Cheese shop, wine shop, sandwich shop, and coffee shop, Foster & Dobbs combines all of the above disproving the old adage "Jack of all trades, Ace of none" with an impressive cheese and wine selection, mouthwatering sandwiches and amazing coffee.

Sublime sandwiches and a beautiful cheese case make this lovely Irvington specialty shop a must-stop for everyday luxuries AND ideal for sourcing unique gifts for the (lovably) fussy foodie in your life. They often host interesting wine tastings—sign up for the newsletter to get info.

Bummer, dude – 5:50 PM - 09/05/10

Walked through the door, shaved-head hipster behind counter said "we close in 10 minutes, so you'll need to be quick."

Problem solved, douchebag. I guess we'll go to Whole Foods three blocks away.

A Northeast Gem – I love Foster & Dobbs. It is my favorite spot for lunch. The menu is limited, but everything is so fresh and delicious. Mostly, I appreciate the great service. The owner is so apparently passionate about the food selections they offer and she goes out of her way to make every experience a comfortable one. I've been meaning to go in the evening for wine/cheese, but haven't been able to make that happen yet. Others try to offer the "artisanal" food experience in Portland, but I don't think anyone succeeds in such an authentic way as Foster & Dobbs.

Others have commented on high prices, but I've found several items here that are priced significantly lower than at specialty food shops in other cities (I don't have a Portland comparison, b/c in many cases, F&D is the only place that carries these items in Portland).

Check out the flavored salts and huge selection of fine chocolate bars.

Northeast neighborhood's modern mercantile fuels foodie passions for artisanal products. – In Short
A wood-and-honey hued interior creates an earthy backdrop for this corner artisan food shop. Inside, every nook of the space presents food-lover focused offerings from shelves flaunting handmade pasta and pasta fixings to a table devoted solely to displaying finishing salts. Front and center, a large cheese counter fills the center of the l-shaped space; the expansive cheese case overflows ith blue-veined varieties, clothbound cheddars, and sharp sheep's milk cheeses, each identified and lovingly described on tiny little tags.

Best variety of cheese, best cheese quality anywhere, great service!! – A little gem in a cozy neighborhood! Located in the old "Thriftway" building in the NE Irvington neighborhood, this quaint little wine/cheese/sandwich/import shop boasts many hard to find authentic items such as octopus in oil and Australian Licorice. A knowledgeable staff and so much perfectly ripe cheese you hardly know where to start. And isn't this one of the (if not THE) only place in Portland to buy Salumi meats? Delicious! A great mix of import items as well as small local businesses alike, Foster and Dobbs is a fantastic place to spend an hour having a delectable (and creative) sandwich and wine by the glass (in juice cups, nonetheless) and leave with an assortment of goodies for home. Highly recommended for those of us that have spent any time in Europe thinking we'd never find any of this stuff again!

No abuse for these prices! – Is it a grocery store, a cheese shop or what. I was competely ignored by staff and the cheese didn't look so hot. Very pricey compared to Whole Foods et al. Just got a cold feeling here.

Excellent selection of nortwest US cheeses – The Colston Bassett Stilton is fantasic, and even difficult to get in England. The meats produced in Seattle by Mario Batali's father are very good, but I prefer the imported stuff. $44 a pound for domestic Cutletto is a bit much.

Cute but overpriced – Cute little neighborhood store, but most prices are a few dollars per pound more than Portland's real cheese mongers. Don't know the exact focus, some items are just off the wall .
