Warning - Worst service – 364 days after placing and pre-paying for an order of shirts, I heard from management that Bermini no longer makes shirts, just suits. Months after my April 2007 order, I even dropped off a custom made shirt that Bermini had previously made since they claimed they were having difficulties (yes, I was a repeat customer giving them the benefit of the doubt since I was satisified with them before this experience). After continued empty excuses and complete misrepresentations made by management regarding when the order would be ready, I demanded a refund. The only positive aspect was that they actually did reimburse me the amount I paid. In my final contact with Bermini on April 3, 2008, I was informed via email "...effective tomorrow, are discontinuing our shirt line. We will only focus on suits."
I strongly suggest avoiding this business.
Can't beat the price... – I ordered a pair of pants in early September ?07 with an estimated delivery time of six weeks. I finally received them in early March ?08. Only after innumerable phone calls and emails which often went unreturned, and innumerable promises that the pants would be ready next week, in early March I finally received my pants. Not the color I asked for, nor the exact details I ordered, but a fine pair of pants, in the end, for free. If you don?t mind waiting six months or so, and you don?t mind empty promises along the way, then you can?t beat the price.
Good Tailoring – Joe Hemrajani custom-makes suits, but he?s not above everyday alterations. Superb on complex jobs like resizing. A custom suit I purchased from my former tailor in Boston didn't fit quite right. After my move to NY, a colleague recommended I consult Joe. Joe was able to deepen the armhole, make the silhouette more Italian, and removed excess rolls in the back of my suit. I haven't purchased a suit from Bermini yet but have heard good things.
Make-up – As follow up to my earlier post "Horrified!":
My dress was altered and dry-cleaned in less than a week. The stain came out and the dress fit perfectly. Joe refunded my money and also offered compensation, if the store refused the return, for the dress we had to cut off. He was professional and sincere when I went to pick up my dress and refund. A nice gesture for my not-so-wonderful first time experience. Much appreciated.
I'm short $500 and I have no suit – I ordered a suit last July. I went to be measured. I ordered my material and was told to check in a couple of weeks. Two weeks later, I called to check if my suit was ready. No, I had to wait another week. Tried again in another week, Joe told me it would be ready in another day. Then one more day. I told Joe that I need the suit because I had to go to Europe in a couple of days. The suit was still not ready. I went to Europe with no suit. I emailed, text messaged and called Joe from Europe. Finally he answered, he said he would mail the finished suit to me in Europe. Still waiting. I called, text messaged and emailed Joe and now he won't return my messages. I paid a $500 deposit and I still have no suit.
Exemplary service and fantastic quality suits – I went into Bermini last night without an appointment to compare what they were offering with other tailors in NYC and came out having ordered a suit from their Italian range with a huge smile on my face. Joe and Martin are fantastic to work with, extremely knowledgeable and looking for nothing more than to make the customer happy. They showed me random examples of their work and the quality is very good. I went wearing one of my favourite suits tailored in the Netherlands and Joe, while not critiqueing it per se, explained how he would make my next suit so that it would become my new favourite. These guys are great, and I strongly recommend taking the time to talk to them about how your wear your suits, and what things you like/dislike in the suits your currently wear. The only disappointment is that I have to wait 6 weeks for my suit to arrive!
Worst tailor in NY – I can't believe these guys are actually getting good reviews. Are you kidding me!? I visited Joe and Martin of Bermini Tailors over a year ago in search of 2 suits and boy did they do a horrible job. I had to wait 6 weeks for my suits to get to NYC and when they did, they were not even close to my fit. Instead, the suits were about twice my size!!! (I thought the objective of a custom made suit is to fit you nicely from the get-go.) Martin had to remeasur me and they had to alter the suits altogether, leaving me waiting another 2 weeks. Nonetheless, my 2nd fitting did not bode well either as the suits were just way too boxy, with no shape whatsoever. By the 3rd fitting they brought some fake Italian tailor to try to correct all the atrocities that had already taken place. Yeah right!!! The 4th fitting was just as unsatisfactory as the rest. I finally got tired of commuting back and forth to their establishment and decided to cut my losses and swear to never return. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these guys. Someway, somehow they keep removing customer's negative reviews on this website, which in turn enables them to look better than they really are. Shame on citysearch for allowing them to remove customer's negative experiences. If you want a real bespoke, custom-made suit at an affordable price in NYC, give Mr. Rodrigo Balseca a call at 718-441-3614. Mr. Rodrigo owns a shop in Queens but also does home/office visits for an additional fee. His suits start at $700 - $800, his turnaround time is only a week if not less!!!, and he does all the work himself (unlike these guys) at his shop. He also has plenty of quality fabrics to chose from.
Best Tailoring Without Question – I have used them for years and agree that they were overwhelmed for a period and things were not done on time at all. Joe is a good guy and I know he has tried to do his best to correct things. When you do get the suits back you will realize they are the best tailored suits you can get in the city.
HORRIBLE – My experience with Bermini was absolutely horrible. I was told my order would be delivered in about 6 weeks. After about eight weeks I called and they told me the order had been lost and several other lame excuses. I had a lot of patience in the beginning, but soon realised I was only being fed lies and things I wanted to hear. The whole things just got worse and worse, and it took me about 9 months to get my money back. The whole thing was just extraordinarly unprofessional. This is not a high quality tailor in any way, shape of form. The whole operation is in my opinion a complete scam, they have a nice looking web page, but that is all it is. The moment I stepped inside the office I felt something was wrong (incompetent fitters, horrible officespace, fitters wearing very ugly suits etc), and I should have walked away right then. I also asked them about the "best NY tailor award" and got some explanation that just didn't make any sense. These people are just wasting peoples time, and creating a lot of frustration. And all these poor excuses you see after every bad review is just another example how bad it is. You get the impression from the responses, and their website, that this is a large professional operation, but the truth is that they are just a couple of incompetent people working there. A normal business would of course not recieve this many complaints, so something is obviously very wrong. I cant see how anyone actually could have anything good to say about Bermini, and I would not be suprised the least if they wrote the good reviews themselves. Take your business elsewhere and save yourself the headache.
Definitely NOT recommended! – I went to Bermini in December after finding good reviews on Citysearch. I ordered 1 suit and 1 shirt to start. I waited about 6 weeks without hearing anything from Bermini. I started to call and leave messages and did not receive any response. I finally did get someone on the phone in mid-May and they told me that they didn't even have my order. I faxed over the receipt showing that I paid in full for the item in December and they said they would investigate and get back to me. I never received a return call. Ultimately, I contacted my credit card company and they provided me with a credit for the order and are currently working with the business to get their money back.
