Oh my God, I can't get enough of this place!! By far one of my most favorite places to eat EVER! I love the relaxed atmosphere, modest setting, unassuming location, and of course the mouth watering cuisine. It is a real gem! The people who own it are so sweet and take real pride in what they do. I have tried at least 5 other Ethiopian food restaurant and there is no comparison. Dalo's is THE BEST. After writing this review I am hankering for some Dalo's.... here i go!
LOOOOOOVE Dalo's – There just aren't adequate words to describe the Dalo's experience but I'll try. Wonderful, cheap food, Warm, friendly owners, lovely Ethiopian decor, all around nice atmosphere. My kids and I have gotten a lot of friends hooked on Dalo's. We get the vegan platter, with the spinach, lentils, miser watt?, salad-y stuff & injera. At first I couldn't understand how they could stay in business with such low prices, but luckily for everyone Dalo's is super popular now & deservedly so.
Good food, quite cheap – We just picked the buffet (which was what most folks were chosing). It was only $10 and you get 4-5 vegetarian dishes, 2 chicken dishes and 2 beef dishes along with injeras.
Everything was in 2 flavors: spicy & non-spicy.
The lentils, spinach and cabbage dishes were good, the chicken dish (one serving of the buffet) was good and the other serving was okay.
The restaurant is in remote place (it's actually on Williams St, not on Vancouver Ave (as put in the address). Still hard to find.
The service can be slow if the places gets crowded (at one moment, the entire buffet had half the buffet not filled).
The waiters seem down-to-earth.
Since it's in a remote place, you can find a lot of street parking.
Yummy! – The food is delicious and the staff are super friendly. Several vegan choices and the small vegan combo is only $7- plenty of food for one person so it's a great value. Ambiance isn't great and the wait can be a tad long but I love the food and staff so I forget about all of that once I get my food. The other night I went in and they had an all you can eat buffet which was awesome- instant gratification with 5 vegan choices! I hope they make it a regular thing.
Update 1/6/10- the all you can eat buffet is now a regular thing at Dalo's. It's just $10 and a great way to introduce someone to Ethiopian food or to get instant dinner.
Food was good, but too slowwww! – Went on Saturday evening at 7pm. The place was about half full. We all ordered tibbs dishes and ordered an appetizer. Received drinks fairly promptly but after 45 minutes no appetizer, and all the people that were there when we arrived still had no food on their tables so we started getting worried. After about an hour one table near us got some food. Finally we got our food I think around the 80 minute mark. The food was good but not great. Definitely not worth the wait. Not coming back.
Absolutely AWESOME – Everything positive said and written about Dalo's is absolutely true. The food is fresh, delicious, adequately spicy and above all CHEAP. You will never find better Ethiopian food in Portland- I've tried. The enjara is so fresh and tasty unlike the other places where it's cursty, cold & very bitter. Do yourself a favor and just go - try to get there before 8pm on friday and saturday - the rest of the week is fine after 8pm (except sunday - they're closed). Go and you wont be sorry.
DELICIOUS! – The food is absolutely delicious - the least greasy Ethiopian food I have ever had! Loved the level of spice - great flavors and fresh.
My husband picked up take out and said the dining room was a bit rugged. So we would probably only do take out. I can't think of a true con. Give it a try!!!
Inexpensive, delicious, lovely people – Yum, just delicious ethiopian food, good portions, low, low price and an enjoyable atmosphere. The guys that play jazz there on Friday and Saturday are a lot of fun. If you have yet to try it, you should soon!
Delicious and Cheap – The most delicious Ethiopian food I have had in Portland. The prices are amazing and I am always stuffed when I leave. They are also incredibly nice.
Cheapest dinner in a LONG time... – Hard to find. It does not look like a restaurant on the outside. We found the entrance on Williams, not Vancouver, with a pink awning. Not a place to take someone you want to impress. We dined there last night and it was really weird. Half of the restaurant was well lit with good music (of course that half was full!) and half was so dark you could barely read the menu and the hum of the refrigerator unit behind the tiny bar was way louder than the music in the other room. It was pretty busy. Probably because its so cheap! Service was SLOW. If you are okay with standing up or being very direct to get attention, you'll be okay, but subtle hints like eye contact or a nod does NOT get their attention. The food was pretty good. We shared a small vegetable platter and small chicken tibbs. Some of our veggies weren't hot all the way through and it could have been spicier (we weren't given an option) but it was a good deal of food and we took home leftovers. I had the honey wine (so-so) and he had a Rogue. We got out of there for under $20. I prefer the vegan platter at Queen of Sheba but with the prices Dalo's, I'd say its worth a shot if you aren't real picky.
