Love it – The best way to describe Masala Wok to someone who has never heard of it is that it's Pei Wei for Indian food.

I like that I can order my spinach masala with paneer (their version of saag paneer) without naan and save a couple of bucks.

For any single ladies out there: This is a great place to come if you want to meet a guy. OK, here's what I'm thinking. Every time I come here with my work friends, we're the only girls in here. It's FULL of guys in polos and kahkis with ID badges hanging from their belts. Based on the neighborhood, these are most likely tech and energy sector guys from all over the Westchase district. So these will be guys who you know have a job, and tech/energy jobs typically pay well. You're welcome ladies, happy hunting.

delicious! – Great Indian food that is fast (not fast food!!). The chicken 65, lamb biryani and the chicken tikka masala are great of course. Also, the garlic naan is delicious.

Good Indian food – Affordable and very nicely done Indian food. They have a limited menu, but they seem to know what they're best at. Good prompt service. Never crowded. However, spicy here does NOT mean spicy if you're Indian and grew up with some whole-bodied spices in everything from your yogurt to your chicken. You can ask for the food to be made more spicy though. Barely ever have been disappointed with this place.

Go for the Chicken Tiki Masala – Excellent cheap Indian food. Entrees are in the $10 range. The Chicken Tiki Masala is awesome - the first time you go, be sure to order that. Casual, family-friendly dining.

A note about the spiciness of the food:

When I went in early 2008, I ordered medium spicy on the Chicken Tiki Masala. My lunch companions, who had eaten here before, ordered Hot Spicy, explaining: "The medium is actually mild". The medium was NOT mild, and the hot...well, let's just say I had a good laugh at my friends expense. In Jan 2009, the medium was a little spicy, but nothing like it was in 2008 - next time, I'll probably order hot.

The spiciness also varies from dish to dish - medium on one dish may be hot on another.

My advice: order medium he first time you go, learn the dishes, and adjust the spiciness level as you return, which you will. The price/ taste just can't be beat.

Cheap & novel, but not good – Went 10/1/08 and asked for the hottest vindaloo they could do. I used the expression 'UK hot' as I grew up on Indian food in UK. It was not any hotter than some salsa. The lamb was very tough and sparse. Nice atmosphere with lots of native east Indians eating there. Friendly staff who handled a mistake well. Good rice & nan. Even though it's cheap, don't get your expectations up!

Solid Indian at good a good price – I am a self-appointed Indian food critic. Though I grew up in Kansas, I have eaten my share of Indian from various places all over the country as well as the UK. After trying several Indian places in Houston, I have to say that Masala Wok combines good food with low prices in a fun, friendly atmosphere. I have eaten here a few times and have never had "bad" service (nor really great service either). I don't expect much out of the people who work at the restaurant because it isn't full service!!! What I expect is good food and good value. Masala Wok delivers on both.

I have tried both the chicken and lamb vindaloo (better than London Sizzler, not quite as good as the Red Lion), the kabob grill, and the chicken tikka grill. The chicken tikka grill was I think my favorite, though the lamb vindaloo was a close second. While vindaloo is traditionally a very hot curry, none of the food I've had at the Masala Wok has been "too spicy". I am a chili head, and so I add some of their chili sauce to my vindaloo (which I order "hot"). The chicken tikka grill was absolutely delicous, with a big portion of marinated and grilled chicken served with tomato cream masala sauce on the side.

For starters I have tried both the Chicken 65, which is a lightly breaded and fried chicken breast chunks coated with hot indian spices. I have also tried the Samosa Chatt, which consists of two potato and pea stuffed samosas covered with chickpeas in a curry sauce with onion and yogurt. Between the two, the samosa chatt was, by far, my favorite. I haven't tried anything off the chinese side of the menu, but the items look promising.

Don't go to this restaurant expecting strictly traditional Indian food, there are other, better places in Houston for that. Don't expect top of the line service, because that is not how the business model works. Do expect very good food at good prices. Try the samosa chatt, the chicken tikka grill, and wash it down with a mango lassi.

Yummy and cheap – My husband and I go here when we want a relaxed, inexpensive dinner. The people watching can be fun, and the meals are big enough to share (I have a somewhat small appetite, though) Since the concept is similar to a Pei Wei, we don't have to worry about tip, and we don't get attitude for ordering only one entree. The service isn't fantastic, but we aren't coming for a fine dining experience. It's also a little loud, but very relaxed and tasty. I have tried something different ecah time I've come in, and all were wonderful.

Waste of money and MEDIUM SPICE = EXTREMELY SPICY! – I am an Indian and I know good Indian food...this place is just not it. I had a bad feeling when 9/10 people behind the counter were Mexicans. It's a little expensive for fast food, but the main problem we had, (me and my Texan bf), it was so SPICY we were unable to eat the food. We had to order naan to eat the red-blazing (supposedly medium spiced) biryani rice. Neither one of us is a wimp for spicy food, but this is ridiculous. We also had the Ginger Masala Shrimp that was also very spicy (ordered medium), and had no Indian taste to it at all. In the end, we left 70% of the food on the plates, with our mouths burning and sweat on our foreheads. Overall, I feel we wasted 25 bucks for 2 people in a FAST FOOD place!...the only positive was the Mango lassi.

MIL loves it – Everytime i visit this place,it is like coming in for the very first time. Besides the familiar faces of the staff and the ambience, the food is truly excellent. Though my family is not a great food lover, but they still love the tasty chicken lollipops and chicken karahi with an order of crispy hot nan. My mother-in-law is proud to see indian chefs and a cleanly maintained kitchen and believes that the best Indian food can be served only at this restaurant.

As we are relatively new to houston, I`m not too sure of the few other places around town, but i certainly give a 9/10 to masalawok. We`ll be back over and over again,at least until m-i-law is around.

Masala Wok - Good food BAD customer relations – I had seen Masala Wok a few times in passing on the way to and from work and decided to take my wife this last Saturday and see what it was all about. Below is the experience:

Food was good but would like to try other things. My wife and I had the coconut curry shrimp, samosa to start, an extra order or nan, and 2 iced teas.

While the food was good the customer service was horrible. We walked in and there was a young guy behind the counter that just looked at us like we were bothering him by coming in. He didn't say 'Hi welcome..' and just looked at us blankly. After a few minutes of silence he went over to a table were there were 2 other employees all accessing a myspace page on a laptop computer. I looked at my wife and thought 'What the heck is this?'. So after a few minutes of them all intently looking at someone's page, the guy comes back and still says nothing. We order and have a seat.

The one girl that was bringing orders to tables was even more irritated that people were in the restaurant and we were no exception. No smile, no 'here's your food'.. not a word. I tried to ask about something and she just walked off in the middle of me asking the question. As soon as she brought us our order she was back at the myspace table. It was quite obvious they didn't want to be there. I even watched another family tell her that their food was 'not spicy like last time' and this girl (almost against here will it seemed) listened and took the food to the chef and told him to 'make it spicy'.

SUMMARY:

My wife and I will never go to this place again. If the manager reads this review, if you want people like my wife and I to become repeat customers, you need to hire quality staff. This experience ruined it for us. Go to a traditional Indian place instead.
