Very pleased with Janine, Bishop's in general – Every time I go to Bishop's on Alberta I go home with a really nice haircut. My hair is fine and damaged (from color) and I really appreciate that they don't give you some look that works best on a different hair type, or something that looks really cool but you can't replicate it at home.
Janine (sorry, not sure of the spelling) is particularly talented. Every time she cuts and blow dries my hair my friends all say "Wow, what did you do to your hair?"
Pros: Nice atmosphere, and you get the cut you want.Customer service people are super friendly and will advise you if there's a wait time.
Cons: None, really. Sometimes there is a long wait, but probably because a lot of people like the salon.
Creepy bi-level, double waterfall, mullett. Ouch! – Day 1. Went in to get a nice, straight up trim on my near waist length hair. It had not been trimmed for over a year and I suggested that it needed 3-4 inches cut off and a tiny bit of layering but nothing too crazy. It took a total of 5 minutes and when we were done I looked down on the ground and could hardly see any evidence that any hair had been cut at all. Got home, nice cut but must have only taken off at most a half inch.
Day 2. Return asking that my first wishes of 3-4 inches be granted. Holy sh*t were they ever. I felt like my head was a hedge on the set of Edward Scissorhands. Seriously I have like 4 haircuts in one. A bob in front, about 8 inches of hair in back accompanied by about 2 feet of hair underneath it with NO layering transition. It is creepy. Multinomah falls mullet for real. I won't go back. Probably be better off going back to one of those 10 bucks a whack places, where the barbers actually make eye contact, don't say f*ck every other word and had to pass more than a clipper buzz cut test to get the job.
Another Great Cut – I'm writing this with mixed feelings. I want to praise the place and especially Nicole, who cuts my hair, but I don't want this Bishop's to get so busy I can't get in any more! The shop is clean, bright and comfortable. The prices can't be beat, the beer is free, the music is good, and Nicole is an artist! She's been cutting my hair for years now and I've never had a less than great cut. She's amazing. From what I've seen of the other stylists, you probably can't go wrong whomever you get, though. My husband and I recommend the place to everyone we know. Just don't over-book Nicole!
Enjoyed my experience – I met my new lifelong hair stylist at the Bishops on Alberta!!!
She really knows how to treat a man's head and carry an amazing conversation. AND....its so cheap...AND...there is free beer.
Crazy love for this place and that hair dresser chick!!!!
Really great stylist named Nicole – I walked into Bishops without knowing what to expect. I had heard some great and not so great things about this place. Lemme tell ya, I walked out loving it!! Nicole was the name of the stylist and she did an incredible job. My hair is not easy to cut and she did exactly how I wanted. The place was easy going and not at all a pretentious hipster sanctuary as i had heard. I will be going back happily ever after.
BAD HAIRCUT – free beer is nice, but bad listening skills, and ignoring my pleas to not use thinning shears on my already fine, fly-away hair, then blindly hacking away saying it will give my hair "more lift", TOTALLY NEGATES the free beer. not to mention, after asking for a modern angled bob, you made me look like florence henderson from the partrigde family. Thanks but no thanks.
Great haircut, questionable reception – I just received an awesome haircut at the alberta location and i always receive a great haircut, however it was pretty busy in there, so i was prepared for the wait. The receptionist guy was friendly and made sure i had a beer and told me a wait time. Having been there before I knew the drill, I only waited 45 minutes, and the receptionist told me the wait time about 5 times without me even asking. I know bishops is attentive, but this was too much. It made me feel like i was part of a haircutting assembly line, he was really anxious acting and it made me nervous to constantly be standing over me, making sure i was okay. I've never experienced this behavior before, I hope it was his first day and not a permanent action at the shop, because i usually have a more relaxing wait.
Great cut, free beer! – I am newish to town and still unemployed. I decided to try Bishops because it was hip, yet AFFORDABLE. I walked in mid-afternoon, mid-week, and was surprised to find a 45mim-1hr. wait. Lucky, for them, I have no life and was OK with waiting. The frosty High-Life offered to me made the wait much more bare-able, and delicious on such a hot day. I waited a surprisingly quick 40 minutes. and was greeted by a friendly, but not too eager nor excited stylist. I work in the industry and understand that some days, your just not on your A game. Although I didn't receive the "entertainment" and conversation I was hoping to find, it turns out my stylist did a great job! I am so picky, and the next day I usually discover what I don't like about my cut, and take scissors to it myself! It has been 3 days now, and still FABULOUS! Wish I could remember my stylist's name. I believe his name started with an A...Alex, Aaron??? He really made an effort to understand my description of what I wanted, and I think that is the first sign of a good stylist. I will be back.
Waiting for a bad hair day... – I got my haircut at Bishops a little over 3 weeks ago after it was recommended to me by a friend when I was complaining to her about yet another bad hair cut. I did make the mistake of coming in on a Saturday afternoon and even though I had a beer and plenty of people watching to do after 40 minutes I was getting a little irritated. Finally I was called back, my stylist was friendly and actually seemed interested in what I wanted to do with my hair, although it seemed that all the stylist were just as friendly and attentive. The final result was just what I wanted and so far it has grown out nicely. The price was right and I left slightly buzzed and very happy. I wish I could remember the stylist name, she has dark hair and lots off tattoos, even though that describes most of them! I will be back to try them all (just not on a Saturday)!
nothing but the finest – I disagree that this place is foul, out-dated or unimpressive. People - this is not NYC, you pay $20 for a haircut, and its usually a great one. If you are too pretenious to see the diamond in the rough, then you probably don't belong in Portland. Bishops offers a great service to the community that is fast, affordable and locally owned.
