Marina has been taking good care of me for years! I was referred to her at Colortess four years ago and have always had a wonderful experience.....she does amazing hair color and always a fabulous blowout! I am so thankful to have found Marina! And, if you have time, Maggie gives a great manicure!
MARINA TO THE RESCUE!!!!!! I was recommended by several of my friends, but hesitated to make an appointment. After I did, I was so glad I did! Marina managed to give me the exact color and highlights I had pictured for myself, but was never able to achieve with other stylists. Marina's patience, dedication and attention to my requests enabled her to give me exactly what I was asking for. I will defintely not hesitate to make this a regular stop as long as I am assured that Marina is available.
Thanks Rodney! – My look has always been classic and natural, so it was a complete shock when I walked out from my trusted salon of ten years with a crown of orange/bronzy hair.
Not wanting to return to the scene of the crime, I walked into Tess Hair Salon a day later and was directed to Rodney who immediately put me at ease. He has more than earned my trust and my business as he managed to not only remedy my hair, but somehow tweaked it into the best cut/color I have ever had.
Awful Experience! – I'm going to start this by saying I have NEVER written a BAD review. EVER!
I stopped in this place today for a blow out. I have curly hair & figured I'd just have it diffused not to waste to much time. I told the stylist I usually use a leave in conditioner & curl creme. She used mousse. Very drying. I didn't say anything because she's the professional & didn't want to seem to picky. She diffused it, the whole time touching it and running her fingers through it. EVERYONE who has or works with curly hair knows that is a HUGE mistake. Needless to say my hair looked horrible. It felt dry and was one huge knot. You could not see a defined curl anywhere on my head. I didn't complain or mention my dissapointment while I was there. But when I got home & looked in the mirror I was so dissapointed that I spent money this awful blowout.....What I am the MOST angry about is when I called the salon to tell them how I felt the guy behind the desk didn't even give an apology, "It looked fine to me when you left here. I dont know what you did to it when you got home but we dont give refunds. You can come in & have it redone." he said. Seriously, dude???? I work the front desk at a salon (If it were closer I would have went there today but didn't have the time as it's in BK) and I would NEVER say that to a client! And if I did say that, I wouldn't have my job still. I have had better experiences at the Lemon Tree!
I'm sorry that people have to read reviews like this, especially one written by an employee from a another salon.Our policy is no refunds, but we are more than happy to work with our customers in any way to make them happy about their hair. When you called back after your visit you immediately stated that you work at a salon and demanded a refund or else you would write a review on Citysearch,which caused me to be taken back because honesty I really did think your hair looked great when you left
Rodney to the rescue! – After going to the same stylist for 8 years for highlights, I decided to try another salon given my stylist only works very limited hours these days. Unfortunately it was a disaster and my hair looked awful. It wasn’t natural and it was very dark in certain areas and barely lighter in others. Basically money thrown down the drain. I heard great things about Rodney and after he saw what was done to my hair, he worked me into his busy schedule and came to the rescue. He spent two hours redoing everything from stripping the bad color out and putting different tones of colors to different areas to make it look very natural. I am so thankful for his brilliance and attention to detail. He is truly an expert in his field and I am glad to say I found my new stylist! Thanks again Rodney.
Too expensive!!!!!!! – I went for the first time to ask for the price of hair treatment since my hair is very dry because of all the hair colors. So the girl who answers the phone called Rodney. He was very nice but he told me that my hair color was too brassy so he would give me some highlight and glossy on top of the hair color that I have.When I asked for the price he did not want to tell me but after he told me $210,00 for a highlight. I was in shock how he was so expensive. My hair is very short so I don't understand the reason for the over price. Also he was so pushing to make me book an appointment with him in the same day. I did not like that because everyone in that salon was watching me. . What can I say about this salon is too expensive and I don't care how good you are but I would not pay so much money for the first time. Come on be reasonable!!!
Rodney is a specialist for color correction. Unfortunately sometimes when doing color correction it requires the color be done in stages and must be attended to closely and will take a lot more time.
Rita Great for Cut and Color – Rita is a great colorist-my hair looks great it looks natural with the right combo of color-never to light, red, brassy or chunky she actually corrected a number of those problems that I had from various other hair stylists when I started going to her! She really listens to what you want, does a great hair cut and is really nice!
Where to begin???? – Where should I begin. Probably from the way I heard of this "wonderful" salon. A few of my friends have gone to Color by Tess for years and each of them say its great. My best friend has Rodney for a hairstylist. So I decided to give it a try. I went to the salon to fix my hair for a party my husband's firm was hosting. I ask for Rodney as my friend had recommended, but instead I was redirected to another hairstylist, Marina. I was a little bit furious towards the person who redirected me to her. But she said Marina was much better than Rodeny. When I got out of my seat I must say I had the holiday look. I looked just like the Grinch who stole Christmas. Needless to say I will never return to that salon in my life. I don't know why they didn't allow Rodney do my hair but someone else. Last time I checked I wasn't there to help a new hairdresser to gain practice. Thank you, color by tess for ruining my evening and my hair. This is the worst salon I have ever stepped into and I will make sure to redirect my friends just as Color by Tess redirected me to a "better stylist".

The prices are different when you book an appointment or request a stylist, length/thickness of hair, changing hair color, doing full head of color, etc.It is best if you get the quote immediately before getting your hair done, and at the salon with the stylist you want.Even if you get an Estimate from the receptionist, you still must confirm your quote with the stylist.Thank you, we apologize for the way you feel, and hope to see you again
Bait and Switch – I really wanted to like this salon. Close to my apartment and staff seemed so nice. The first time I went for a root touch up. A little pricey, but the color was perfect. In making a return appt, they quoted me a price for both the next touch up and a Keratin straightening process.
As I arrived for my second visit, everyone was just as nice as the first time until my hair treatments were completed and now all of a sudden, they would not honor the price that was quoted from before. Do these "business" people not know that they have to inform a client "prior" to services being rendered if they are changing what they promised? What a sham and now instead of having a regular customer they will now have an empty chair because that is just a dirty practice that will not be tolerated. I will be informing the BBB of New York/Manhattan as well. Liars and cheats do not prosper Color Tess. If I could give negative stars, I would. Go to one of the other hundred salons in the area.
