Voted one of the filthiest restaurants in the world – I wouldn't bother eating at the Kauai Island Grill even if you paid me. My safety and health are worth much more than any price! Having inspected restaurants all over the world for Virtual Tourist for over a 15 year period I've seen my share of what a budget restaurants should look like. I wouldn't expect anything other than a clean restaurant. But, if I had to worry about c@ckroaches, r@ts, hygiene, safety and electrical codes not up to standard I would gladly eat elsewhere else, even if the price was higher, and I would even consider eating outside with the homeless.

This VirtualTourist review says the Kauai Island Grill isn't 'free from infestation'.

AOL just yesterday did a front page expose on this property calling it the worst restaurant in America.

Wikipedia says it has been voted the filth!est restaurant in America for FOUR consecutive years. You can read all about the hotel history here.

For your own health sake, please stay away.

The KAUAI ISAND GRILL FILES BANKRUPTCY, DODGES TAXMAN'S LOCK – There's something fishy going on at the Kauai Island Grill. I saw this coming at my favorite restaurant when the staff and the food started to go on the downswing. But they had it coming. Here in the newspaper it reads.

"The famous landmark restaurant escaped a tax fillet yesterday - by declaring bankruptcy.

State tax agents padlocked the landmark restaurant because it was in arrears on $750,000 in taxes. But late yesterday, the owner won an apparent stay of the tax collector by telling the state it is filing for bankruptcy.

The owner, said it may reopen for business under the name of Tooty Fruity and cater to the gay community in the neighborhood.

"We haven't seen the papers," said a spokesman for the state Taxation and Finance Department. "But we were notified that they were petitioning for bankruptcy. In that case, the state becomes a creditor."

The Island Grill was no fluke. Once billed as Beavertons only Hawaiian restaurant and famous for the famous katsu plates brought to its tables.

Simple teriyaki dishes, wonderfully quirky. – This is the restaurant that was in the national news last year because of a controversial ad that the Sunset High paper ran and later refused to run. It used to be "Jail #3" and was extremely quirky in decor, but now it is only moderately quirky. The food is simple fare and the menu limited to about ten kinds of teriyaki like dishes, which are easy to get "to go". The owner is charming and attentive.

The food is a relatively healthy alternative to fast food, and tasty, in a teriyaki way. Affordable, too!
