Tomoko Style – Tomoko's sense of style is excellent. She really made my less than stellar head of hair actually look good. Immediately following my hair cut everybody I work with complimented me on it. Until I got my hair cut by her, I never knew the difference between a good hair cut and an absolutely excellent one.
Best Haircut Ever – I have been a victim of poor haircuts my whole life. I would always tell the stylist, please not to short in the back because it will stick up for a week unless I use mud to keep it down. I also let them know about the other problems. Finally, I found Nao at Tomoko Shimas Hair Salon and she gave me a fantastic cut. I have been using her for 6 months now and can't say enough. My hair has never behaved better. The price is right and the service is GREAT!!!!!
I love Nao's haircuts – I've been Nao's steady customer for months and I think she is wonderful hairstylist.
I have to schlep all the way across town just to get to that salon, I don't mind.
I always been satisfied the way I look after she does my hair, never had an issue.
I can not believe some of the negative remarks that some people wrote.. Suppose it's easy to slip into negativity especially if one is a neurotic New Yorker from UES...
I know Nao as an exceptional hair stylist, gentle and very caring. The rates she charges are also very reasonable for the City, if like to pay less go to Astor Place but then you’re going to look like a “shorn sheep”.
Not the best and too expensive – After searching for a new hair stylist and reading all the reviews about NAO I decided to take the plunge and try her out. She gave me too many layers.
I was very disappointed. I also didn't feel they should have a sign there to request a 20 percent tip. If you are happy with your services you will be happy to do so but that should be up to the client.
I will NEVER go back there. I went out of my way to go to the UES to try her and it was all very disappointing , waste of my time and money .
I have now found a great hairstylist for half the price .
Worst hair cut of my life! – In a nutshell: I received the worst hair cut ever.
After reading all of the great reviews, I decided to give this place a shot since I am new to the UES. My appointment was with Nao, and I was the only client in the salon. When she asked what I wanted, I was very specific and did not ask for anything difficult. I basically have very long, straight hair (which went half-way down my back) and I simply wanted some long layers put in--all layers were to be past my shoulders. Simple enough, right? Wrong. Nao gave me choppy, uneven layers, and a mullet (short in the front and sides, long in the back.) Apparently she does not understand the meaning of 'nothing shorter than my shoulders', as nearly have of my hair was chopped off above my shoulders, and many uneven layers were as short as my jaw line.
So, if you are a fan of mullets, uneven layers, and walking out with something that is hard to manage, unflattering, and completely the opposite of what you asked for, this place is for you. Otherwise, spend your hard-earned dollars somewhere else where they will actually listen to you (this place is not cheap), or screw up your hair at your own home for free (you surely will not do a worse job than Nao...)
Nao is the BEST hair stylist in my life – I'm Japanese.
Most Japanese hair stylists are skillful. but hey, Nao is totally differnent story!
She used to work for one of famous salons in Japan which every girls know(if you don't know it, you aint fashionista. I keep quiet that name for her thou). No doubt her skill is way beyond. Way way beyond!!!
She might ask you about YOU before she starts it.
*occupation (=what kind of looks you might need in office or professional world)
*how long you spend time to set your hair in the morning (=I'm not good at using hair iron. so she cut my hair to ease to do. And again, I don't spend much time to do it, especially in the mornig! so she cut my hair like "wash, blow, and ready!" style)
something like these.
Always, she gives me more than what I want.
I don't know where should I go when I go back to Japan for good...;( oh I've found "Cons". haha
Nao is tan oustanding srtist – I found Tomoko Shima Hair Salon after stopping two different woman on the street to ask them where did they get their hair done, they both had beautiful hair cuts.
I went there to a consultation with Nao and was so impress by her professionalism and knowledge that I put my hair in her hands....and I am grateful I did...this is by far the most detailed and beautiful hair cut I ever had, she spent 1 1/2 hours with me and that is without the color, which we did two days after, and again what talent she has!!!. She cut my hair to meet my taste and also my facial features, she has a very unique talent with the scissor (which by the way are amazing, imported from Japan and custom made for her).
I have had so many different hair cuts, hair colors, etc in my life, in different countries, cities, bu t this one is the first time where the hair stylist matched my needs with what would look good on me, and extremely creative at the same time.
I also like the salon itself is warm, elegant and very relaxing.
Is a treasure to have her in NYC
Best Hair Salon..... ever! – Nao is my stylist. I found her almost by accident after needing a new salon nearby. She is an artist, she only lets me out of the salon looking super fabulous. She has amazing attention to detail, understands both Japanese and western hair types, and above all is creative. She has amazing cutting skills that so many other stylist lack. She has imagination and an eye for what will work for you. Book with either stylist and you will never leave disappointed.
Great Haircut by Nao – Nao is an amazing hairstylist. I showed her a photo of the cut I wanted and it looked like the photo!! She knows how to look at your face and hair texture and tell you if she can achieve that look for you. If not, she give you the closest version. I've been going to Nao for 2 years now and I've sent all my friends and they love her too!
Sophisticated, Elegant, and Fabulous Look is Guaranteed! – I went through dozens of hair salons for the past 10 years in New York, because I couldn’t find any hairstylist who would create a great and sophisticated look and give me my own identity.
A friend of mine, who had a hair cut by a hairstylist Nao, had amazingly changed in terms of her looks and her image. It is true that a great haircut can define you as an individual. Afterwards, I have been going to Nao for two years.
Nao practiced in the prestigious hair salon in Tokyo, Japan, in which it is almost impossible to book an appointment. Nao works in New York now and you don’t need months to make a reservation.
She is always very punctual, professional, and really understands what her customer wants. Nao is very diverse in understanding her customers – the hair styles in her salon have no limits.
I strongly recommend for the first time clients to discuss your hair and fashion style with Nao. I brought in a photograph of how I wanted my hair to look. Nao did even a better job than on the photograph, and every time I go there she knows exactly what I want. I highly recommend Nao.
You will be extremely satisfied and gain a new look and a new set of confidence!!
Nao is AWESOME!
