All food at the Side Door is made in-house, from scratch--and it shows. Come nighttime it's a friendly place for a talk vodka soda with extra lime.

I've met more people in this friendly, cozy cafe than anywhere. Love the staff, sandwiches are badass and at lunch, it's packed.

Tiny joint, so be prepared to wait while they lovingly craft the fresh food you're dying to cram down your gullet. Patience.

Cozy Bar, Great Food, Friendly Staff – This place is a gem. The staff always makes me feel welcome. And the food is great. The sandwiches are made with a variety of good breads piled high with quality ingredients. There is no wonderbread here! You'll find large portions for reasonable prices. (You might even consider sharing a sandwich.)

Also, they have daily specials that keep me coming back. There are always 2 different special soups. And I've rarely been disappointed by them. And there are one or two special sandwiches or entrees.

From the regular menu I would recommend trying these items:

The hummus plate - Cheap, filling, freshly made, and darn tasty.

The Stark Dip - I don't think I have ever had a better roast beef with au jus.

The Melted Morrison - This is the emperor of grilled cheese sandwiches.

The Ceasar Salad - Try it with the smoked salmon. They must have a local supplier for that salmon. It's fantastic.

I could go on. But, I think you just need to go try it for yourself.

One final note:

DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT WEST OF THE RESTAURANT

I don't think that it is fair of other reviewers to bash this restaurant for being towed. They do all they can to let people know not to park in the lot behind them. There are signs at their door and on every table. The parking situation is unfortunate. However, please don't let that dissuade you from coming to this warm, friendly restaurant.

A big lot but only for employees! – Great, first timer at your mediocre little establishment....had a $10 (w/tip) hot chocolate then found out after being there 15 minutes my car was towed. Apparently thinking it was OK to park next to your bar ( in the large, almost vacant lot westside). I parked along side my friend, who was also a first timer. We were both towed, charged $174.50/each for our ignorance. The small sign installed next to your building indicated that the lot was for permit holders only......thinking it was OK for patrons to park. Lessons learned!

Since the publis pays your mortgage, assume the public are all idiots, you may want to add a sign warning them of their potential for being towed when they come in the bar. You think since you have parking allowed for your help you would offer the same to your customers!

So much potential. – I have been an early morning regular of sorts for a couple months but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. There's one guy in the morning who is usually very attentive but in general, the service is terrible. Sometimes I have been confused as to whether they offer table service or if you're supposed to go to the counter and order. They also take forever to cash you out, leaving you sit there to do nothing for 10 or 15 minutes after you've finished. I went in one Sat morning at 7:30, opening time, and there was no cook. How can you get weekend only breakfast foods when there is no cook? The server was very accommodating and gave me some free coffee and she also made a great sandwich. Given the situation in the morning when there are so few customers, it gives the appearance that they are struggling. Maybe they don't understand what good business is, and what constitutes good service. I don't know. I think I'm going to give it a rest, maybe 6 mo. or so, and see if there are any changes or if they are still there. I have doubts

this is a cozy little bar – they may have a limited menu, but the food is always fresh and they readily accomodate special requests. plus they have two soups daily and feature different lunch and dinner specials. the menu is not vegetarian but very vege-friendly. the beer selection changes occaisionally and is always pretty good. service can at times be a little slow but is good overall. i like that they display works from local artists and rotoate the selection regularly. and the jukebox is full of great songs from leadbelly to talking heads.
