r-love – I've been here several times and have always been completely satisfied. The bartenders are fantastic and are exremely knowledgeable about the drinks--I reccommend trying the sake they often have themselves infused with fruit--quite tasty! As for the sushi--party in my mouth. Best I have ever had, and that's quite a bit for myself. All in all, I'd have to say that combined with the atmosphere and variety offered, this is not just my favorite sushi place, but my favorite restaurant/bar in the city!
Excellent Unique Sushi – This place serves outstanding sushi. My only complaint is some of their sushi specials are HUGE (size of the sushi, not the serving)! Everything is priced moderately well. The drinks were OK, not really too strong. Overall it was a great restaurant and we really enjoyed ourselves!
Great Sushi & Ambience – First and foremost, the food is excellent. I most recently tried the "Green River" special, which was a spicy tuna and crab creation with a grean tea sauce...instant foodgasm! Everything I've ever eaten at Raw was excellent. The ambience is somewhat sultry, and with a narrow, trendy Manhattan-type feel. The only drawbacks are the upper level seating where you're practically sitting with you neighbor, and that the bar is too close to the booths behind it...basically your bumm is practically in the faces of the boothees (I think narrow tables may have been a better choice here, save the booths for the back area).
But, it's a small price to pay for everything else Raw has to offer, and I'll be back again and again!!
Great Food, Great Waitress, TERRIBLE HOST – I used to frequent Raw, eating there atleast twice a month spending over $200 each time. Now I will NEVER go back again.
Last time I was there with 5 other girls, they booked their reservations to closely and in the middle of us eating the host came over to our table and asked us how everything was because the next table was getting ?antsy?. Then he proceeded to let the next table know that they were waiting for us to get up and allowed them to come back to our table and harass us!! The man cursed at us and yelled and NO ONE from the restaurant came over to stop him.
Afterwards the manager walked over and apologized, but said she was told by the host that when we called to say we would be late that we must finish by 10PM. The host was completely lying because we were on time for the reservation and no one called him.
This was a disgusting display of management and professionalism and I will be taking my business else ware in the future.
I love this place. The presentation is beautiful. The sushi servings ample. The sake delicious. Every time I have gone there, the food was excellent. The original sushi rolls were decadent. The service was great all but once. Avoid the blonde waitress. Usually the sushi is on your table before you can close your menu (when not too busy). But that fateful night, it took 30 minutes for our drinks, and 90 minutes for appetizers. Not the chefs' or food runners' faults either. This particular waitress treated her tables as second-rate citizens. Very coarse individual. That is not a good representation of the restaurant as a whole. As an entity, the restaurant is a wonderful clash between retro american and asian stylings, with wonderful food to match. Always had a great time. Wonderful place for the first date. The menu provides many ice breakers, and the ambience is eclectic and relaxed.
I had loved this place but unfortunately last time I was there we had insects, yes insects crawling in our sushi- now they were very accomadating and polite and I don't blame management at all- of course everything was free, but kind of turned off from sushi in general for a little while. I feel bad because I like their food, but insects- that is a little rough. I may eventually try this place again, because every place deserves at least one mistake.
Best Sushi spot in Philadelphia... – I have been to Raw a few times and 2 of the times were on dates. The sushi and ambience are great I would recommend checking this place out. It does get busy if you do not have a reservation but there were seats at the bar available which kept things casual and gave us better choices of drinks.
great atmosphere but... – the ambiance is terrific. the interior designer should be proud. we sat on the raised portion at a table nuzzled closely to our neighbors (so we heard most of their conversations) but the service was attentive and the chair/booth-side both comfortable. Gladiator playing on the flat-panel TV was a bit odd but since I could glance up and catch a fight scene, I won't complain. The roll (trifena I think) we ordered was on the expensive side ($18) but it was delicious. of the sushi/sashimi we ordered, only the salmon was on par with our favorite Delaware spot (Jasmine on 202). The yellowtail was disappointing and the toro (m.p. $10 for sashimi) was downright sub-par. best toro I've ever had was at Jasmine. best yellowtail I've ever had was at a place next to Genaurdi's in Lower Gwynned, PA (who's former owner is now at Miraku on Spruce). We also ordrered one of the cooked apps on special and it was a bit overdone. Bottom line, I'd go again, but it wasn't as outstanding as I'd hoped based on the other reviews. And if you're going to serve toro, I think it's a sin to have it be sub-par. Just don't offer it if it's not going to be outstanding.
Raw is great! – I went to Raw on a suggestion from a friend. I'm new to the city and I've been trying to find a great sushi restaurant. I've been to two others and Raw definitely is the best. The decor is modern, inviting and calm and it has a candle-lit feel. The music playing was what my friends like to call "emo" (short for emotional)... while I was there I heard Keane, the Fray, and Bloc Party... all great in my book. I ordered two rolls, one of which was a specialty roll. Both were very yummy, super fresh, and 8-cut. I also ordered edamame, the portion size was on the larger side. Definitely enough for two. I had only water to drink so I cannot comment on the cocktail/wine/sake selection. I left paying under $35 for dinner.
Fabulous for lunch too – I've had dinner several times at Raw and was ALWAYS very pleased w/ the service, food, seating, etc. Lately, I've been calling in a take-out lunch order and like dinner, their lunch offerings are fabulous. For the quality and quantity, it's a fair-priced lunch, and probably a wiser choice considering the lunch offerings in the vicinity. The food is fresh and every sushi selection is ample and comes with miso soup. My orders are always ready in under 10 mins. and well packed. Don't overlook this place for lunch!
