The dearth of Vietnamese, and pho in particular, in Hawthorne is made up for by the quality at Pho Van. And the vegetarian salad rolls are ace, too.
Seeing as this is the closest soup source to my house, I pop in for pho-to-go pretty regularly. The chicken version is my usual, especially when I sense impending illness, but I’ve also grown fond of the vegetarian version—always ask for extra vegetables though.
Not so bad – Today three of us went in to Pho Van. We sat for 17minutes before anyone came by. When the cocky waiter finally came, we alerted him we were in a bit of a hurry. He then suggested we get the soup because it comes out the fastest. Well after we waited for another tweny minutes we kept hearing one more minute ,one more minute. We then ask the waiter if we could get it to go. He walked over to the kitchen pulled our ticket off the back. He then yelled this is to go. They had not even started it. Then we proceeded to wait. One of our party members whom may I said paid for the meal had to leave because she had to return to work. with no food Then we proceeded to be told to wait. We started talking with an employee explaining why were upset and the cocky waiter slapped the other employee on the shoulder and said I am taking care of this. The waiter walked away again leaving us waiting again. He then approached us, he said "well I am reallty pi$$ed about this, and it's my staff in the back that screwed this up sorry". HE IS PI$$ED, WHAT ABOUT THE CUSTOMER! DONKEY! He gave us our food with no reimbursment and welcomed us to come back.... Yeah NEVER again
..... After talking with the manager Elizabeth, We may return. She reimburst us and was very understanding and helpful!
Yummy Pho for a rainy day – I had some family in town and they live in a small town with not a lot of variety of restaurants so I thought I'd take them to try Pho since I love Pho. It was a rainy day and them being from California I thought they needed a little warming up and Pho is always the perfect cure for a rainy day for me. The service wasn't great but not terrible and we (all 4 of us) were very happy with our food. We had a few appetizers and the Pho was just as good as I've got at any other place so I was satisfied. The restaurant has beautiful decor too, beautifully carved wood bench seating and ornate lighting fixtures, I felt like I was in an upscale restaurant in the pearl but paying the same price I do when going to some other not so nice "authentic" Vietnamese restaurants.
terrible chef and crew and no managers onsite – Three people went to dinner on Saturday night at 9PM, ordered our food and waited. It took a while and when one of the dishes was not prepared according to the menu description and it was sent back. The waiter then returned and said the chef said that's how it was supposed to be and argued with us. We have been eating there for 2 years. We then said we wanted another dish, the waiter came back and said the chef refuses to make another dish since it is closing time and he is leaving. So this customer went hungry. Then they walked past us out the side front door, the entire kitchen staff, three short dark skinned men that looked Mexican, and also related.. Only 2 waiters were left to close up the place, on a Saturday night. We were told there were no managers on site and there wouldn't be until the weekday. So, here it is! We will NEVER EVER go to another PHO VAN restaurant in town, including SILK!
Overpriced – This restaurant tried hard to make itself "fine dining" but it really doesn't work with the menu of soup, vermicelli noodles, and rice. The only thing similar to fine dining would be the price.
Pho Van used to be one of my favorite restaurants when they were smaller (first location at 82nd),
the food has since dulled and become bland (both locations). The peanut sauce is watered down and the serving size has decreased but the price has increased (both locations).
I think I will stay at my usual Vietnamese Restaurant in Vancouver.
Not worth it – I am Vietnamese and just moved to the Portland area and was curious to try out this place after my bf suggested it. I have to admit, the decor was nice, but the food was dull and missing the flavors of traditional Vietnamese cuisine. I got the shrimp paste hand rolls which were not very filling and the peanut sauce was extremely watered down. Not having satisfied my craving for Vietnamese food, we decided to go to Pho Da Lat the next day on 39th Street right before Hawthorne. There, the food was much more authentic and thus, yummy (it was also less expensive). My advice: save your time, and more importantly, your money and go somewhere else like Pho Da Lat.
Worst Dining Experience in Portland – We normally eat at the Pho Van on 82nd but decided to try the one on the Hawthorne as we were meeting friends in that neighborhood. There were five of us in our group and we couldn't quite make up our minds what to have. The waitress was really rude and impatient (the place was not that busy). When one of our party asked what the vegetarian options were, she rolled her eyes and pointed to a section of the menu. When the food did arrive she practically threw it down on the table and walked away. When I asked another waiter to speak to the manager, he pointed out it was her and she was already serving us. He kind of laughed knowlingly and apologised! We asked him if she was also the owner and he said the place was owned by the same people who own the one on 82nd Avenue. Near the end of the meal (which was not that good) I asked the waitress for some jasmine tea. She ignored me, which made me seriously wonder if she was slightly hard of hearing. Five minutes later my tea arrived, so she had heard me after all! I would never ever eat here again.
dsnichole's reviewed the wrong restaurant – dsnichole: you reviewed the wrong restaurant apparently. this restaurant is not "run down". It hasn't even been there a year yet. Some of the newer places? What newer places? This place is brand spankin' new!!!
good – My dad loves this pho better than any of the newer places and he swears it is the best. I like it too but I prefer a little more atmosphere.
Everything on the menu has MSG! – attentive staff, pretty decor, but my partner is highly allergic to MSG and he could feel it in the air when we walked in. the waiter was so kind as to bring out a list of items with MSG ingredients, but thats pretty much every single thing on the menu, when you consider the sauces and marinades. i guess this is pretty characteristic of all vietnamese food. how dissapointing, though.
Cool neighborhood-type pho van – Good soup, curry, salad rolls, and specialties. Better food than you'll get at many (most?) restaurants, with friendly service to match, and prices below what you'd expect. Not to mention the cool decor. One of the best area spots.
