For the Artsy Fartsy – Coming here for the first time? Be not afraid - look for the little handmade sign on the sidewalk saying "Lost Souls," and follow it into the alleyway. What awaits is a hideout that is out of the heat and bustle of downtown with lunch specials ranging from $6 - $10, relaxing music on the speakers, and just enough space between the tables to give you some privacy as you work using their free wi-fi. In the area from 5 - 7? Stop by for happy hour where they offer $3 beers and sangria.

It's in the Alley! – On 4th between Spring and Main Lost Souls is home to half the historic core's loft buildings. I live above the cafe and make almost a daily trip in for dark roast coffee in the morning. The cafe has plenty of table, chair and couch space to chill out, eat and study. They also have great events including poetry and hip-hop nights. If you're down for Art Walk or any other reason, pop in and check it out.

A Hidden Gem – The name alone attracts me to this location. Finding it is another story. If there wasn't a sign in front of the alley entrance, I would have missed it all together. The coffee shop offers free wireless. Inside, the place is very spacious. The tables are spread out, giving its customers plenty of room. The decor moves toward modern art. The workers are friendly. Once I had my coffee in hand and situated at a time, no one comes and bother me. Though street parking is hard to find, there is a lot that becomes free after a certain time(6?) at 3rd and Los Angeles St.

Hidden Downtown Coffeehouse – This old school coffee house in downtown's Old Bank District can be difficult to find. Its entrance is only accessible through a back alley and once inside you feel as if you've stepped back in time. The floor and front counter seems to be original to the building and the dim interior hosts cushy couches, low slung coffee tables scattered with art and music publications, and well worn tables just big enough for two. The colorful and slightly cartoonish paintings and sculpture that line the walls of the cafe not only serve as creative decor but are also for sale, some small mixed media pieces can be had for $25.

The cafe offers a large drinks menu with sweet blended concoctions like the Chocolate Monkey (it's like a mocha shake with banana), The Raspberry Kiss, and The Cookie Monster. Some stars of the ?soul steamers? menu include the Mint n Chip latte that has chocolate sauce, mint syrup, espresso, and steamed milk and the Green Tea Latte. They also offer a variety of pastries and breakfast and lunch sandwiches. My favorite are their egg frittata sandwiches, essentially a panini with egg, mushroom, and cheese between grilled herb focaccia bread.
