Good sichuan style restaurant. – A great and elegant place for those who really want to try some good sichuan style restaurant.
Once great but no longer – Sadly, it's becoming apparent that ownership or cooks have changed hands at least once since this place first openned to packed crowds. It used to be our favorite restaurant. The crowds have thinned and our terrible dinner there tonight was the last straw for us. Sad to say goodbye but it's time to move on.
pretty good and almost 90% a real sichuan style – a great and elegant place for those guys who wana try some sichuan style restruant. decroated with the unique color and bamboo. a little bit crowded
Great food, okay service, not always consistent – The place is generally crowded. If you visit this place on a weekend, it is typically crowded and you may have to wait for a while before being seated. I have been to this place about five times. The food is good for most, a couple of times the food ended up being okay, so the food quality is not consistent.
The service is really okay, again inconsistent. I've had times when the staff were really nice, and times when they were not. Overall, I would keep average expectations for food and service when visiting this place.
Relaxed atmosphere, good food – I love coming here for the hotpot. It's great for groups because you just throw in whatever you want to eat and everyone can pick and choose from the hotpot. The food is delicious, but a word of caution - spicy here means SPICY!!! I love spicy food, but I could barely finish a dish of Chili Prawns that I ordered once... I had to mix it in with the rice and it was still almost unbearably spicy. For hotpot, don't put lettuce in the spicy side... your mouth will be burning the rest of the night!
I crave this place. – Don't go for service or atmosphere. Go for the delicious food, the more than reasonable prices are just an added bonus. I haven't been treated rudely, the servers have actually been quite nice, but it IS a busy place and they might be a bit brisk. The menu is huge and can be overwhelming, sometimes with nondescript names like "ants on a tree", so unless you're well versed in Szechuan food, I'd look over it online first and see what you might like to order before going. The hot and sour soup is perfect, the dan dan noodles are served in a wonderful, vinegary, peanut buttery broth (I'm a bit of a vinegar fiend, so if you are not so fond of vinegar I'd skip these), the hand shaven noodles are deliciously hearty, thick and chewy, the dry fried green beans are wonderfully tender-crisp, the chicken is always meltingly tender... you get the picture. Appetizers, 2 dishes, rice, tax and tip all comes in around $30 for two which is a steal and you'll have enough left over for another full meal.
Stay away unless you want to be treated like unwanted step-child! – i have to say that the food at Szechuan Chef is pretty good--very tasty and great portion for price. however, i belive that the dining-out is an experience to be enjoyed not only in the sense of getting great food but also in the service.
the reason i only give two stars for this restaurant is due to the lack of service. i understand that the place seems to be always understaffed. however, that is no reason to treat customers poorly. many times i had to wave down the wait staff multiple times before i got their attention. a stern "will be back" or "okay" was the best acknowledgement from them as they quickly passed by the table. even then, i waited and waited for the service.
i have been at Szechuan Chef three times and actually had a good experience the first time. both the service and food were good, and that is why i went back. but the second visit was so horrible (ignoring; getting mad) that i was ready to walk out in the middle of the meal had my friends not pled me. i went back to this restaurant one more time to see if the second visit was just an isolated incident. unfortunately, the service was still bad and made me feel unwanted. even during the first visit, i witnessed a customer complaining to one of the wait staff--he was yelling so loud that i was sure that even the kitchen staff heard him. it seems that the owner(s) do(es) not seem to mind this kind of treatment to customers based on my experience. i wonder if they think poor service is not a big deal as long as the food is good... whatever it is, this needs to be fixed because, sooner or later, dissatisfied customers will find a new szechuan cuisine restaurant with great food and service.
stay away from this place if you do not want to be treated like unwanted step-child. also, the seattle magazine needs to review this restaurant again (and oftern on regular basis) because this restaurant does not present the caliber of excellence to be noted as one of the "best restaurants" of the year.
Craving Chinese – This was my first time here and we found ourselves a true winner. I know where both of us will be heading when we have a craving for Chinese food :)
Although the seating and service was prompt I felt the waitress was rude, she slammed our plates and water tumblers. But when the food was served I think I forgave everything
There was a wide range of dishes, but I settled for the wild chicken chili and my husband ate the Spicy pickled fish both tasted really good.
Once again the food is just AWESOME.
Where I go for Chinese food – i've now decided that when i'm hankering for Chinese food, this is where i'll go. my partner and i found this eastside gem whilst driving around looking for a place to eat, like any new parents dreading the thought of caring for an infant and trying to cook at the same time. when we went inside, we first gawked at the decor though it ultimately charmed us. we came to realize that everything was quite authentic.
we ordered the black bean shredded pork and the honey walnut chicken; both winners. in fact, i've ordered the pork (and another dish) every time since, though i'm trying to branch out. we also order the fried pot-stickers and, i don't know what they put in the sauce, but it's safe to say that i'm addicted.
the quality of service has been incredibly variable, though one does get a nice hot teapot as soon as one is seated. the service is usually fine, but once we were forgotten while waiting for an open table. beware : the place is a hive of activity on weekends! if we are lucky, our son is distracted enough by it that we can eat without too much interruption, though we're learning to feed him rice with chopsticks.
in the future, we hope to take more advantage of the expansive menu and also be a little adventurous and try the cook-it-yourself option the restaurant offers. i am not at all reserved about recommending this establishment to all my foodie friends, and then some.
Thank goodness for a new Asian Restaurant! – On my first time dining here, I came with two friends, and was meeting my sister there. I came in first, and got a table promptly on a Friday night. After seating, I was promptly given a menu as I waited for my two friends to come in from smoking. We spent a good amount of time waiting for my sister to show up, but the waiter was friendly and attentive. I noticed him watching us carefully to see if we were ready to order, and checked up on us several times.
I had several questions about the food, as I don't recall seeing any descriptions of the food. The waiter obviously spoke Chinese, and had a hard time answering my questions, but made a very good attempt to do so. I was impressed. (My friend spoke better Chinese than I do, so he ended up asking the waiter for me.) They had a good variety of food. The proportions were huge and made for sharing like most Asian restaurants.
To get service in an Asian restaurant, the guest needs to be more assertive, which is different than in an American restaurant, where the waiter/waitress is expected to be attentive. Therefore, the service met my expectations for an Asian restaurant.
