Dissapointing Service and VERY LOUD – When we arrived, we were placed by the bathroom, after requested a booth a week an advance. No server, no placeware, no beverages, no menus (even after we asked). So anyhow we were seated elsewhere ... right by a party of about 20 teenagers yelling and screaming about makup or hairdos or something.
Food was good, but so is In-N-Out burger, so it was nothing to write home about.
After spending $120 or so and coming away with my ears ringing, I would skip it if I wanted to go to a nice place and eat some steak.
Try searching for some much better steakhouses, like Izzy's, etc. At least at Izzy's you get exactly what you expect.
A Disappointment – We arrived last night for a 8:15 PM reservation. The first table we were offered was a very small table practically ON Union St. in a secondary dining room. We said we would wait in the bar/cocktail lounge for a table in the main room. What we found there was a room full of high tables for 6 with bar stools filled with 20 somethings having dinner. The noise level in this room and in the main dining room which we finally made it to was deafening! We had the scrimp cocktail which was very good and Porterhouse Steaks @ $49. which were good, but not great. (Alfred's has a far better steak IMO.) Service was OK. Getting the car back from the Valet took so long, I thought there was going to be an uprising in front of the place! Would I go back? Not likely as long as SF has so many other better choices in the Steakhouse category.
Yes and no – Lovely atmosphere but lacks the charm of Old North Beach restaurants. More like something you'd find in Las Vegas, glitzy. Linguine vongole was beautifully presentled but was luke warm and didn't have the flavor that one comes to expect in an Italian restaurant. Clams were served steamed on the half shell but had no sauce. Was really hoping for garlicy herb and olive oil served piping hot. Our scampi was very different from any scampi I have ever had. I looked up 10 recipes for scampi on-line and they had certain commonalities; however the scampi we were served warm with salty green olives, peppers in a creamy sauce. It tasted okay but nothing like scampi. I believe in creativity but don't completely reinvent a classic italian favorite. I ordered the fruit and cheese plate hoping for some interesting artisanal cheese. We were served very attractive but cold ricotta, mozzarella, gorgonzola and parmesan. The fan of sliced peaches, apple and pear served with cheese was highly creative. Wines were excellent as was our crabcake appetizer and endive/peach salad - wonderful and different. Wait staff and hostess were all outstanding! Next time I'll try the steak...
Better Elsewhere – We flew in from NY. I was so excited to check this place out.
The place looks good, but the food is just not that great. I have had much better steaks in the city, in other restaurants. The pastas are not good at all. The salads, well, lets just say save your money. My steak was cooked perfectly but it just didn't taste like OH MY GOD good !
We started at the bar with a drink and a pizza. We were expecting to see the bartendress that everyone writes about and have one of her specialty cocktails, but she wasn't there, so needless to say, our cocktails just weren't as tasty as we know she makes.
The pizza was underdone, and very salty.
The server has this high pitche dannoying voice ! My god she was irritating! The only staff I saw worker thier butts off were the busboys. I don't know, I wish this place lots of luck, but I don't think it will make it, unless of course they have deep pockets.
Which Girl ? Custom drinks for you – To the most recent reviewer, there are two women working at Dimaggios. One of them has only a year behind her, and the other is an award winning mixologist. So, I am hoping the girl that served you, Victoria, is her name, was not the latter. Everytime I go in there, "She" comes up with anything I am feel like drinking. It could be whiskey, rum, tequila, gin, anything, and you will get a custom made drink just for you! Whatever your mood.
She has serveal years behind her, several magazine articles including The Chronicle, this restaurant is lucky to have her. If it was her, then maybe you were asking for one of the cocktails on THIER menu which are not good at all, compared to hers.
Take Care..........Ask Victoria to make you a Custom Drink !
Good food but, a few problems – I definately had different expectations of what this place is all about. After viewing the website and assorted PR, I expected a swanky, supperclub type of atmosphere. Not so! They have done a great job with the remodel but, the restaurant is so loud, it really dresses down the whole experience. The service in the bar was not great, the poor girl was by herself and could not keep up and also didn't seem to have much cocktail knowledge. We were seated at a great table by the window. We were not happy about the marble tables. Yes, they look pretty but, are ice cold to the touch! If you are trying to give a fine dining experience, why not white table clothes? Our waitress was very sweet but, again the service wasn't great ( they seemed understaffed, undertrained or both). The food was very good and arrived all at once but, was lukewarm. The waitress took too long to check back with us so, we ate it that way. We loved the wine decanting at the table but, again were confused with the "fine dining" touches, the so-so service and the loud, casual ambience. It didn't make sense. The desserts were okay but, the descriptions didn't match the actual dessert and the presentations looked exactly alike. When we questioned the server, she didn't seem to know and the "pastry chef" didn't know either? They assured us they were made in-house but, didn't know what was in them. This place could be romantic maybe on a quiet week night. The food was good and generous but, if i am going to spend this kind of money, I want a little more finese with my experience. Hopefully, they are still working out all these issues and it will be the great place the owners obviously want it to be!
impeccable in all respects. and great for a dinner party! – I brought my family, roommate and her family to this restaurant and had the most incredible experience. Food was top notch - everyone loved their dishes, and we are definitely sf foodies. Impressive wine selection. Unbeatable service (when was the last time you sat down to a dinner for 8 and had all 8 plates arrive at the exact same time). Beautiful decor and ambiance - warm, large restaurant but still intimate. I can't wait to go back. Great for a large party, gathering of friends, or romantic date.
Great service, atmosphere, food. Much needed in North Beach – We had a wonderful experience. Great atmosphere, friendly wait staff, nice wine list. Gnocchi melted in your mouth and the veal was tender and wonderful. Would definitely go again.
Service and ambiance is great. Food is OK. – Although the service was excellent and the atmosphere was great, the food was just OK. The best part of our meal was the wine and salads were ordered. The steaks were a bit flavorless and didn't taste very aged. We've been lucky to have had the advantage to eat steaks all over North America - and unfortunately, Joe's steaks just weren't as up to par. Most of the steaks had some kind of sauce or reduction/demi glace....it just doesn't taste as good! Proper aging, some salt and pepper - and of course cooked to perfection is all a good steak needs.
One person in our party ordered the salmon ravioli and it was good, but the lemony sauce overpowered the salmon.
Service was great, food was OK, so it all evens out. I probably wouldn't return unless forced with a group.....or on an expense account.
Order the T-Bone..Medium Rare..Tender and delicious and the thinly sliced potatos were wonderful. – Went with the family while walking in North Beach from Fisherman's Wharf. 7:30 PM on a Sunday. Friendly greeting and great staff. Party of 7 seated in less than 5 minutes. No reservation (lucky timing, I guess) Beautiful interior with great pictures and style. Menu not really suited for children, but the staff were VERY patient with my high energy boy and both he and my daughter found something they liked to eat. HUGE prawn appetizers and a very good choice of different entrees for adults. The steaks were mid to high in price ranging from low $20 - low $40s, but DELICIOUS. Large choice of wines and reasonable $ by the glass prices. Didn't get to try any mixed drink selections. Bill came to $240, including tip, for a family of 7 with 2 appetizers and desert/coffee.
I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant both because of the atmosphere and food. Don't be afraid to ask your waiter ANYTHING. You may feel a bit overwhelmed by the selection or atmosphere especially if you're with young children. Next time we visit San Francisco, the wife and I will make it a "date night" destination. A place I would want to visit each trip to the Bay!
