Allie is the Best Hair Stylist at Scott J!! Best Hair cut I've had in Years. – For as long as I can remember I had been getting my hair done by the same woman in a salon in the city, she relocated and I was avoiding going to anyone else. A friend of mine who goes to Columbia recommended a salon by her school and told me that there was only one person i should go to. That person was Allie, she was excellent. She made me feel like I had been going there for a long time. I had a few complaints (split ends, dry hair) and she didn't make me feel embarrassed about it she just went straight for the solutions. She dyed my hair pitch black and cut it in these fabulous layers and the ends were perfect. I left the salon feeling beautiful and confident. It was the best way to start my day and my cut was done so well that I haven't had to get my ends cut for a few months. I can't wait to go back, Allie is the best thing that's happened to my hair in a long time. Great talent, great customer service, the best the Upper West Side has got to offer. Go to Allie!
Great Cut and Style from Lorin – I recently moved to the city, and was in a frantic rush to find a stylist. I know what you're thinking, but my hair is as thick as a horse's tail, and crazy nonetheless. It's wavy and unruly, as well as extremely difficult to do.
It was the perfect surprise when I came across LORIN at 114th. It was a wonderful experience. She suggested that I thin my hair out, and take the weight out in the back of it to prevent it from looking like a puffed out mushroom in the back of my head. I took her suggestions as she came off as a professional and knowledgeable stylist. I could also relate to her, and she genuinely seemed to be thinking of the best style for me. She cut my hair when it was wet and dry with extreme precision. I HAVE NEVER HAD A BETTER BLOWDRY in my life, either! My hair was so soft and weightless when she was done. I felt like a totally different person, and loved my new style. The blowdry lasted for four days. After I finally had to force myself to was my hair, I took Lorin's suggestion to dry it by styling my hair using my hands, then a round brush before finally straightening it. It worked! It was a miracle!!!! My style is something I can wear to work, but still feel stylish when going out in. I am very thankful to have met LORIN, and this is the least I could do to thank her for her expertise!
I highly recommend LORIN as a stylist if you'd like a hair cut you can feel great about!
Bad, expensive cuts – I went to Scott J. several times as a Columbia student. The salon is incredibly crowded, noisy, and the staff is highly unprofessional. I only kept going back because it was convenient as a student. However, Paula, who cut my hair, would always take off much more hair than I had asked. She even wanted to give my round face with curly hair BANGS! Are you kidding?! She had no concept of a flattering cut and I always left with wet hair. The assistants who wash hair are rude, and they all smelled strongly of smoke. I would always get shampoo in my eyes, and they used cool water to wash my hair because they said otherwise their hands get too dry. The place is a total rip off, and I cannot believe now having moved on to better haircuts, that I ever even went to this Scott J. Furthermore, there is very little seating while you wait, and they are ALWAYS late. I think this Scott J. location is awful, and I would certainly not get another cut with Paula.
Scott J Bring STYLE uptown!! – scott j's salon brings style uptown... from the moment you walk into the salon the friendly staff and chic atmosphere gives it the feel of a soho salon.... the stylists are on point, i was nervous about making a drastic color and cut change to my hair however my stylist bridget recomended a beautiful auburn color and cut my hair to compliment my face perfectly! bridget also suggested some amazing product to help my normally thin hair look volumious and kept the color fresh for way longer than it normally lasts..... bridget was amazing to work with she was funny and pretty
refreshing change – After having a terrible experience at the over rated Valery Joseph salon on the Upper East side. The owner Revi Roman was nasty and my hair was no better. I was reluctant to have my hair done again in the city but having just moved to New York I needed a steady place to go. A friend recommended Scott J and I was glad I went. Roberto did a great job on my highlights and cut. They came out better than ever and he was very good at soothing my nerves. The tea was also delicious and I thought the front desk staff was very nice. No nasty surprises just great hair and professional cordial service.
Not bad for the price – I got a $35 cut from Brittany, who was fine. I had to be vigilant about looking over the cut when she was finishing up because it was a little uneven in one section. Brittany was, however, quite genial and took the time to fix what I wanted. My cut turned out fine in the end. The shampoo and brief scalp massage were nice, and blowdrying is included with the $35. I would say that the junior stylists probably have fine, basic skills, but if you're looking for an advanced cut, maybe try a senior stylist or another salon. I'll definitely return in the future because I'm pretty cheap, easy to please, and my hair is not fussy.
Open to Suggestions – i just moved to the city and didn't know where to find a good salon, stumbled upon aveda while grabbing some coffee downstairs, was placed with a "new talent" stylist named Bridget. She was wonderful!! really listened to how i style my hair and reccommended some GREAT easy styling tips! She not only cut my hair wet but went through it dry as well to enhance my cut! She also recommended a wonderful smoothing shampoo! She definitly took her time to ensure i enjoyed my experience... i will definitly be back to see her! Great price as well and the salon offers discounts for professionals in the area!
Depends on who you get - stay away from junior stylists – I've had mixed experiences here. Last year I had a stylist who was quite good, but she left, and of course never left a record of my color services. So the next person didn't know what we had done. The last time I had my haircut here (it was with a junior stylist) it was the only time I've left a salon looking worse than when I came it. It was just an awful cut. Roberto (a senior stylist) fixed it for me, and did a fantastic job. With him, I felt I was in the hands of a pro. He fixed the cut, pointing out gently where she had gone wrong.
So, go for Roberto.
I also one had a manicure here and it was terrible. She sort of slapped the polish on and it was bad. Expensive too. Finally, the front desk staff isn't so great. One girl, I don't know if she's the manager or what, but she's often there, seldom smiles and is not friendly at all.
I don't love it here, but it's a reasonable option for this neighborhood, and some stylists are very good.
A BIG disapointment! – I have a great woman who cuts my hair in the East Village and I went to Scott J because of the association with Aveda - and its close to home. BIG mistake. I left totally annoyed with really dumb looking hair! The guy did NOT look at my hair when it was dry - which is a major pet peeve (how can you style hair when you have no idea what it even looks like?!) When I told him what I wanted and what kind of a style I already have (which is really hard to do when your hair is soaking wet!) He just kind of looked at me like I was dumb and not making sense. Then I showed him a picture and he just blew me off. He cut my hair in about 7 minutes and just sort of smushed it around with his hands - didn't really style it or use any products. I walked out with hair that was flat and had no real shape. Seriously the combination of the rushed, careless service, the condescending attitude and the utterly disapointing results just put me in a foul mood! NEVER AGAIN.
Tone Deaf – My stylist paid little or no heed to my requests, was dismissively rude and completely mangled a not terribly difficult men's cut. I will not be returning.
