Not the greatest – Although the owner is quite friendly and the house looks lovely inside and out, this has not been a good experience. First of all none of the rooms can be locked and the room on the top floor is even without a door alltogether.Only a curtain (???) separates you from the rest of the house. Which is really uncomfortable. Furthermore breakfast only consists of some not so fresh fruit, and the bathroom could do with some cleaning up. But what bothered us the most was the pungeant dog smell that hung all through the house. The stench was so heavy that it hurt the brain. Not nice.
Nice guy, but a horrible place to stay – My friend and I picked this B&B because of the location and the rate. It is located just blocks away from the heart of the Castro and has a competitive rate. However, we couldn't have been more disappointed. Here is why:
1. Mr Whelan doesn't take credit cards. This is a hassle. Many people today, and especially myself, prefer not to carry cash of any kind while on vacation. My friend and I had to spend part of our evening trying to find an ATM machine just so we could pay him.
2. For breakfast, the only thing we were served was a small helping of fruit. And, after I mentioned that I wasn't a big fan of fruit, I was still served it. There were no bagels, no scones, nothing. I have had better breakfast experiences at Motel6. And, my friend and I were forced to immediately find breakfast as soon as we left the house.
3. Mr Whelan owns a small dog by the name of Floyd who is not friendly. In fact, on our second night stay, he bit my friend very badly. There were no first aid supplies to be found, so I had to purchase some. The bite needed stitches and required some careful attention for a couple weeks. Despite all of this, Mr Whelan didn't return our money or comp us a room. Instead, we got more fruit.
4. There is no parking available. Mr Whelan doesn't provide much direction or even a resident pass. When I parked where he instructed me to park and told me I would be fine leaving the car there for the weekend, I received a parking ticket.
In all, you would enjoy your stay in San Francisco and your visit to the Castro more if you leave this eccentric old man and his dog to their fruit trees.
