great place for a date. my husband and i went here on a date. they were busy, but the service was great! the food was delicious. very romantic!
Great oysters and great burger!. The oysters are fresh and they have a good selection. Definitely one of the top places in Portland for oysters. Also, try the burger. It's really good!
Stop with the oysters - food not worth the $$ (or $$$$$$). My wife & I enjoyed the oysters and we should've stopped there. Instead ordered 2 entrées...oh boy! Talk about a waste of $$ - blaaaaaand & boring...and - my goodness - pricy!! The tuna was grilled correctly but the "sauce" was basically starch + food coloring agent.
excellent food and service. Being a first time visitor i didn't know what to expect but it was a very nice fine dining experience and i will go again. The food was impeccably fresh and cooked to perfection. Very nice selection of cocktails as well and some interesting house infused liquors. At times i had more than one server and my water glass was never empty. i would recommend the Chefs Whimsy for the adventurous diner as the combinations were surprisingly well matched. I didn't even have room for dessert. The topper was having the chef introduce herself to me and ensuring that my dining experience was truly pleasurable.Nice atmosphere.
Not Impressed. Some friends and I have wanted to come here forever but were completely disappointed with the whole experience. The menu was too pricy for what you got, the portions were not satisfying (after spending a 100 bucks on a meal we had to go eat again!) and all three meals were horrible....over cooked and bland-NO FLAVOR! The service was great IF I WAS EATING AT A DIVE BAR but not appropriate for a pricy establishment. In this economy it takes a lot to spend good money on food but it's worth it when the food is amazing...we were left really upset that we made the choice to dine here, especially when Portland is full of fantastic restaurants. I also expressed my opinion, as nice as I could, to the server because I feel it is important for them to know and she was defensive and acted as if she couldn't believe it....and DID NOTHING, matter a fact after telling her she wouldn't come back to our table and had someone else take our bill, the staff seemed a little arrogant, not service oriented! Less than impressed and won't be back and will tell other friends that also have been wanting to try this place to steer clear!!!
Best intimate fine dining in Portland.. The Alberta Street Oyster Bar is one of my favorite fine dining experiences, with an aesthetically pleasing dining room accompanied by a low key atmosphere. The crew there is friendly and attentive, which always adds to the experience. I have sampled several options they offer on their menu however want to particularly mention the grilled rare tuna, halibut, and baseball sirloin entrees. I eat out quite a bit and these are repeat performances for sure. Great starters in my opinion include the absinthe steamed blue mussels, and you cannot go wrong with the oysters which are always offered in nice variety. The cocktails are unique and finish it off nicely. Try any that include fennel infused bourbon, rosemary infused gin, and the cherry bourbon. I was there most recently with a group of friends on Valentine's Day. I have no idea how many people came through their doors that night, but my group had the same great food and experience despite the mad rush of a holiday weekend. Thanks to you all,, a top Portland recommendation for sure!
The Great Pretender........... My GF .wanted to go here forever, so I surprised her and took her here on Valentine's Day. The host was great and super nice. Tara, our server, had only two tables when we arrived, but it still took her 10 minutes to say hello. She also likes to up her alcohol sales by taking your drinks away without asking if your finished. I don't need to drain a drink dry, but trust me, when their drinks are so pricey, I would like to finish the final 1/4. Their oysters are great, but aren't they all as long as you get them fresh? They don't know how to cook steak there and the meat is substandard. We aren't difficult people, but when you order your steak medium and it comes out rare, and it is $30, yeah, some thing is wrong there. My GF finished her tuna with a somekind of mustard-lobster cream sauce, not so good. My steak came back 10-15 mins later. I asked for a box and Tara unkindly put it on our table without a word. PF Chang's even wraps it up for you! $117 later and the only one satisfied was my beagle after she ate my steak. Clueless Chef........Alberta Street Grill.........they great pretenders! Don't bother unless you're a person whose attitudes and behavior are marked by conformity to the standards and conventions of the middle class.. Bourgeois...white bread...square...dull... I took my son (home from the military after a 13 month deployment) here for his 21st birthday. I called and made reservations & informed them of this. We came with his two siblings and some friends of theirs. I've been to Oyster Bars in New York City, Chicago, New Orleans and Seattle and Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill doesn't come close to even the worst of these. We waited 40 minutes for a table we'd reserved in a small vestibule with no drinks. The gentleman avoided contact for quite some time and then he came to us and told us that he would make up for our wait. He did not. We were seated & they gave my 21 year old son an oyster shooter. The people with us are in a rock band & have oddly colored hair. Young people. They were not welcome by the other patrons...one woman stared for most of the meal until I smiled & waved at her. If you are looking for a young, hip, fun, rest of the world sort of oyster bar, this isn't for you. Mediocre service, good food, small portions, over priced, gratuity included in bill. Square, white, dull...cracker town. If you want bourgeois, you'll love this place...but I strongly suggest that if you have visited other "real" oyster bars, don't expect the same from Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill. It's just a wanna be Oyster Bar.
Great bar menu. We have been going to the Oyster Bar now for quite some time, and were devastated when they were temporarily closed. We often come in for happy hour at the bar, and enjoy some oysters, and other specialties off the bar menu. New items are the tuna tatare (amazing), and the mussel salad, also really good. We still preferred the old sausage/mussel dish from the past incarnation, the new absinthe dish it is a little bit too bitter, but it is nice to see the menu change and try new flavors. The drinks here are also superbly done, bring back the mango mohito! The service here has always been very good, and it is a treat to talk about the oysters with the chefs who wander through.
Down hill since Eric left for Seattle. We had been going to ASOB since its opening, and always loved the food and the staff. We eventually moved to the neighborhood, and started to be recognized by Eric, Andrew the mixologist, and the servers. We felt like family and we visited often. Even after ASOB closed for awhile and reopened with a new owner, we couldn't shy away from our favorite PDX dining establishment. Then Andrew left. Then Eric left. And now, we feel love no more. The new bartender is a tool. The food is adequate, but now the menu has more land than sea items. And the staff seem over it all...too cool to care. I hate to say, but our relationship with Alberta St. Oyster Bar is over. So long good friend...
