wide range of food, great service – I've been to Lineage twice now. The first time was when the restaurant first opened. The second time was just a few weeks ago, and oh my, they certainly worked their 'kinks' out. I promptly greeted at the door, coat checked, and sat at the bar. Friendly and knowledgeable bartender, nice cocktail list and great wines selection. I was amazed how much different, especially the menu, was since the last time I dined there.

Home-made terrines, pates, bacon, sausage and tasso hams! Along with the typical seafood as you would expect, all reasonably priced. I ended up with the Charcuterie plate. Headcheese, country pate and winter sausage. No need to travel into Boston for things like this! Perfectly bablanced with crunchy bread, mustard and pickled veggies. Entree, haddock. perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy skin. brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and homemade bacon. Great balance of the fresh sprouts, sweentess of the potatoes and crunchy smokey house cured bacon. Ending with the Butterscotch pudding..I give it an A. However, I wish there was a TV next to the beautiful wood-burning oven for the bar crowd.

New Restaurant Needs to Iron Out Kinks- Not Recommended

For the prices they charge, I normally expect more creativity from the menu. Specifically- the lobster bisque was watery, and the pork consisted of a large layer of fat. The crab cake was delicious as was the rib eye. Very inconsistent! The service was adequate but not friendly. The decor was bland. I would give them another chance six months later since they are a new restaurant, but not until then.

Avoid it! Overpriced, mediocre food. – For $130 for dinner for two, go downtown instead. The food is very mediocre; Lineage does not compete with the more upscale restaurants downtown in the same price range. Make your reservations elsewhere!

Best in Brookline – We dined at Lineage and had an outstanding meal. We tried the cod cheeks -interesting use of the wood fire stove. Delicious scallops and steak. Excellent service. Nice selection of wines. The Butterscotch Pudding was suggested for dessert and it was out of this world.

Service 101: BUY IT – First time I went to Lineage it was great. They had first opened and it was a good all around experience.

Second time was a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine and I went online to find restaurant hours because we wanted a late dinner. I live about 3 blocks away. By the time we got there is was a good half-hour before posted hours said the kitchen was closing. Upon walking in, the bartender informs us from across the room that "we are closing early tonight. Sorry!" with a stupid grin on her face that could only be construed as "Yes! I can't wait to get out of here!". This was a THURSDAY night. Now, why are you closing early? I own restaurant in town and can only pray the owner sees this and the proper people can be disposed of. I'm sure he doesn't want his business run this way. STAY OPEN UNTIL YOUR POSTED TIMES. Especially a THURSDAY! Especially if you want to be SUCCESSFUL.

So, my first experience was so good that I decided to give it another shot. Last night (1/24/07) a friend mine and I had a EXCELLENT dinner at the bar. Service was good. We were asked to see a dessert menu and said sure. We still had glasses of wine. The bartender then asked us if we wanted dessert and we said no. We were about to either order a bottle of wine or more drinks because I hadn't seen my friend for a while and we were planning on staying to chat. Not even an offer for more drinks, just a check thrust into our face. I didn't even ask for it. This was about 8:30. I could see a bartender trying to get out at closing time, but now, he just lost a sale for himself and the restaurant. Stupid. We got up and went to Fugakyu and had a few more rounds that COULD have been at Lineage.

Please, do yourselves a favor and train people correctly or stop hiring dumbs**ts. Its ruining your restaurant. I'm never going back and it's a shame because the food is great.

Excellent Food, Zero Ambiance. – I arrived at about 5:10 on a Tuesday, with no reservation. There was one couple at a table, and another couple arrived at the same time as I. I was greeted with "Are you here for dinner?" which I thought was a bit strange. Ambiance was attempting "stark modern," but lacked lighting, color, seating design or anything else to give it the drama "stark" needs. On the other hand, I went for the food, and it was excellent... starting with a perfect vodka martini ("Lineage Martini") with a curly twist. $9.50 The half dozen oysters were $14, and were opened and served perfectly... no bits of shell, oyster liquor was retained in the shells, chilled exactly right, and fresh, plump and sweet. I could have made a meal of appetizers alone... so many with descriptions that made them very appealing. I settled on the "white" pizza. Delicate crust with just the right amount of toppings. I ordered salmon, and Jason (knowledgeable and attentive server) asked how I wanted it cooked. I asked that it be cooked to chef's preference. It arrived hot, and slightly crusty on the exterior and the interior was just on the cooked side of rare... perfect, again. It had a wonderful smokey aroma, lightly salted and succulent. (I don't remember the accompanying vegetables, but my plate was absolutely clean when I finished.) For dessert, I had pear upside down cake... good, but not rave-worthy... and rooibus tea. By 6:15, I was ready to go, and the place was packed, with people waiting near the door. It looked like it was getting hectic. Glad I went early.

Make a reservation, definitely go for the appetizers and leave room for dessert! – My husband and I went there for a romantic dinner, and were not disappointed! We were seated almost immediately (with a reservation) and got great service all night. The appetizers were divine. We tried the lobster and sausage plate (sounds strange, but this is no ordinary sausage. I *loved* it.) and the oyster plate (best I've ever had). My scallop entree was quite good, maybe a little too hearty for the warm night we visited. The highlight of the night, though was the ending - the butterscotch pudding and the pumpkin cheese cake. I know they're celebrated for the pudding, but the cheesecake was what won my heart.

Lineage is one of a kind!!! – My friends and I are frequent diners at Lineage and our visits to this restaurant are never less than fabulous so I decided to show them some support. Their food is absolutely amazing and the service is impeccable, everytime! The food and wine is upscale and delicious, but with unexpectedly low prices. Also, the servers are different than the servers at most restaurants because they are not snobby, but instead are friendly and informative. Futhermore, their menu changes daily so we always have variety. Last night I had the Bay Scallops from Nantucket for an appetizer and the New York Steak for my entree and both were amazing as always. Definitely try the butterscotch pudding!!!!

Bad Food + Bad Service = Lineage – The night started off poorly when we were not seated for over 40 minutes after our reservation, and the hostess seemed to take exception to our inquiries regarding when we would be seated. The bread looked fantastic, but our waiter forgot to bring us any until we requested it well after our appetizers had reached the table. Although we were seated by 8:30, they were already out of several menu items. Three orders of fish (halibut, swordfish, and scallops) were all overcooked and the pumpkin risotto might have been Kraft Easy Mac and Cheese. A very expensive mistake. Do yourself a favor and go to Red Lobster.

Excellent Value for Great Food! – My fiance and I went to Lineage after reading some rave reviews in various Boston publications and the food lived up to my expectations! I had an excellent corn soup with really tasty "beignets"; a nice juxtaposition of sweet (corn) and salty (beignets) food. The roasted chicken was fantastic, both tender and flavorful. Contrary to some of the reviews on Citysearch, the service that night was good. Our waitress was very friendly and everything arrived according to what we ordered. The only downside was that the dining room was extremely warm, even though it was a chilly night outside. They had the doors open, but did not seem to have central air. Also, the inside dining room is very sparsely decorated, but for the prices on the menu, the food was excellent!
