I really want to love this place but I just can't get there. The atmosphere is good and the food is ok but not great. I've mostly felt good about the food when I'm eating it but never get that feeling that I'll order it again. I've been there three times and tried a bunch of different stuff. Nothing really blows me away. It's not cheap either. I'd also feel better if there was a bit less of Guy Fieri around. His face is on the BBQ Sauce bottles, his show is running on the flat screens, His name is all over the place. Just a bit much for me.
Great Date Night at Tex Wasabi's – My wife and I went to Tex Wasabi's in Sacramento on Friday night for a "date night" and had the best time. We sampled the sushi and the BBQ and both were great. I recommend the "Dirty Magazine" roll. The ambiance screamed "FUN"! The service was perfect. Dani was our waitress. She was fun and engaging. As first timers, she guided us through the menu and gave her suggestions. We also met Mike the GM as he stopped by our table to see how we were doing. There were a couple of birthdays and lots of singing and laughing around us. We can't wait to go back!
Great food, beautiful decor, and great service! – Although it was late afternoon--before dinner rush, our server was very attentive and recommended some sushi rolls that weren't on the menu that he loved. We tried 1 of them, in addition to our own favs & it was delicious! OUr waiter refilled our drinks without waiting until they were empty or for us to ask. He was funny & personable. We had a great time & will be going back.
Great Food -- Not So Good Service – We were greeted enthusiastically by the manager who promptly seated us. We sat for quite some time before being approached by the waitstaff (#47). We ordered drinks and Killer Egg Rolls. One in our group ordered a Stella, which the menu said was on draft but received in a bottle w/o a glass. When questioned about the beer, #47 said it only came in a bottle. Usually cost in bottle is higher than draft. The Egg Rolls were great--lived up to their name. Two of us thought we were ordering the pork slider sandwiches with one side for $9.25. I personally pointed to the sandwich when ordering. What we got was the appetizer, $7.95, and our sides were extra to the tune of $3 and $6. Now $6 for a bowl of cold slaw is ridiculous. Since she thought we were ordering the appetizer, she should have mentioned to us the cheaper sandwich route, which would have cleared up the ordering problem before it went to the kitchen. When the bill came, we realized what she had done and weren't happy. By that time we had ordered a dessert, which we waited for, at least, 20 minutes for it to arrive, being told that the kitchen was backed up. We told her to cancel the dessert, but then wham it came to our table. We were delighted to know that there would be no charge for the dessert since we feel we did a lot of sitting waiting for this meal plus the mix-up in our sandwich order. The food was great. No complaints there. The BBQ smoker in the parking lot greets you immediately with that yummy smell that entices you in.
MUST try the Jackass rolls – I had a good experience here. Maybe it's because I went at happy hour so the food was cheaper. My friend told me to order the Jackass roll. I didn't think I would like it because I don't like sushi. She ordered it and tried it. I HAD to order after that.. yum!! It's made out of Tapioca rice paper roll with sushi rice, avocado, BBQ pork, french fries & a garlic chili mayo sauce.I didn't think it sounded good, but I was wrong. I can't wait to go back and try it!
I would say try that first and go during happy hour so it's half price. This the the dish that made Guy famous on the Food Network.
I also ordered the prok sliders. I thought the food was good. The only thing was it seemed like our waiter was really slow. There weren't very many people in there, so I'm not sure what was going on. I think the staff needs to make sure they greet people more when you come in. I didn't feel all that welcomed like a lot of other places.
I will still go back. If you are looking for sushi, I would try another place though.
Excellent food and fun atmosphere – I guess we must have been in a different restaurant than the previous 2 visitors. We were greeted immediately, got a table and had excellent service - not one glitch. We are not sushi fans so we concentrated on the other half of the menu. The fish taco appetizer was excellent and the beer cold. The BBQ ribs and chicken were moist and tasty and the portions large. Our garlic fries were shoestring cut, tasty and enjoyable. The panko cod fish and fries were also tasty, although the cole slaw was not especially good.
Overall a good meal with moderate pricing as restaurants go these days, not cheap and not outrageous.
Horrible place to go – The food is over priced, they have no idea how to make garlic fries, the servers are rude, and most of them look like they havent showered in days. The sushi guy Rene is disgusting, and rude, and should be fired . I will never go there again so long as Rene works there. My car was also broken into in the parking lot. And was caught on tape and I never even recieved an apology. I cannot stand this place. They need to stop giving Sacramento a bed name. I wouldnt wish this place on my worst enemy!
Worst Sushi and BBQ – We were driving towards arden fair mall to go eat at another sushi spot but saw Tex Wasabi and decides to give it a try. We found out it was a Japanese mix BBQ restaurant. It looks like a Fusion Texas Road house and Mikuni inside. They had a huge bar. We stood there for a while before someone finally greeted us and turns out this waiter was outside smoking all though he saw us walked in but still insisted on finishing his cigarrette first while we waited for him to come in and seat us. Anyways, the sushi chefs were not even japanese. We order a drink and of course since we were out for sushi we ordered real raw sushi and 2 rolls. I am a Huge Sushi fanatic and my guy loves BBQ, it wouldve been the perfect dining spot for us but too bad the sushi was not fresh, every piece of raw fish came thinly slice. Cheaply made. The BBQ dish that my guy ordered was dry, flavorless. It was nothing like Texas BBQ. We were extremely disappointed. It was a waste of our money. And the drink that we ordered? well the waiter completely forgot about it and it was sitting at the bar melted. By the time he brought the drink over, we were ready to pay and leave. He did apologized but still charged us for a drink that we barely touched nor enjoyed. It was one of the worst experience ever! Stick to a real sushi restaurant or an authentic BBQ spot. Sushi and BBQ is not a great mix. I am not sure why the other reviewer gave such great fake reviews, must be a friend of the restaurant owner or something. Seriously, I eat out a lot from the Bay Area, to Vegas, to LA and now checking out Sacramento restaurants weekly. Coming from the Bay Area/LA/Vegas means you know great food. Tex Wasabi does not serve great food or provide great service. Spend your money elsewhere.
Fun, lively and excellent service and food. – After having seen the owner of tex Wasabi on television it was a natural thing to go visit his restaurant.
My sister and I had just been sitted and I spotted the owner across the room. Called out "HEY GUY" and he came over to our table and chatted. Had the waiter bring us some "Killer Egg Rolls" and they are that. Several times he came to our table to check how we were doing. Guy Fieri is in person just as he is on television..........fun, exciting and into the food.........The sushi was so fresh and the nigiri fabulous. I have not been a fan of raw fish but after eating it at the Tex Wasabi restaurant I am. Also we were there on a Monday and returned on Friday for the same lunch adding the "Garden of Good and Evil Lettuce Wraps"...........which were EVIL (that's hot). The staff all take care of every diner whether or not they are your servers. Everyone has a smile and its a fun atmosphere. It's a 10 on my list for lunch! definitely OFF THE HOOK!!!!!
