Love this place! – My boyfriend and I have been going here for about 4 years now and we have NEVER had bad food. The sushi is very fresh, very well priced and the apps are amazing! The spring rolls are the best I have ever had, and they are addicting. Alex (owner/sushi chef) knows us by name and is always super friendly and quick with service. Whenver I have friends or family from out of town, this is the place I take them. The only downside is that some of the waiter/waitresses are extremely slow and have attitude problems, although the last couple of times we went, the service was fanatastic because it wasn't the problematic usual waiters. This is why we directly tip the sushi chefs and not the waiters when we go. Other than that, there is literally nothing bad to say about this place. If you want quality sushi, a great atmosphere all at a great price this is the place!
San Sai Right for the Times. – Great food, good prices, this place stands out in a neighborhood packed with restaurants. This place is family friendly, with enough variety to make everyone happy.
Great salmon, low prices – I stopped here for lunch with my boyfriend in late December. I was very impressed with the salmon bowl. Not only was it much larger than I expected for the low price ($7 for salmon!), it was perfectly flavored and very tender. My boyfriend's spicy chicken plate wasn't very spicy, but it was good. I could not get enough of the delicious potstickers. The only downside worth mentioning is that the tea was $1.50 instead of free with the meal like many other Japanese restaurants, and not flavorful enough to warrant the cost. I agree with another reviewer that this is not a romantic place, and parking is likely to be a pain. The large windows are great for people-watching and enjoying the beautiful weather. SanSai Japanese Grill is one of the best restaurants on this little strip and I definitely plan to return.
Great deals for fresh sushi – Food: This place doesn't have the fanciest sushi variety, but the quality is good especially for the price (happy hour is awesome!). My husband and I have been going here at least once a week since May and have always gone home with full stomachs and have never felt ill. The hot tea is also delicious. The volcano roll is yummy.
Ambience: I wouldn't take anyone on a romantic dinner here, the ambience is a bit lacking. It's not quite as cafeteria-style like Todai but definitely not romantic. This would be a great place to take a group of friends to.
Location: Easily accessible. Parking would be difficult in the weekend especially with the annoying shopping-traffic from the yuppies.
Service: Yes, you pretty much sit yourselves but service has been consistently good. They get busy sometimes and expect longer waits then but all the waiters/waitresses have been friendly and helpful.
Favorite Sushi in Portland--Love It – I love this place--the sushi is super-fresh and is always half price. I go here at least once a month and would eat here without the incredible discount. The owner is very friendly as well. The atmosphere is casual and the only drawback is that the decor feels a little generic. But the quality of the sushi more than makes up for it!
Bad Service... – Ok first off the correct name is SanSai..
I had been to this place before a few years ago, it was fair considering it had recently opened.. I went again with a coupon from the Entertainment Book, which they did not honor as per what the coupon stated. Lets see where do I start. We walked in, the "waitress" told us to sit anywhere, but all the open tables were dirty. She seemed very put off that we asked her to wash the table.
A competent waitress took our order. I had sushi from the happy hour menu. It was good. My boyfriend ordered the the teriyaki chicken, he didn't finish it. He said it tasted old, as if it had been prepared in advance and was just sitting out waiting to be ordered. In the end he didn't feel well either. Once we were ready to go, I tried to flag down the "waitress" (same one that seated us), excuse me, excuse me. No response so I went up to the counter and requested to go boxes and the bill. She looked at me blanky as if she had no idea I was talking to her..and English is her first language. We paid our inaccurate bill, I didn't bother having them correct it, because by that time I couldn't get out of there fast enough.. I will never go there again..
