Pretty good, but not worth the price..
I love Indonesian and Malaysian food. This place is OK but nothing to write home about. The Sate' was too sweet for my taste, but not awful. The salads were too vinegary, but again were acceptable. In Amsterdam there are a hundred little mom and pop places with food of this caliber, but the prices are much lower. As it is, you pay too much for this place because it's the only place around with this style of food. They should stop pretending to be a fine dining restaurant, lower their prices, and just be a good snack bar.
I wonder why this place is listed under Indian food. There are no Indian selections on the menu.

It was our first time there and our last.
We went for dim sum which was actually rather good.
I am from San Francisco and grew up eating dim sum.
Dim sum houses in SF are notorious for rude service something one just accepts, but our server was beyond pushy as he brought the carts of food around
he kept trying to put food on our table we clearly did not want.
I could live with this but as we where leaving an employee seated at a small table was
prepping food for public consumption at the same time she was eating and spitting bits of food back on to her plate.
If that's what happens in the dinning room I can only imagine whats happening behind the doors of the kitchen.
Very good food, great service. The selection is great, noodle dishes and the mango chicken were excellent. Great service as well. I was impressed with the Malaysian beer selection
GO to any other Asian place on 82nd, but not this one!!!. This place has gone DOWNHILL, it pretty much Stinks!!! Service was OK, but the wait was not worth the food. Extremely small portions. Everything on the menu has raised .50 cents per item!!! WTF Why should I pay extra because your already over priced for the neighborhood? We were one couple of 2 other people eating in the place at 5:30 on a Friday night!!! 1.75 for a can of coke? 1.50 for a small serving of white rice (small cup) my dish should have come with rice, there lunch menu has rice included with it. Free soda refills at lunch, but you bring me a warm can of coke and no refill for dinner? This place really wants to stroke you for extra money, and trust me, there was no happy ending to this meal!!! This place will go by the wayside because I will never recommend it to anyone. I have eaten at this place since it opened and have seen it's greediness push customers away. Thanks, but no thanks. You will be happier if you try most any place on 82nd, and the prices will be much better that Malay!!!
fantastic food, fast friendly service. WOW!!! We arrived at Malay Satay Hut at a friends recommendation. We ate here 2 times that first week. If the restaurant were closer to home this would be our weekly dinner out. The service was fast, friendly and helpful in navigating the menu. The wait staff also exhibited extreme patience, if not kindness when our child insisted on getting up to explore the live fish tanks every 5 minutes. However the best part of our experiences to date has most definitely been the food, its amazing!! Fresh, clean, authentic flavors. Everything we've tried has been 5 stars. Our four year old daughter loves the mango chicken, its a bit spicy for her young taste buds, but she enjoys it so much she wont stop eating. Other dishes that have made an impression are the Chicken Satay, Roti Canai, Curry Lamb, Coconut Rice and my favorite Hokkien Mee. We also tried a crispy pork rib dish that was absolutely fantastic. I'm looking forward to our next dinner out, there are so many interesting dishes to try.
Mixed Results, Give it a Second Chance. I don't know why one user expected a "total fusion between malaysian and indian" cuisines, never having billed themselves as that, Malay Satay hut explains on their menu that Malaysia being situated where it is geographically has had culinary influences from India, Thailand and China. That being said I'd never had Malaysian food before and so when I went ordered something a bit more familiar- the Singapore noodles which seemed to be close to Chinese lo mein. Whether or not it was "authentic", as in standard ingredients and preparation, the greasiness overwhelmed the spices of the dish. I dined with three other people and we all shared the roti canai which was very tasty albeit milder than the canai I've had at Indian restaurants. My dining partner also had a take on a Chinese dish involving fish and fun noodles which was nearly flavorless. The best thing that was ordered was a vegetarian dish, the mango tofu. The menu is extensive and I'm sure with enough sampling I'll encounter something new and satisfying...I would just recommend eating vegetarian on your trip.
Teh Tarik, Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak!!!. So I awoke this morning with clouds and nostalgia hanging over head, and a craving for the Malay breakfasts I enjoyed for so long while living there. Now I'm not a food snob and I'm aware of the fact that a restaurant in the states must deal with what is available and also appeal to a wide range of tastebuds in order to be profitable. With that being said I have found a new favorite. The Roti Canai was spot on, the Mee was just as satisfying as it was in Malaysia, albeit a bit more bland (due to the lack of spices available perhaps). The wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable about Malay cuisine and drink (Teh Tarik!). The atmosphere was authentically Portland but the life size canvases gave the imagination a path to wander down about where it was the food I was eating came from. The owner was friendly and a native of Ipoh, on the northwestern coast of the peninsula adding a bit more confidence to the experience. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has eaten in Malaysia / Singapore with full confidence. I just wish I could have eaten with my hands.
Surprisingly good. My date and I were very impressed with this restaurant. We started with the roti and curry for dipping which was spectacular, the taste really reminded me of Little India. We shared the Mango Tofu Salad which was also very flavorful. Our main meal was the Eggplant in garlic black bean sauce, also a decent entree. The service was good, people were friendly and prompt with ordering, refilling water, etc. The menu provided lots of options and the fact there were pictures of some of the dishes will help those not familiar with Malaysian cuisine. I'll definitely be back to try more yummy food!
Equal to a really good meal in Singapore or KL. We first happened on the Malay Satay Hut several days after it had opened and were thrilled to find a congenial Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant with dozens of authentic-sounding tastes and dishes. (We lived in Singapore and have traveled in Malaysia.) In additon, it's a handsome space. Our table of five ordered a lot of food (for not a lot of money). My father-in-law had a durian shake - not something you find often in the states. Have been back to this restaurant at least six times, for lunches and dinners. "Achat," an appetizer made from pickled carrots and other vegetables in a peanut sauce, is divine. The tofu dishes, ditto. Vegetables are fresh and the flavors are wide-ranging. The service has been unfailingly helpful and friendly. Have I mentioned "unpretentious"? Your server will not congratulate you on your choices. This is a really great restaurant that I've taken out-of-towners to, and everyone's been very pleased.

May -Not- go again. Malay Satay Hut is less than thrilling. The service is terrible and the food was simply slathered in flavored corn syrup sauce. I have never had the pleasure to visit Malaysia in all my travels. I was curious and wanted to try new items I was unfamiliar with as I typically find those end up being favorites. When asking about a vegtable we were unfamiliar with we were told about what sauce it came with. Not about what the vegetable would taste like. Just that it was a Malaysian vegetable. I was disappointed by the ability of the staff to answer basic questions about their cuisine. He could not tell me if it would be bitter or nutty or what else it might taste like.
The menu was not accessible to those not already totally familiar with the cuisine. Our dinner came with one very tiny bowl of rice and it was nearly impossible to find a server to flag down and ask for more. I am not willing to put service aside. I don't recommend this place.
