Good Food Good Portions Good Price – I have been here a few times now and I will continue to return when I am in the area. The food is really good. I had a Tuna Melt with Bacon and I thought it was delicious. The plates come with a side of roasted potatoes and a salad. You get all of that for around $10. I think the staff is very nice especially Sosa the manager. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good bite to eat at a reasonable price in the area.
Citysearch Editorial Review – A stylishly distressed copper storefront and quaint striped awning give this Morningside Heights eatery a cozy French brasserie-inspired look--fitting since the space was created by fashion designer (and former Soho boutique owner) Marc Bagutta. With a West Village vibe and affordable menu, Cafe Bagutta caters to nearby Columbia University students during the day with solid sandwiches (ranging from turkey and avocado to goat cheese and fresh tomato), salads and soups, and aims for an older crowd during dinner with entrees like the hanger steak and pan-roasted salmon.
the best banana bread and muffins but.. – they have the best banana bread in ny and muffin are prety good but they run-out very early in morninig.but the staff especialy owners Nadja I think is her name has some serious problems she screams on her staff and customers can see it all unbelivable and if you want to say something about food like is to salted or something is wrong she starts making rude words and yell on you mybe is the best to not visit that place anymore or go in afternonn when the manager is not there. and I know for the fact that she does not pay well workers so they become very slow in time of lunch when is very busy and we wait for are food like 25 min or more so plese manage beter or pay someone who know what to do. And to waiter or host Christian big smile the best he makes your day...
rude and disorganised staff – I live right near by, and had always thought the muffins and baked goods were of great quality... BUT I have had so many issues engaging with the wait staff there. From not having enough change (cash only) to forgetting my order (on several occasions) AND worst of all the newer wait staff is INCREDIBLY rude.
Unfortunately this was last straw... no muffin is worth ruining my morning.
Very nice place for coffee, veggie sandwichs and fresh desserts – I lived around the corner for about a year and went almost daily to Cafe Fresh. I am surprised by the reviews because I have a very different opinion. First, this is a university cafe so people should not expect high-end top cheff paradise. To add to this, staff was friendly but very slow and the owner / manager is very moody. That was kind of a problem. But I found food to be VERY good, from brunchs to sandwiches and definitely the teas and desserts!! I loved the atmosphere, they had nice music and I would sit to study in the window chairs. They usually had fresh cookies coming out from the oven when I was there.. and desserts... very tempting.
NOT CLEAN, CASH ONLY – At first I was annoyed because this place is CASH ONLY! Then despite the almost flavorless food I started to like this place because because it is close and the staff is friendly. But now I am disgusted and will not be going back for the subpar food. I got a salad to go and was not too happy because it had flavorless salad dressing. I had a bad feeling about the salad because every other bite I was pulling SPOILED bits of lettuce out of the mix. THEN I FOUND A FLY MIXED INTO THE SALAD (IT WAS COATED WITH DRESSING)!!! IT WAS DISGUSTING. I WILL NEVER GO BACK.
Worst brunch yet in NYC – maybe the name cafe fresh caused us to have higher expectations. my husband and i went there for brunch yesterday and had a humorous, yet frustrating experience. first, no orange juice (for brunch!). the seasonal fresh fruit, when asked, turned out to be frozen berries. my husband ordered french toast with caramelized bananas and i ordered pancakes with bananas. the hostess/cook? came over about 15 minutes after our order had been placed to tell us that they were out of caramelized bananas. when my husband gave a soft chuckle (since this was the third item they didn't have), she scolded him for laughing at her. in the end, they brought out both our dishes with honeydew and bananas on top. i'm not sure how you can be out of caramelized bananas if you have bananas, but i didn't ask for fear of a scolding. the pancakes did taste good, but i could have made them myself with the aunt jemima mix i saw sitting in the kitchen window.
in the end, it was a semi-stressful, disappointing experience. the only redeeming factor was that our server was very nice and my husband liked the coffee.
like other posters, i think it would be a good place if it was properly managed.
Avoid for Brunch – My friend and I stumbled upon Cafe Fresh one day as we searched for a nice brunch spot in the neighborhood. From the outside it looked like a nice little neighborhood cafe. We soon found out that it's a terribly disorganized place. It has great potential, especially since the food is good, but right now they have some serious problems to deal with:
1. Overly casual and unprofessional waitstaff: Both our orders came out incorrectly. And while we were there, we witnessed another four orders that were incorrectly given to the kitchen. So, all these plates ended up being sent back. Two of the three waiters there went on a long break while costumers continued to walk in. We saw the cook arguing with the servers because they kept giving him messed up orders. Also, we found the waitstaff's music choice to be less than desirable.
2. Visibly stressed manager: Due to the lax attitude of the waitstaff, we saw incorrect orders piling up, causing the manager to become highly frustrated. However, we believe he could have done a better job of managing the staff.
3. Good food: The food was good and priced reasonably. The menu options seem great. Unfortunately, our meals were overly salted.
If the management can follow the example of well-run restaurants, we're certain this restaurant could become a great place. We think the problems could be corrected by better management of the current waitstaff or better hiring.
Great organic food... but... – The food here is pretty good and best of all mostly organic (lots of vegan and veggie options too). The desserts look good but usually aren't that great. The staff is typically nice but the place is GREATLY understaffed and the wait for food - be it eat in or take out, takes FOREVER. My biggest issue with the place, however, are the owners (mom and son). They are not particularly friendly and are often in a bad mood (esp. mom) and sometime yell at their staff in front of everyone. I also don't think they treat their staff particularly well (the fact that it is so understaffed and very busy during the school year attests to this). Love it b/c it offers healthy, organic fare at mostly reasonable prices, but hate the attitude of the owners. Want to support the place b/c of it's high quality food/ingredients, but am so turned off by the owners that I try my best to avoid it (usually end up going anyway).
Good place to read. – I use this place on occasion to study and/or read. The people who work here are really friendly and gave me free coffee on an occasion we had a dispute with another worker here who kept dimming the lights.
There are seats that face the window so it's fun to people watch between reading. The coffee is good and inexpensive.
I haven't tried their food yet.
