our favorites. The lollipops were a real surprise and we all enjoyed them. The evening couldn't have been better.
Fantastic breakfasts and delicious dinners – Frankly I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews. I live in Tribeca and eat at Blaue Gans regularly - usually once a week, sometimes twice a day! - the breakfasts are just terrific, excellent coffee, perfect pastries and a lovely quiet atmosphere (maybe I shouldn't tell y'all, it'll get noisy!) Dinners are much livlier, with a long communal table down the centre of the restaurant and booths on the side. We eat the schnitzl all the time, and dabble in other foods too. It's average for tribeca, so on the expensive side but not ridiculous. I'd be happy taking anyone there, it's classy without a hint of pretension, good service, good wines, great food - what more could you want?!
Management: please lose the lousy tables! – The food at Blaue Gans is tasty and innovative. Venison goulash arrived in a lush sauce with hints of sweetness, the spaetzle was creamy and light, and the pistachio ice cream was aromatic and set off the richness of the chocolate mousse beautifully.
But I am very surprised that a restaurant this good and this professional has kept a particularly bad table as part of the room's setup. When facing the back of the room, there is a two top just to the right of the entry to the kitchens and restrooms. It's not only that the view from the table is nearly into the kitchen, but that the chair is inevitably knocked by servers and patrons at the neighboring tables. I realize that in small rooms one can get bumped into, but this was especially bad--the night I was there, both parties seated there asked to move, and even the server acknowledged that the table was in a bad location. Why not lose this 2-top and make the neighboring corner table a four-top? A good restaurant with a snazzy interior and high-ish prices shouldn't have such an awkward and uncomfortable arrangement. I'd give the restaurant more stars if it weren't for this table. I'd love to go back as long as I knew I wouldn't have to sit there.
Blaue Gans = bland, beige, overpriced food – Admittedly, I am not a fan of Austrian/Bavarian food, so that certainly affected my experience at this SoHo spot. Even so, this place was very disappointing. The only thing that was close to edible was the purple pickled cabbage came and that's not saying much. While the decor, with all the cool posters, was fun & enjoyable, the beige starchy food was hardly appetizing. For the price, you're better off buying yourself a beer and heading somewhere else.
Nice, conversational restaurant – I go to restaurants by old school, working class rules:
One-- The dining area should be nice, well lit and open with space to walk.
Two-- The food should come timely
Three-- You and your friends should be able to sit and talk without being hovered over.
Four-- The staff should helpfully explain unknown menu items to help you decide.
Those Four requirements were met for me.
The menu selections are German/Austrian-- but this is 2007 not 1960. You are in 21st century Tribeca, not 'Turn of the Century' Lower East Side. There will be no Gut-Buster platters heaped with all the greasy schnitzel you can eat. You're NOT in Brooklyn. You're NOT in Staten Island. You are NOT in Munich.
The portions are what I would call "Manhattan Light". Between the Appetizers, the Entree and the dessert, a reasonable Man will be satisfied. A Woman, of course, will eat much less- but the portions will fill her very nicely without too much left on the plate. If I want to pork myself into semi-consciousness, I'll stay home and put 5 pounds of ribs in the oven.
I had the venison, medium rare, and it was tender and crisp on the outside without being burned. My friends had the the jager and the pork Schnitzel which was tasty, but the meat portions were thinner than what they had been imagining (we're all big guys)-- although the waiter had warned us. Still, it was all tasty-- and the spaetzl dishes were tasteful and delicious.
Last-- I dine out for the pleasure of being served something I cannot cook myself and NOT having to do the dishes. I will pay for that privilege gladly because I eat out with friends seldomly. Go on-line and look at the menu prices and figure your budget before you go instead of crying about it afterwards. I suggest reservations also. If your budget is tight-- leave off the wine and beer--You can do that when you get back home anyway.
Don't go for the Schweinebraten - it's a fat and cheap Schweinebauch – We went there last night and the Schweinebraten (roasted pork) is a cheap and fat Schweinebauch (pork belly). I would not recommend the place. After asking the maitre for the chef there was no response and no interest.
Not Recommended – My wife and I went to Blaue Gans for Valentine's Day. We ordered off their six course V-Day prie-fixe menu. I understand it's a tasting menu, but the portions were ridiculously small. The entrees were not good. My wife's poisson was undercooked and my braised beef was about the size of the foie gras appetizer brought out initially (which was about the size of a small Post It pad). After the entree, they brought us each a chocolate lollipop. What they didn't tell us was that it wasn't an actual lollipop, but a ball of fried dough with chocolate sauce inside (which they should have told us beforehand). Thinking it was a lollipop (and solid), I took a bite and proceeded to spill chocolate sauce all over my pants. It was the perfect ending to the night :)
Overpriced and mediocre is not a winning combination. Tribeca has several great restaurants and this is not one of them. I wouldn't go back and we wouldn't recommend it.
