FANTASTIC!! Great food and friendly service – This place is truly a gem. Whether you go by yourself or with a large group, the service is always friendly, helpful, and comfortable. The owner is this wonderful guy who puts everyone at home. I have never had a bad dish there, and though it sounds corny, it tastes like everything there is made with love. The garden is an unexpected surprise. The wine list is well appointed and rather extensive and has enough variety to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. I just love this place and think everyone should try it before you can't get a reservation!!!

Amazing Food – I had dinner here last night, and everything was outstanding. The service was great, and the food was perfect. I had the scallops, my friend had the steak, and we shared a filled pasta - I had high expectations, and they were exceeded. The back garden was very nice, and the inside was well done. It is definitely a new favorite.

Best reasonably priced Italian food in the city – We went for the first time last night. Arived at about 7:30p and the restaurant looked empty. Was this really where we wanted to go? The man at the door (who turned out to be the owner) saw our apprehension and with an honest smile (like he knew we were in for a surprise) said come on in, everyone's in the Garden. We followed him though what looked liked a small, typical Italian restaurant to a LARGE bustling outdoor space. We were surprised.

The food was excellent. The flavors were perfectly blended. The wine list was clearly put together by someone who knew what they were doing.

As for a previous comment about the wait staff. As a previous waiter myself, I can tell you when a restaurant first opens it's difficult to get good help. Good help typically already has a job and will only move to a new location if it's proven to be profitable (e.g. customers willing to spend, an owner willing to wait out the initial limited volume).

Barbone hasn't been open a year and people were waiting for tables (on a Wednesday night nonetheless).

We will be regulars (if we can continue to get in).

Twice satisfied – I went once in December and again just tonight and everything was wonderful. I don't know what those folks are talking about regarding the poor service. The owner has been very gracious and extremely excited about his food (Why shouldn't he be!). I always look forward to an opportunity to have dinner here.

Great Italian Food/Rude Wait Staff – The food is great (everything you could ask for in Italian) which was why we went back 3 times. We were hoping that when we went back each time there would be a change in server to a friendlier one. Each time there was a different server and each time he/she was unfriendly and aloof which can really dampen the mood. I'll try not to go back, it's hard though.

Owners are the best! – My wife and I come here all the time, bringing new friends each time. Actually heading there tonight because a friend is in town. Nice but casual atmosphere, great, friendly service. The owner, Alberto, is a really nice and takes care of his customers. He is also the mind behind the excellent wine list. Can't miss the asparagus fries. If you love liver, the chicken liver ravioli is awesome. My only gripe was the lamb was rarely tender enough. But lately they seem to have fixed that. Also, the prices can't be beat. We usually end up getting several plates to share and a few bottles of wine and probably end up between $30 to $50 per person.

Best new restaurant in East Village! – Good hearty food from apps to deserts! I live close by and have eaten there at least 6 times and each time has been an excellent dining experience. Their menu is very eclectic and different from the usual Italian joints and the wine list is top drawer. Their outdoor area in the back is really nice and the service is getting better. I highly suggest trying this new, fun place.

Great place for a birthday party – We celebrated a birthday at Bar-bo-ne last Saturday and had an amazing time. The food was delicious with generous portions. We had 20+ people and got 3 large round tables. The staff was great and very accommodating. Unlike most places, I wasn't required to give the precise number of guests, do pre-fix or even put down a credit card. We were allowed to bring our own birthday cake (that the waitress was kind enough to cut for us and serve). The wine was great and reasonably priced. We stayed until 1:30 in the morning and ended up finishing almost a bottle of wine per person.

I would highly recommend Bar-bo-ne in general and for large parties in particular.

Good food, rude service – Our table ordered the calamari to share and agreed it was a different take on the typical fried appetizer since it was fresh and topped on bruschetta. Everyone who ordered pasta dishes were quite pleased with the quality--I was very happy with the steak (medium rare and so tender). We ended the meal with different desserts. Everyone seemed happier with the cheesecake instead of the flourless chocolate cake.

The waiters themselves were polite but it was the owner who made dinner a very tense and unpleasant experience. Even though we had reservations, he brought the check when we weren't finished yet. Fortunately for him, he has a staff of decent people working for him. If you do go here, go for the food and outside patio in the back-- not for the service.

HORRIBLE SERVICE, GOOD FOOD (Maybe best for Take-Out????)!!!!!!! – We ate at Barbone last Friday for a friend's birthday. I had read all of the wonderful reviews and was excited to try it...and the food proved to be wonderful! But the service was another story...

We arrived promptly for our reservation, and were taken directly to our table and given menus. Where we proceded to sit, for almost 25 minutes, with no attention from the waitstaff, not even someone to take a drink order. When we finally were able to grab someone's attention (the owner? the wine man? Still not sure who it was,), he came over and said nothing. When we then asked to order wine, his exact reply was "Uh, wine?"

This set the course for our service for the rest of the night. As soon as we told him which wine we would like, he said nothing, turned on his heel, and disappeared for another 15 minutes. He eventually returned with the bottle and the same grumpy attitude- refusing to let us order some appetizers without ordering our main courses as well. This man was blatently rude, and made us feel as if we were imposing on his time to place a wine order (ironic, as Barbone prides itself on its wine selection).

Eventually we did manage to wrangle another server for the night, who never once asked if we needed more drinks, bread, anything, and when we finally ordered another bottle, she seemed confused by the request.

The food and the patio were excellent, as was the wine, but the service really ruined the experience for us. We were not in any rush, and would have loved to have a leisurely, relaxed meal, but that was tough to do, as most of the 2.5-3 hours that we spent there was spent waiting on food, wine, or service. The only exception were the busboys, who kept the bread and water coming (at least we had that!)- which is why we tipped them directly at the end of the night!

So overall impression- take out from Barbone may be your best option- at least if you are unfortunate enough to receive the same service that we did!
