Good coffee if you can ever get any! – I would love to be able support our local businesses, but it's places like this that send you running back to Starbucks! It's not like I'm ordering something complicated, just a drip. They give you a cup and you have to pour the coffee yourself, but for some reason this takes like 20 minutes! If you have no where to go and feel like standing in front of the counter while the emplyees move at the pace of slugs, then this might be the place for you. Speed it up and I'll drink your coffee for sure.
Great Coffee! – Really great! Chocolaty, with a great body, light citric fruits note and a very fresh finish. That's how I would describe Ristretto's espresso. I can?t help to sound a little too technical but I finally found an espresso in Portland that is balanced and well-roasted, in instead of showing an ultra-aggressive acidity or that smoky, bitter taste.
As a coffee person, I highly recommend it!
Ristretto: It's Like Drinking Velvet. – Now, I have to admit, I know the owners of Ristretto from Los Angeles, and I bought their coffee mail order when they first opened their business just to be supportive. But, I have to tell you, if I hated them with every fiber of my being, I'd still mail order their coffee, because, as I put it when I first drank it: "It's like drinking velvet!"
We have no shortage of coffee places in Los Angeles. In fact, I rather like a lady who owns a coffee roasting place near my house. But Din Johnson is, well, psycho about coffee. In fact, (sorry, Din), I know that he hates that I order my coffee from them ground (fine, for espresso) and that I always get the Sumatra Mandheling. (They sometimes slip in a taste of some other kind to see if they can get me to be more creative in what I drink.)
This person who writes below that they have tasteless beans clearly has some grudge against Ristretto. And I say that as somebody who has converted numerous people on my blog to crazed Ristretto fans. All these people mail-ordering it from Los Angeles...where, again, we have loads of coffee places...they heard it from me how amazing Ristretto is, ordered it for themselves, and keep ordering.
Ristretto is coffee p0rn, and I'm an adddict, and again, if I hated Din and his wife, I'd still order their coffee. P.S. You've got to try the chocolate chip cookies, too.
amazing experience, excellent coffee & warm environment.. – unlike other coffee shops in this town, the few times i have been in ristretto roasters, i actually felt that i was
being acknowledged as a person and not judged for the clothes i was wearing, etc.!
more important, however, this coffee is AMAZING. the ethiopia yirgacheffe is some of the best ethiopian i have had in years, the beaumont espresso dominates stumptown's hairbender and the sumatra is unassuming and intricately balanced.
Wow...Really Flavorless Beans – I had high expectations for the quality of freshly roasted espresso beans, but was very disappointed upon bringing this coffee home and pulling my espresso shots. I know what I'm doing and have worked as a barista. I usually use Peets or Tully's at home, and sometimes Stumptown or Illy, and enjoy all of these espressos. This coffee has no flavor, it's really weird. It's not bitter or offensive to the palette, but my latte tastes like warm milk. I also would like to note that I don't use a lot of milk in my lattes and that with any of the other roasts I've used they are delicious. Ristretto espresso is so bad, that even Starbuck's "burnt beans" are way more pleasing. Also, the service there is rude and slow. No one acknowledged my presense for at least two minutes. Not even a "hello, I'll be right with you."
