DONT WASTE YOU CASH – STAY AWAY FROM THIS NON-PUERTO RICAN RESTUARANT, POSITIVE REMARKS ON THIS SITE ARE FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS. i HAD THE DISPLEASURE OF EATING HERE ONCE, THATS ALL IT TOOK.

BETTER OFF EATING AT TEX-CHIC FOR REAL PR FOOD, TRY THE BREADED STEAK

Average Taste...WAY OVERPRICED – I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and have now been in Houston for 5 years. All this time I had been looking forward for a Puertorican restaurant that had normal operating hours and a bit more space (as compared to the other place near montrose). After hearing about this place, I finally made it there...what a disapointment. As soon as you drive up the first thing you see are two tacky tables outside that do not go at all with the whole restaurants decor. You walk in and you are basically in a large empty room with painted concrete floors and scattered tables along with a flat screen tv (obviously these guys have not spent a lot of time in researching restaurant staging). As soon as we sat down the waitstaff came around and were very pleasnant. The menu selections were small for the entrees, but had enough to properly represent your average restaurant back on the island. Our party of three ordered different plates and appetizers and have to say they all tasted surprisingly good. A true authentic taste, but nothing that would have me go back to it, if it were located IN Puerto Rico. The food did take a long time to come out, which was surprising as it was Saturday at 7pm, and there were only 4 other tables to serve! The true breaking point for me was the tab. The total for a meal of 3 (2 appetizers, 3 entrees, 3 sodas, and 3 desserts) was over $100!!! Not counting the tip. This meal in PR can vary significantly depending on where you go, but could be as low as $25 and much higher but NEVER as much as this. You could go to Aj!l! M*jili in San Juan and get extremely better food at a very upscale, trendy restaurant for less than this. PR cuisine is simply made, with mostly innexpensive items, so to charge these prices is ridiculous. I mean, think about it, you could go to a top steak house in town and spend less...Finally a place with good PR food, but unfortunately way too overpriced. Will NOT be going back again.

Great Puerto Rican food – I am truly 100% Puerto Rican. Borned, raised my entire life in Puerto Rico. Been in Texas for 4 years only. I live in Austin and came to Houston for a business trip, and found Isla Coqui on the internet to have dinner with my boss and show off my culture after working all day. I do not regret it at all. The menu gives you plenty of options. Music is very good, not loud like other review stated. Service is excellent! Not sure what some reviews were talking about when they indicated that the service was slow...but our food came back fairly quick. I do agree that it was a little over priced, but I think its because of the area. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone. Its awesome! =o)

Food wasn't bad...very pricey – We recently moved to Houston from Puerto Rico. I'm a real puertorican, born, raised and fed my entire life. As soon as I found out about this place I has to go, only to be very dissapointed. Food was ok, but the service is VERY slow and it is extremely pricey. Some of you may be accustomed to pay $15.00 for an entree which is not bad. But these same entrees and much more food and flavor in your plate you will pay at the most $7.00 back in PR, and trust me, there is nothing rare about the ingredients, specially in a city where you can find all sorts of puertorican stuff, to justify the high price. So when homesick and craving mama's food, rather stay home and cook it.

Not worthy of a single star – I can't begin to describe what a horrible experience this was. My husband and I sat at our table, he ordered a margarita - I a diet pepsi. I have never seen a slower server in my life, and I'm pretty fair because I used to be one. So to see her pass our table numerous times with the margarita melting at the bar was a bit annoying. And to top it off, she would say 'Your drinks are almost ready' when she did pass by. Bear in mind there were maybe 10 tables full - definitely not a busy night. The food was DISGUSTING. We ordered Mofongos - which was basically a hill of garlic and mush. I literally vomitted within the hour.

A very upsetting point was also how people that knew the owners/staff got superior treatment. As we got our plates I asked for a cheese empanada to go with it - considering how I could not even look at the entree. It wasn't until our plates were cleared and I asked for the check that the server had the nerve to bring it out to me. All the while, a table that upon entering emrabced our server in a hug, had her undivided attention.

So far, this would be the worst restaurant I've been to in Houston. And we've lived here for 20 years.

Terrific Puerto Rican Food – I have lived in the Houston area for 13 years and have always longed for Puerto Rican food. Well, last Saturday I found the perfect place. The food was superb and the service exceptional. When I mentioned to our waitress that I would be writing a review, all she asked was that I did not mention her name. I wish I could. I live quite a distance away, but the experience made the trip well worth it.

Muy Delicioso! – I was visiting friends from my native Brooklyn who moved to Houston last year. I really loved this restaurant! The food was soooo good, the atmosphere was very fesitve and the staff was wonderfully friendly and attentive. Also, the Coquito was excellent!

I didn't think you could get Coquito down there, and my friends do not make it (and they are Puerto Rican, I mean really!), so I had brought them down a few bottles of Mi Abuelita Coquito from my local store in Brooklyn, so between Isla Coqui and the bottles I brought down, they have more Coquito than they know what to do with. LOL!

In any case, I highly recommend Isla Coqui!

Great FOOD, a little expensive but worth it! – I am a 100% Puertorican and I grew up in NJ/NYC and looking for a Puerto Rican restaurant in Houston is like looking for a needle in a hay stack!! LOL So, I loved the food it was almost as good as my Mama's food and the atmosphere was so much fun! The owners came to our table and gave us coquito on the house and we had a blast!! The service was a little slow and the portions are small, so don't expect alot of food like we're use to serving at home...LOL that's why Hispanics are so overweight, we need to learn to eat smaller portions.... ANYWHO, over all the place is nice and food is excellent and the atmosphere is alot of fun especially on Friday Nights.. So if your looking for some good Puerto Rican food, Isla Coqui is the place to be!

Small Portions - High Cal - Does Not Justify Price – Considering that there are only perhaps 3 or 4 "puerto rican" restaurants in town - no wonder this makes the list as the best. Not a fair comparison. The wait was long, the lady seemed disoriented and the food portions were small, yet high in calories and fat from the look of the fried dish. The coquito was ok...but most of all puerto rican restaurants pride themselves with a good coquito. so thats nothing new. This place is in a shopping strip off a highway (not very romantic so dont recommend for dates). Owners seemed too busy drinking than attending their guests. Service was slow. Music too loud - not appropriate when people dine, makes for a less than comfortable dining experience. I went there another time but was turned away because it was closed and they werent ready...so tried again. and unfortunately with a date.

Best Puerto Rican food in Houston – I just came from dining at the Isla Coqui Restaurant & Bar.

I'm a Puerto Rican from Salinas and Grew up in New York City (Brooklyn).

This is the best Puerto Rican food I've had in Houston since I left NYC.

Try the Coquito!

On a scale of 1 to 10 I give this restaurant a 10 !!!!!!!!!
