lovely cocktails, beautiful atmosphere, trendy crowd. – My husband and I stopped by with another couple and marvled at the delightful, historic renovation of this Houson landmark. I'm from New York and could sense a little New York style-effort to be a bit too trendy for Houston's genial, kicked back style. Velvet ropes? Bouncers with attitudes? However, we were rewarded with tasty beverages and a fine cigar for my husband. The crowd was 30-40 somethings but I hear it's a younger crowd on certain evenings. Glad we were not there on those nights. A bit loud, too. Worth the effort for the sheer old-world beauty.
Downtown is making a comeback. – The bar is magnificent! Our bartender was so sweet and her drinks were exactly how we like them (we are martini snobs) I will go back. Great music the Friday we were there.
Beautiful place, great drinks. – Went into this place over the weekend after I learned about it from a friend. This is truly probably one of the prettiest bars downtown. It's got such a historical feel to it and the atmosphere is cool. The service was good and the drinks (although a little pricey) were even better. We went on Friday and they had a pasta chef there. Not sure if that's a weekly or nightly thing but it was really good.
Above and beyond customer service. – VIP area very very posh. Waitstaff are the best around. Will cater to your every desire and make sure your experience with them is top notch.
Worth a try... – I get mixed feelings about this place because it looks SOOO nice on the inside and there hasn't been a cover the two Saturdays I went. However, the bouncers try to do that "New York sh*t" with the whole "try to create a line outside by simply not letting people in" thing. For example... I, along with 5 friends approached the door at about 10:30 on a Saturday. No one else was in line, or even on the same block. The (short skinny dude with weird hair who shouldn't even be allowed to be called a) bouncer asked us if we were "on anyone's list." After I said no, he told me we would have to wait for a second, because he needed to give priority to the people who were on the list. We looked around... Still no one nearby. I waited for maybe 45 seconds, then was given the obligatory "just give me a second. I'll take care of you guys in just a second" stuff. Another friend asked who was throwing the party, and the guy gave the same answer. Real cute, guys. This is Houston. NYC gets away with that because they've always been prententious and elitist when it came to nightlife. Houston is pretty great, but, it's Houston... Maybe we can emulate positive aspects of other cities' social scenes... We got in after a couple of minutes, but the principle of it was kinda annoying. The free cover sorta made up for the semi-pricy drinks, but the service was fairly slow and disorganized, and the drinks just aren't good. DJ played some GREAT music practically all night, but the crowd was a bit stiff even though there was a great turnout both times. Usually it picks up when a few brave souls decide to start the party themselves on the dancefloor, and eventually everyone falls in line. Plenty of 20-something ladies and plenty of 30- and 40-something gentlemen, just as a disclaimer. That may explain the lack of enthusiasm for dancing...
