Less than "charming" – I tried this place out, hoping to find a neighborhood gem, unfortunately it is more of a neighborhood dive. The barista was clueless on how to make a dry cappuccino, the place was ultra dirty and unsanitary. I have also had much better tasting espresso for less.
Cozy Coffee Bar – This is one of the nicest independent coffee bars around. Great locally brewed coffee and pastries too. What's not to like? Also, bagel sandwiches that are great! We eat and drink here all the time and find the place to be family friendly and not full of attitude. The coffee here tastes like coffee should, not that Starbucks rubbish.
Forget this place. – High prices, sparse seating, and heaps of we're-to-cool-for-you hipster attitude make this a place to avoid. Better to spend your money at nearby Ennui.
very poor service – I tried Charmers twice and that will be the last time. I thought that the service was quite slow on my first visit but the second time I went, I could not believe how awful the service was. There was a group of four people ahead of me and all ordered an espresso drink. I then proceeded to order a latte. The barista was awful. He was calling out the drinks "one of four" and then five minutes later "two of four" and then 5 minutes later "three of four", ok you get the idea. I waited 20 minutes for a latte. That is absolutely ridiculous. The prices are right up there with Starbucks but the service and quality of the coffee simply do not warrant it.
Not Going Back...... – I've been to Charmers three times. Twice, the coffee was blah, once, it was excellent. At all times there was not much in the pastry cabinet. I had a piece of cherry pie, the last in the case, which was tasty, but small and kind of dry. There was a pit in it, which I almost hurt my mouth on. Sorry, this place is overpriced and needs a good competitor, which may be the new one on Morse St.
The Bagel place next door is tasty, a little overpriced, but food is very fresh and a little more worth it.
Charmer's Rocks! – The service here has greatly improved since they first opened, and is now comparable, if not better, to Starbucks, particuliarly the one @ Dominic's Gateway. The coffee is delicious, and they have the best croisants I've ever had in Chicago. They also just started carrying Homer's icecream, which is incredible. The prices are a bit high, but the treats are so good it's worth it.
Good try just not gonna do it – Its funny how most of these people who want to start coffee shops, do it because they hate coffee giants like Starbucks, or other chains.....Don't get me wrong I love going to places that roast there own coffee or are the small coffee house feel, but one thing this place and other places like this cannot compete with is the quality or customer service that Starbucks gives..regardless of a few bad experiences at the starbucks across the country its still better than my two and only two experiences at Charmers, bad espresso, over priced even more than Starbucks. Learn your machinge please...
Editorial Review – Rogers Park locals lounge with coffee and light bites at this neighborhood cafe near the lake.
Bar unlike any on Halsted – Like many before and many soon to come, I am a recent exile to Rogers Park, fleeing the persecution of inflated housing costs common in Halsted Street Boystown. I stumbled upon Charmers, what I like to describe simply as a little gem. In the past, I would have never considered going to this place, not with all the alternatives along the main strip off Lakeview or Andersonville. Now that I'm at Chicago's northern border, I would recommend stopping in just for kitch value. Don't expect twinks galore and shirtless musclemen here. What you can expect is a place to sit your fanny, throw down a cool drink, and actually be able to listen to the person sitting next to you without having to shout. This bar has history and this bar has character. Does make you feel like 'slumming' somewhat, but it's all good.
