overall bad experience – The change room is very small and sometimes dirty.

great teachers – i love this place, but if the classes get crowded you might get stuck behind a pillar. not a super big deal but can be annoying. the vinyasa teachers are great - try the sunday evening class. led ashtanga is a ton of fun also.

awesome studio – Let's see...I went there to take a class, and found out my first class was free! I was early, so I sat in their cozy lounge area and had a cup of tea. Class was awesome, if you have a chance check out Kevin's Vinyasa classes. Organic soaps in the showers, too!

Also, this is only studio I know of that has Iyengar, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga under the same roof, all with their separate practice rooms. Could use more Iyengar classes on the schedule, that's the only thing :) They offer many different types of class packages and memberships, something or everyone. Friendly, helpful teachers to boot. Anyway, my first experience there was fantastic, I'm there all the time now.

To be avoided – I tried out this studio a few times. I was a beginner at the time so it almost turned me off to yoga completely. The women's changing room is a joke. I don't understand why I'm forced to remove my shoes in a bathroom, gross. There were also several women walking around totally naked, which I think was unnecessary (I understand this isn't the studios fault, but anyway...)

I couldn't see what the heck the instructor was doing. There were columns blocking my view when she demonstrated, but most of the time she didn't demonstrate anyway. This was supposed to be a beginner class so naming the poses and expecting us to know them was unreasonable, in my opinion, based on the description of the class.

The instructors were less than welcoming. I got the feeling they would have preferred that beginners don't attend their classes. My friend had never taken a yoga class before and the instructor literally made fun of her and offered no help. The experienced students were unwelcoming and had an attitude towards the newbies.

After the first bad experience I decided to give it a try with a different instructor, but had a similar experience. Since then I've tried other studios and definitely had better experiences. I'm glad I didn't let this place turn me off to yoga.

a beautiful place to practice – I've been practicing ashtanga at Yoga Sutra for over two years now, and I've been to many other yoga schools in the city. Here you get experienced and knowledgeable teachers, a varied class schedule, and it's a wide open, welcoming space. The cost is well worth it for the quality of instruction and the environment - and my practice has soared. Plus everyone is pleasant and nice - the other students as well as the owner and managers, all of whom make an effort to get to know you. It's a pleasure to be a part of the community that's been created here, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. P.S., the green tea is a nice touch.

Unfortunately very expensive – It's very nice appearance wise, good flooring and large yoga rooms. Some classes get very filled and it's a bit tight to practice. They have tea but it's only free if you have an unlimited membership. Teachers are first rate. Know before you go: if you make a stink about the price they will usually throw in a free class or make some monetary adjustment.

Not worth the $$$ – This studio has excellent teachers, but it's not the most welcoming of studios. It's also incredibly expensive so be warned. There have also been numerous instances of theft of wallets and personal items (i.e. clothing) since I started practicing there, (so beware and don't leave your things unattended!). My final reservation has to do with the fact that once I left a small sack containing a bagel and other food things for lunch in the changing room. When I returned from practice the bag had been nibbled through and when I showed it to the desk they admitted they had a "rodent problem!" If you are in the area though and can overlook these shorcomings, then you may like it.

clean, intelligent, knowledgable yoga! – I have been practicing yoga for a long time, and have been to a lot of great studios in many different parts New York and the country. I have to say Yoga Sutra is a cut above all the rest. The place has so much integrity, from the quality of the teaching (definately some of the most knowledgeable, well trained teachers out there) to the design of the space - so beautiful! There is no teacher-worship-rockstar culture, a phenomenon I can't stand, just the things that matter. I can't think of anywhere else that offers THREE different styles of yoga under the same roof and manages to keep the purity of them all. The staff is warm and friendly, and the rental mats are washed after EVERY USE! I know because I asked :) Oh! the first class is FREE!

Great Midtown Yoga Studio – Yoga Sutra is a great place to both learn and practice any of 3 popular styles of hatha yoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar or Vinyasa. I have taken both Ashtanga and Vinyasa classes here and have found the teachers to be highly skilled. There are a variety of different levels practicing at this studio, beginners tthrough advanced, and I'm impressed with the patience and compassion Yoga Sutra teachers show towards those new to the practice of yoga as well as their commitment to assisting and motivating other students in achieving new breakthroughs.

I recommend Yoga Sutra as a convenient midtown studio with classes for ALL levels.

Fabulous energy, fantastic teachers – This is one of the finest yoga studio's I've ever visited, and I travel to this studio many times a week for my astanga practice. The space is beautiful, but more, the teachers are fantastic. Check out Christopher , Erika Hildebrandt, David , Michael, Zoe, Sarah, Guta, just to name a few! Ideal place for yogi beginners of all yoga traditions and committed mysore practitioners alike. They have great initial packages, are friendly, and your experience will have you going back for more!
